"magical thinking" and terri schiavo
i've been sitting back and watching this circus and it clearly highlights the difference between the rational and the delusional.

this really isn't even about "emotion." emotionally-based people can still make judgments based in fact.

no, the right-wing, fundamentalist circus down in florida is just one more example of the superstitious, magical, fantastical, and deluded mentality at work.

all the impassioned hysterics in the world will not reconnect her feeding tube. it will make nutjobs go out and commit acts of christian terrorism though.

people: there are no magic cures. people don't spontaneously "heal" from extensive brain damage. god isn't coming down in the eleventh hour to magically restore brain matter where cerebrospinal fluid now exists.

the woman is dead. D-E-A-D.

she has no cognition, no higher-level brain function. her body operates because her autonomic brain function remains intact.

really.

it's appalling how many people still live in the middle ages.

absurd. bottom line-it's really nobody's business.

2. You know what's been bothering me?
I haven't been comfortable with the news media attempts to characterize this as a struggle between "culture of life" and ??????. They seem unable to define the "other side" of this issue. It all seems inadequate.

I'm beginning to see this whole struggle in much, much larger terms....I'm beginning to see this as a struggle between the forces of the enlightenment and the forces of the dark ages.

Think about it for a second. The founding fathers were products of the Age of Enlightenment. They understood science and the pursuit of knowledge and they were struggling, even then with the dark forces of the the superstition and tyranny of the church.

And.....aren't we seeing that in Pinnelas County today?

Isn't the entire "faith-based" Bush* Administration a throw-back to the dark ages?

There's much to fear here........

thoughts?

3. that's what it precisely is!
i feared a regression to the 19th century under this regime (dismantling of the new deal/social safety net/worker protections/tax rebates and incentivization (read: corporate welfare) for megacorps, and futher monopolization.

however, this rampant devolution into first-century christianity (and trying to use this prop up a theocracy) is definitely most frightening thing i have ever seen.

a return to the dark ages? try a return to the weekend after christ's resurrection.

5. Reason vs Faith. Faith is winning and it will surely destroy civilization.

4. another example of religious mass hysteria
like the little girls who saw mary at fatima, the little girls from the salem witch trials, the face of christ on a grilled cheese sandwich, the children's crusade, the real crusades, the inquisition, etc.

works every time, signs and omens, angels and devils.

6. These people are being twisted and turned emotionally by the
...same kind of mass hysteria manipulation used by the political fanatics who were building Nazi Germany. The spokes people in Pinnellas Park Florida are taking their followers to a fever pitch of emotion, fear and hatred. The same rhetoric that the Nazi leaders used to blind the German people to reality and to control their thoughts and minds are being used outside of the hospice where Terri Schiavo is. That which allowed the Nazi leaders to launch their war machine onto a nearly defenseless Europe bringing about the deaths of over 50 million people in the western war theater, those same tactics are happening right now here in Florida. The mass media coverage is slanted in the same way that the propaganda machine in Nazi Germany covered up the holocaust which claimed over 6 million Jewish lives as well as the deaths of many persons the Nazis regarded as human inferiors including homosexuals, mentally handicapped, gypsies, mixed race individuals and numerous other subjective inferior distinctions that only Nazis and like minded racists could possibly understand.

Hopefully this hysteria will now spread uncontrollably around the nation. I doubt if the president would come forward to calm such a reaction. Governor Bush of FL is doing nothing to prevent such a reaction from taking place. With Terri Schiavo now down to her final hours only time can reveal what is to happen.
