My letter to little Joey Scarbourough re: Schiavo
This is in response to his blog here...

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6330851/

He says, among other things..."But in the end, Americans shocked by this macabre chapter in American politics will see the Democrats as the party on the side of death and see George Bush as the defender of defenseless."

Joe, Joe, Joe...

You fail to understand what most dems do - there is no other choice (and if you look at the polls, most Americans understand this as well).

If nothing else we are a nation of laws and the courts have ruled that Mrs. Schiavo would not have wanted to live this way. We may all wish the laws were different but all the wishes in the world does not make them different right now. That's the difference between most of us and the right wing extremists (Bush included) - we recognize the reality of the situation. Doesn't make us the party of death - it makes us the party of reality. If she had written her wishes down on a piece of paper we would not even be having this discussion...absent that piece of paper we have no choice but to turn to the courts - or what? Send in federal marshalls and defy the courts? I don't think so.

Most democrats like myself are not death promoters, we are promoters of civil rights. Absent that piece of paper, her living will, the courts have ruled that it would be against her rights to FORCE her to live this way. To force her to remain on life support via a feeding tube is to force her to live in a way the courts have ruled she didn't want to live...AND, congress and the President tried to extend her misery against her court sanctioned wishes. It's shameful.

Why should the dems, or any other political party, promote any other view when down here in reality, there was no other alternative than to turn to the court system of the United States of America to resolve this issue - from the local state court all the way to the highest court in the land.

Joe, unlike you, I think most people walk away from this with the view that it's a personal family tradegy...and, not that democrats are the party on the side of death and George Bush as the defender of defenseless, but that George Bush and many other republicans USED this case as a disgusting political opportunity. May God have mercy on them.

10. good letter, BUT the decision shouldn't be made in the courts, either.
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 09:19 PM by orangepeel68
it should be a private family matter. It was taken to the courts by Terri Schiavo's parents because they disputed her husband's ability to interpret his wife's wishes and therefore an arbitrator was needed.

on edit: I mean, this decision ended up being made in the courts and should be respected, but, in a less awful situation, it wouldn't be there at all.

16. I didn't mean to imply that YOU had missed that point, but some people did
For example, a saw an editorial cartoon by Chip Bok, who I believe rivals Scarborough in his right wingerness (although I'm not sure of that), that had a man and a woman watching a man on TV talking into a microphone. The man says, "The politicians should butt out. Terri Schiavo's condition is a private family matter for lawyers to decide."

The point of the cartoon being, I believe given the cartoonist, that even though one side (i.e., the right) got politicians involved, the other (i.e., the left) is no better because they have lawyers making the decisions.

Of course, the courts are only making the decisions because the Schindlers contested her husband's right to make the decisions and an arbitrator was needed. But to the extent that this whole fiasco will be used as an assault on the courts, that's an important point.

15. 15 years plus in a hospice and on Medicare.... and the Repubs
Edited on Fri Mar-25-05 09:34 PM by EVDebs
are running Social Security AND Medicare into the ground. I even heard on Keith Olbermann's show on MSNBC from a reporter named Kumar that this possibly started because of a $700,000 court awarded Michael Schaivo the money...and from that point on Terry's family stopped speaking to him.

Now it's immaterial since there's only a few grand left in the court administered account and attorneys are probably going to get much of that.

The end result is I don't want any Republican OR Democratic administration making healthcare decisions FOR me. What will happen is most Americans will begin to fill out forms like California's Probate Code Section 4701. You don't need an attorney to draft one !

17. What I want to know is, what do Democrats have to do with any of this?
Michael Schiavo: Donated to George W. Bush in 1999.
Judge Greer: Republican.

So tell me again how Democrats are causing this to happen?
