Scary thought: What if the neocons WANT TO DECLARE MARTIAL LAW?
As the violence escalates around the TS case, with hate radio and pseudoreligious leaders screaming incitement to murder and their followers (with their readily available guns) preparing their attacks, I am wondering: is this part of the plan? An excuse to declare martial law to "protect the citizens"? It would be an effective way to set aside all checks on their power - no annoying judges insisting on the rule of law, no handful of Democrats arguing - not that they have been all that effective.

What if setting up an excuse for declaring martial law is one of their goals?

We know it's what they really want: a fascist theocratic dictatorship. Could they be so bold as to try to force the issue with a declaration of martial law? What do you think? Is my :tinfoilhat: making me crazy to wonder about this?

We have far too many TS threads at DU, so that we are missing VITAL news like this must-read thread in which the new official DOD policy of making preemptive strikes accepted US policy is stated:

Title: "DoD Releases the National Defense and the National Military Strategies"

But I'm breaking my own self-imposed TS moratorium because I really want to know what you think of the martial law idea.

1. Let them. I welcome it.
Anything that more clearly exposes their objectives is fine by me. All it will do is drive the fence-sitters over to our side.

2. Not for this issue....
They don't have the public behind them on this one. They may say they don't read the polls, but that's just another lie.

Something else that can be spun easily, yeah, maybe. But not for this.

3. Can They Really Do It?
without provoking widespread riots? I dunno. Depends on how pessimistic/optimistic one views the public. Will they put up with the martial law crap?

5. That would be an extremely bad idea on their part.
First, the Army would have real problems with this below the * appointees. Second, many police forces would resist. Third, in case any of you have forgotten for just a moment, we are a frigging armed camp and many of the people who have guns have them because they fear such a scenario. Finally, this would crash the stock market, period. If they did anything like this, there would be an uprising that would make anything before it seem mild. No way they would suceed with this.

9. It only occurred to me this evening - I'm not exactly serious, but wonder

what other people think of the possibility. Is it something that is already in the air? Are the neocons really capable of planning for something like this?

So I'm asking the question and hoping for some cogent reasons why it is NOT a real possibility.

8. You would have to have something like
every single city in the US from NY to LA in flames for them to even consider be able to pass martial law. What we have here is a few fundies flapping their gums.

10. not directly
This appears to be about radicalizing their base, pushing the looney fundy right into militancy. First they need blood in the streets, then they can declare martial law in order to clean up the mess. Perhaps the next protest from the left will see something on the order of the infamous 'hard hats' the nixonites organized. Gotta have lawlessness to justify martial law.

Bush** just finished spending all of that 'man-dating capital' he acquired from the last selection. So I'm thinking they see this as a win, regardless of the plunge the polls are taking. But what are they winning?

Or.... it is misdirection. We are not supposed to be looking anywhere except at the TS trauma. So what is really going on? Chaos in Kygryzstan? Oil Peak? Iraqi Selection crumbling into chaos? What are we not supposed to notice?

11. Some of the things we are NOT supposed to be noticing: READ THESE!
So far these threads have received only a small ripple of interest because of the TS mania that has largely driven normal discourse from DU. I consider them must-reads:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1686257
Title: "DoD Releases the National Defense and the National Military Strategies"
As the poster points out: "Hey folks! THIS PLAN MAKES PRE-EMPTIVE, UNILATERAL ATTACKS US POLICY!"

and on a less frightening but still deeply disturbing note:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3316529
Title: "Secret US plan to derail European fight against illegal rainforest logging"

In fact, there's a WHOLE THREAD of topics that are being missed because of Schiavo mania:

12. The Likelihood Of Bush Declaring Martial Law Over This
is as likely as being going into my bedroom and waking up Jessica Alba for our sixth round of coitus since supper...

on their part. Then you will probably see open rebellion as well.
