Sweet vindication, proof that language matters.
A friend of mine has thought it a quirk of mine to refer to the war in Iraq as "The U.S. Invasion of Iraq." I refuse to call it anything else. She had gotten in the habit of referring to it as "The Iraqi Liberation" thanks to mass media.

I just got an email from her that said <and I have her permission to post a portion of it>.

"It's partially your fault you know. <a squabble with her dad> I used to believe we did the right thing when we went into Iraq. Last night I caught myself using the phrase US invasion of Iraq when talking to dad and it dawned on me that its because its the truth. What the hell have we gotten ourselves into?"

Okay, I'm ready for the next one. Bring 'em on. ;)

3. Just goes to show ya...
framing is everything. It's the new "It's the economy, stupid" and we had better get real good at it. Sounds like you have mastered the art!

5. I, too, have always referred to it as the illegal invasion/occupation
because that is what it is. The media uses 'war' because it serves their purposes, helps 'legitimize' the invasion and, I have no doubt, all the talking points sent by the repubs makes it very clear that invasion/occupation are not to be used.

6. Yep, I use "occupation" too.
Invasion instead of Liberation

Occupation instead Peacekeeping or Nation Building

7. "Occupation" is the word Smirk used to describe it . . .
I remember when Zell Miller at the RNC got so incensed at anyone who would use the filthy word "occupation" to describe what we're doing in Iraq, and the Daily Show played film of Bush using that very word to describe our actions.

I've been partial over the years to calling it the "Iraq Attack" but then, I'm partial to alliteration.

8. I've driven off any rightwing "friends"
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 12:52 PM by Bouncy Ball
because I always insisted on calling it "the immoral and unjustified invasion and attack of another country that did nothing to us" (yes, it's a mouthful), and sometimes throwing in "illegal," "preventative" (worse than pre-emptive, because it was), etc.

Or sometimes if I'm feeling lazy "that nasty immoral war we brought to an innocent people."

CONGRATULATIONS about your friend!!!

But you can see me doing that, right? LOL
