AP story's misleading headline: "Doctors disagree on Schiavo's awareness"

The article essentially names two doctors--William Cheshire and William Hammesfahr, the former dredged up by Jeb Bush, the latter employed by the Schindlers--who disagree with virtually every other neurologist in the nation about how aware Terri Schiavo is. The headline misleads one into thinking this is a real medical controversy, rather than the mere political one it is in reality.

Hammesfahr has been a figure of controversy. In 2001, the Florida Department of Health accused him of falsely advertising a neurological treatment and exploiting a patient for financial gain. The treatment is "contrary to current neurological knowledge," the department said. Hammesfahr denied the accusations, and in an interview Thursday he said the probation and fine against him were overturned on appeal.

On Thursday, Dr. Lawrence J. Schneiderman of the University of California, San Diego, a specialist in bioethics of medical futility and end-of-life care, said in an interview, "He's a quack, to put it the politest way I can."

Hammesfahr said he believes Schiavo can be helped by treatment and that numerous other neurologists, some of whom actually examined Schiavo, agreed.

"I'm not the only person who has said she can be rehabilitated," he said. "Are we all quacks?

Mrs. Bush was on the board of Mayo Clinic for years and years - she and Poppy had several free operations from them over the years - it's in her book - she hada part in this guy from Mayo.

and promoted it to high heaven and not a word after 9/11 - there is scads of info in her own book that is so damming - I actually reference other things back to it sometimes. It was a very bragging book and now so many things can be traced back to what she had told as gospel,but they would now deny.
