Will a British divorcee cost 'Wolfie' his job?
From SHARON CHURCHER and ANNETTE WITHERIDGE, Mail on Sunday 12:08pm 20th March 2005

The appointment of George Bush's leading hawk as head of the World Bank was heading for a crisis over his relationship with a senior British employee.

Influential members of staff at the international organisation have complained to its board that Paul Wolfowitz, a married father of three, is so besotted with Oxford-educated Shaha Riza he cannot be impartial.

Extraordinarily, they claim she played a key role in pushing the 61-year-old Pentagon official into the Iraq War. And the row comes amid claims that Wolfowitz's wife Clare once warned George Bush of the threat to national security any infidelity by her husband could cause.

* * * *

"His womanising has come home to roost," a Washington insider said. "Paul was a foreign policy hawk long before he met Shaha but it doesn't look good to be accused of being under the thumb of your mistress."

Now national security, that's another thing. Neocons do not really care about the national security of the US. Just the security of Israel.

pretty funny that someone is blaming the war on this woman instead of, oh, the orchestrated neocon agenda dating back a decade.

Might as well blame a talking snake.

But I didn't realize that he was actually still married.

Or that he was a known "womaniser!"

Yet another shining example of true neocon moral and family values--they are liars and hypocrites on every level.

25. I'd be very disappointed if this costs him the World Bank appointment
Wolfowitz should be rejected for one simple reason: he is among the chief architects of the illegal US invasion of Iraq. He, along with all others who planned the war and fabricated the lies that predicated it, should be tried for war crimes.

That is the reason he should be rejected and that should be made clear.

I seriously doubt that Mr. Wolfowitz' illicit relationship with Ms. Riza (below) or any other woman had any affect on his views.

Whatever it takes, IMO. Nobody deserves to get the shit kicked out of him more than this guy.

40. Denying him a position for his womanizing says nothing about Iraq
Yes, Wolfowitz deserves to get the shit kicked out of him, but so do Rumsfled, Bush, Cheney, Rice, Feith, Perle, Powell and many more. They deserve it because they planned a colonial war and, since they couldn't come right out and say it was a colonial war, made up the reasons out of thin air.

Wolfowitz may be a philanderer, but so is Clinton. It wasn't an impeachable offense when he did and this is just a venial. At least Ms. Riza sounds like a more interesting person than Ms. Lewinsky, if that's either here or there.

War crimes are something else. An aide to G. W. Bush should no more be given the presidency of the World Bank or any other position of international responsibility than a lieutenant of Osama bin Laden.

41. Yes but we have no way of prosecuting them on these war crimes
As long as BushCO holds all the cards in all three branches there is nothing we can do. How many crimes & scandals can we uncover and nothing is done? No investigations, no repercussions. Until we win back Congress these gangsters are getting off scott free every time. If the Europeans can take down Wolfie with this scandal then I say "by any means necessary" - go for it. We have to fight these gangsters at their level.

52. We have no means of prosecuting him on War Crimes
That is no excuse for the rest of humanity to paper them over. It is up to the rest of humanity to make things very uncomfortable for these war criminals.

This is an opportunity for some part of the international community to rebuffed Bush and the neoconservatives for their dirty little war. Bush can ignore mass demonstrations and call the demonstrators a "focus group." How would he spin a rejection of Wolfowitz? How would he spin it if it were made clear that the governing body of the World Bank will not accept any nominee with Iraqi blood on his hands?

42. A thought on that
What I have read about Ms. Riza this morning suggests she is a very interesting person. What kind of woman raised in Saudi Arabia grows up and achieves what she has? She must be a very strong and independent-minded person.

Back when I was doing online dating, if I had seen her profile, I might have made an overture.

I find all this talk about her being a "babe" or a "cunt" sexist and offensive. There's a lot more to her than there is to some young chick who has a fling with a Congressman, gets caught and cashes in by doing a spread in Playboy.

47. I agree that her attractiveness is not the issue -
and that some of these comments are out of line.

The real issue is Wolfowitz. Is he divorced or not? Is he having an adulterous affair or just an affair? And if it is an adulterous affair, why does the Moral Authority George W. Bush make such an appointment? Is the woman an influence on Wolfowitz's policy decisions? It's akin to holding office and sleeping with a lobbyist. It's a matter of ethics, and, since George Bush enjoys harping on them so much, morals.

51. Oh, I certainly agree you can make some political hay out of this
Something I would like to do is peel off that part of Chrisitian right that is made up of poor rural whites -- who are getting screwed by Bush's economic policies and who work for outfits like WalMart. I'm not saying the angle shouldn't be played. Bush obviously cares more about his corporatist cronies than he does for poor rural whites or their cultural values.

But to use it as a reason to reject Wolfowitz' appointment to the World Bank? That trivializes the tens of thousands of deaths that have resulted from the US invasion of Iraq.

Is the world going to take a stand against colonialism and war crimes or is it going to take a stand against philandering men?

And as far as Ms. Riza is concerned she probably has a lot in common with Mr. Wolfowitz that I myself certainly couldn't be attracted too!! Two peas in a pot with the same agenda, I would suspect. Sex wears thin after a little time, 'eh Jack?
