Every soldier injured in Iraq should be provided a college education
and every soldier KILLED should receive one for their kids. Most young people who join the military these days are lured in by the "promise" of college, so the military needs to DELIVER on that promise.

If a young guardsman gets injured and sent back home, he/she is doomed to a lifetime of begging for care for their injuries, and the loss of whatever life they had before they were sent over and injured.. If guard & reserve are being asked to sacrifice life and limb, they should automatically be afforded the opportunity to prepare for a life they did not originally choose..

Life after a horrific injury will almost always result in an impoverished life because "ordinary jobs" are hard to come by if you are disabled. The college education would at least give them an opportunity to prepare for a future that they CAN do.

Our country owes it to them..

6. i'm all for an education system like germany
or most of the other european countries. secondary school on achievement and credit, not paid for by rich parents. if you're good enough to go to college, you can. if not, you get a manufacturing job somewhere and still can make good money.

i doubt that'd work in america tho, some of the corporate-owned universities (or just the normal universities) enjoy their money for tuition.

8. College in Germany will not be free any longer

It is a sad situation, but that's the way it is. The conservative German states went to the German Supreme Court for their right to demand tuition - and won, a clearly partisan decision.

The German Universities are badly underfunded as they are, and most students are quite willing to pay money for better libraries and more profs; but unfortunately the tuition won't stay at the Universities but will be used for the general state treasuries instead.

And as the icing: while the Universities are affordable for everybody (even with tuition - the constitution guarantees access), the school system is ancient and makes it very hard for persons with a weak social background to get anywhere near an university. Sadly Germans are fond of the strange and unfair three branches system; any attempt to introduce a fairer system has failed so far.

9. really?
hmm. well, most of what i know is from my german graphcom teacher. it wouldn't surprise me if they're changing the system, it seems hard to maintain. i just hope they don't go all the way to the dark side like america's is.

:/

2. why just the injured?
WW2 veterans were all given generous college benefits. The US has benefited from that ever since.

3. Does the GI bill still exist?
The GI bill of WWI sent many to college who otherwise would not have. My uncles did not go to college, but the GI bill helped them start successful businesses. It should be offered to every service-person.

The way they set up the volunteer system, they exclude a lot.. It's in the "fine print", but the BIG POSTER has no fine print.. Lots of kids are expecting things when they get out, and most of those things are denied them.

they get used like kleenex, and then tossed

11. Wrong - Every veteran should be provided a college education
just like after WW2 -- that's what created the fifty years of prosperity we had with the "Greatest Generation." We really broke our promise to the VietNam vets.

I actually believe that all education -- pre-k to post-doc (plus continuing, life time learning as the economy, the world, and the country changes and "evolves.") should be free.
