He drinks. Heavily. Very heavily in recent years. If he didn't have some kind of conscience, he wouldn't need to blot it all out....

If he has the intelligence to truly comprehend the significance of being called "Pontius Pilate" -- he will truly have a profound crisis, perhaps of faith, perhaps of democracy.

Weird thing is though -- his mother and father are appalled by the circus he has placed himself in the middle of and now can't get out from between.... He's lost everything....
