Nader: Save Schiavo at any cost

WASHINGTON, March 24 /U.S. Newswire/ -- Consumer Advocate Ralph Nader and Wesley J. Smith, author of the award winning book "Culture of Death: The Assault on Medical Ethics in America" call upon the Florida Courts, Governor Jeb Bush and concerned citizens to take any legal action available to let Terri Schiavo live.

"A profound injustice is being inflicted on Terri Schiavo," Nader and Smith asserted today. "Worse, this slow death by dehydration is being imposed upon her under the color of law, in proceedings in which every benefit of the doubt-and there are many doubts in this case-has been given to her death, rather than her continued life."

Among the many injustices in this case, Nader and Smith point to the following:

The courts not only are refusing her tube feeding, but have ordered that no attempts be made to provide her water or food by mouth. Terri swallows her own saliva. Spoon feeding is not medical treatment. "This outrageous order proves that the courts are not merely permitting medical treatment to be withheld, it has ordered her to be made dead," Nader and Smith assert.

I don't agree with everything the guy says, but I don't dispute his sincerity. He is a straight shooter, and he says what he believes. He has a long history of fighting for progressives. And any of you who make this a political issue have more to do with Jeb Bush and Ralph Limbaugh than anyone who asks questions rather than choosing a side first. Consider that the man has been suspected of strangling his wife and refusing her immediate treatment so she wouldn't rat on him. Maybe we should starve HIM to death. For Chrissakes, you all talk about the law stepping into people's lives--well, they had a direct impact on her teeth being allowed to rot out after he refused to let the docs clean them and then proceeded to hoard and spend away her medical fund. Just another case of a thug of an ignorant man destroying every morsel of a woman--and we want to label this as progressive? Yes, it pisses me off that this is political at all, and we who call ourselves progressives on other issues shouldn't react by accepting the challenge of another round of us-and-them football. Sheesh, this isn't exactly a question where there is an obvious right and wrong, and dems ought to show themselves mature and rational enough to treat the subject seriously, instead of just leaping to whatever the anti-repuke position is.
