RIO DE JANEIRO, Oct. 23 (EIRNS) — Rev. Moon's cult has been the subject of a multi-agency, federal and state, national security investigation in Brazil, since at least July 2001.
The investigations were undertaken at the initiative of the Army, because the Moon cult was accumulating enormous, contiguous tracts of land on both sides of the Paraguayan and Brazilian border--in an area very near the Triple Border region (where Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay meet), notorious for drug, arms and other contraband.

It was estimated back in 2001, that the Moonies had made a $2 billion dollar investment in building their supposed "Garden of Eden" in the Brazil-Paraguay area. The Brazilian magazine {Isto E} described it in this way in its Feb. 19, 2002 story, "Paradise Under Suspicion":

"A kind of independent territory is being created in silence, in an area between the border of Brazil and Paraguay. It is the tropical paradise of Rev. Sun Myung Moon, formed through a succession of nature preserves, where the rivers Nabilequie, Miranda, Paraguai, Prata, and Salobra cross. In total, the properties add up to 833,000 hectares, which is the equivalent of more than three Luxembourgs, the European Grand-Duchy. In it, would fit the whole Federal District, plus the cities of Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. If the lands were used for agrarian reform, they would be enough to provide for 41,650 families. Although they are not yet continguous, the lands being acquired are so close to one another that it is impossible to imagine that this is not being done to unify them."

That occurred to me as I read the articles. Was this the warning and then tool of influence forcing the BFEE association with Moon? I don't know what sway Moon had prior to the WashTimes scandal piece. Any ideas?

In 1976, the FBI and CIA led by Mr. Bush did a number on more than a few Democratic congressmen in the ABSCAM sting operation. One guy ensnared for tax evasion was Rev. Moon who went to jail. He opened his newspaper in 1982.

We have already had occasion to examine Don Gregg's role in Iran-Contra, and have observed his curious performance when testifying under oath before congressional committees. Gregg indignantly denied any connection to Spence, yet it is public record that Spence had sponsored a dinner in Gregg's honor in the spring of 1989 at Washington's posh Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown.

George Bush was less than pleased with the media coverage of the prostitution charges and kept abreast of the scandal as it mushroomed. The Washington Times reported in an article titled ``White House Mute on Call Boy Scandal,'' that ``White House sources confirmed that President Bush has followed the story of the late night visit and Mr. Spence's links to a homosexual prostitution ring under investigation by federal authorities since they were disclosed June 29 in the Washington Times. But top officials will not discuss the story's substance, reportedly even among themselves.

Moon has business dealings that are more convoluted and controversial than those of Enron. One difference is that Moon has been convicted of a crime and Enron CEO Ken Lay has not.
What's more, Moon has a controversial business relationship with North Korea. And the Washington Times has concealed it.
Some members of Congress may have thought they were honoring the Washington Times on its 20th anniversary and that they were scheduled to hear Dr. Laura Schlessinger. Perhaps like them, Dr. Schlessinger thought she was honoring the Washington Times when she accepted an invitation to speak there on the evening of May 21. Like conservatives nationwide, the paper supported her when she came under assault by the militant homosexual lobby. But then she discovered that the paper's founder, Sun Myung Moon, was going to be the keynote speaker, and that she was being asked to "recognize the contribution of the founder" in her remarks. The official invitation to the event shows that her remarks are supposed to precede his speech, providing a photo opportunity so that he can appear on stage with her.

Was it some sort of internal turf war. It is just fascinating that this came out and ran for a week. Who was sending a message to whom?

Moon owns Bush. The paper makes that as clear as day.

IMO: The internal conflict arose in how much to pursue the story. It IS telling that the story came out. However, George Bush follows orders. So do the people in the paper.

The head cheese at the time, IMS, was Arnaud de Borchgrave a CIAwannabe hack if there ever was one. A classy fella who made his point, ran a bunch of stories. Stopped and moved on. The Bush Gang got the point.

Well Paul Rodriguez and George Archibald are the authors of the story and they're still walking around. They probably know the entire story but since I don't run in their crowd, I'll have to speculate.

The date on the story in June 29, 1989. This is before the Gulf War but after the Tienanmen Square uprising. Bush made some remarks encouraging the uprising and may have considered a policy to really rock the boat in China. This would not please those who wanted predictable government policies and sweat shops. In this scenario, the story, run for just a week, was a warning shot, a message to cool down. It came from the one source that could be controlled completely, a source with an inside cover (your comment about de Borchgrave and the CIA). That's just a possible scenario. "Management" wanted to make a point to Bush and company, don't fuck around or this is what you get. This does make sense. Some very large organizations do quite well hiring functionaries who are somewhat capable but posses one or two major flaws, usually of the scandalous kind.

Since the Wash Times is a "house organ" and totally controlled, the fact that this was even investigated, let alone featured, had a very specific and meaningful point for the subjects of the story, the Bush White House.

Intriguing. Someday, hopefully soon, we'll find out.

Better be careful, wouldn't want a follow up story.

Christian Dominionism and Bush's faith in God as he goes to war have disturbed me for some time. If Christian Dominionists have their way, it appears we'll have a theocracy and I really don't like their plans for the US if they get powerful enough.

Having read all I can on the subject, a Christian Dominionist theocracy would be hell. It would be the opposite of being free. And it would also be the opposite of "freedom of religion".

Did anyone ever read Margaret Attwood's "The Handmaid's Tale"? I found it very disturbing years ago, before I knew anything of what I know now. It's about a theocratic government (dictator? I can't remember, but I guess it was a dictatorship) and the enormous suppression of free speech, and indeed the whole life of the people under their rule.

I wouldn't worry so much if he wasn't so connected to Pat Robertson. Read this from "The Despoiling of America".

Reverend Sun Myung Moon, spiritual leader of the Unification Church, self-proclaimed Messiah, multimillionaire and a generous contributor to the US Republican Party, has been showing a strong interest over the last five years in little-known Paraguay at the centre of the South American continent.

Since 1999, Rev Moon has built his personal empire which begins on the marshy banks of the River Paraguay and stretches beyond the hazy, level horizon through 600,000 hectares of arid land - equivalent to more than two Luxembourgs - punctuated by solitary clusters of withered trees and sad bushes which struggle desperately for air.

The scorching sun beats relentlessly on one of Latin America's most desolate zones. It is here in the northern province of Chaco, directly above the GuaranI aquifer, the largest resource of fresh drinking water in the world, where Moon's associates claim he wishes to build an ecological paradise.

Nevertheless, national Senator Domingo Laino sees a different pattern in Moon's acquisitions. "There are two principal branches to Moon's interest in Paraguay," he said, "control of the largest fresh drinking water source in the world and control of the narcotics business", which is so prevalent in this area. "President Lula told me that Brazil took serious measures to curb Moon a few years back as it became evident that he was buying up the border between our two countries," said the senator.

Allegations from local law enforcement officials support this claim. The so-called Dr Montiel, Paraguay's drugs tsar from 1976-89, said: "The fact that they came and bought in Chaco and on both sides of the Brazilian border is very telling. It is an enormously strategic point in both the narcotics and arms trades and indeed the available intelligence clearly shows that the Moon sect is involved in both these enterprises."

RIO DE JANEIRO -- In a region that borders one of the world's great wildlife preserves, Rev. Sun Myung Moon proclaimed after a fishing trip in 1994 that he would build a heavenly haven for his followers.

The Moon organization's sprawling ranch compound in Brazil's vast southwestern interior is several hours from the nearest major city. But much is promised at New Hope Ranch for those making the journey, with a fabled sign at its entrance reading, "Welcome to the Garden of Eden."

However, state legislators, the governor and federal police in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul are investigating the paradise founded by the 82-year-old leader of the Unification Church. The inquiries come, they say, as Moon has acquired more than 1 million acres straddling the border of Brazil and Paraguay over the past seven years.

Last week, federal police raided several sites of Moon's Brazil organization, the Association of Families for Unification and World Peace, both in Mato Grosso do Sul and also in Sao Paulo state. They seized records and computers in a broad investigation into allegations of tax evasion and immigration violations.

Police also targeted the residence and offices of Rev. Kim Yoon Sang, the Brazilian representative for Moon and his religious group. The state legislature of Mato Grosso do Sul also has an ongoing inquiry, as does Brazil's internal revenue service.
Federal police reported that they began investigating Moon's organization late last year after a former employee said the association was involved in money laundering. A federal judge authorized the seizure of banking and financial records earlier this year.

Farrish, who is married to Sarah Sharp, the daughter of a Du Pont heiress, had worked with Bush as an aide during the 1964 senate campaign.

Farrish was rich enough to extend his largesse even to Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, probably the richest individual in the world. The Queen has visited Farrish's horse farm at least four times over the past few years, travelling by Royal Air Force jetliner to the Blue Grass Airport in Lexington, Kentucky, accompanied by mares which Her Majesty wishes to breed with Farrish's million-dollar prize stallions. Farrish magnanimously waives the usual stud fees for the Queen, resulting in an estimated savings to Her Majesty of some $800,000. Farrish's social circle is rounded out by such plutocrats as Clarence Scharbauer, a fellow member of the horsey set who also happens to own the bank, the hotel, the radio station, oil wells, and an estimated one half of the city of Midland, Texas, the old Bush bastion in the Permian Basin.

Farrish has been described as the Bush regime's counterpart to Bebe Rebozo, Richard Nixon's sleazy crony. According to Bush, when he is watching movies, hunting, and playing tennis with his old friend Farrish, "we talk about issues. Michael York of the Washington Post wrote that "Farish says he'll always be one of Bush's biggest boosters, and he's ready at a moment's notice to make the resume argument in favor of Bush's being the best-prepared man ever to become president. It's also clear that Bush regularly asks Farish's advice on the budget, domestic policy, and politics." The Farish family was devastated by the exposure. Son William Stamps Farish, Jr., a lieutenant in the Army Air Force, was humiliated by the public knowledge that his father was fueling the enemy's aircraft; he died in a training accident in Texas six months later. I haven't yet had time to really get a handle on the Farishes, but it sounds like there may be quite a story here. That is, the Farishes may have been discussed in some depth in books and perhaps even on this forum, but it sounds like even The Guardian missed a big story a couple days ago!

Farish on hand to introduce President Bush to Prince Charles

Prominent owner and breeder William S. Farish introduced President George Bush and first lady Laura Bush to Prince Charles after Air Force One arrived at London’s Heathrow Airport on Tuesday.

Farish, the United States Ambassador to Great Britain and Northern Ireland, played a key role in arranging President Bush’s trip, according to the Washington Post.

Close ties between Queen Elizabeth II and Farish are, in part, attributed to their shared interest in the racing industry, the Post reports. The queen sends mares to Farish’s Lane’s End near Versailles, Kentucky, and she has visited the farm.

I did some investigation of his family several months ago and found a number of very interesting connections.

Farish's wife is the former Sarah Sharp, daughter of Bayard Sharp (1913-2002), a close friend of George H.W. and Barbara Bush. Bayard's mother was Isabella Mathieu du Pont, whose three brothers successively headed E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company between 1915 and 1940. They were admirers of Hitler, funded multiple fascist organizations in the US, and were behind the plot to overthrow FDR in 1934.

Farish's mother was Mary Wood, daughter of General Robert E. Wood, who was chairman of the isolationist America First Committee in 1940 and became a prominent figure in the extreme right after World War II. Wood corresponded extensively with Senator Joseph McCarthy and supported many right-wing groups, particularly in Texas. He was also in touch with a group of revisionist historians who were pushing the notion that Roosevelt had sold out to the Soviet Union and that the State Department had deliberately handed China over to the communists.

Farish's aunt, Martha Botts Farish, was married to Edward Harriman Gerry, nephew of Averell Harriman and brother of Elbridge Gerry, who was a partner in Brown Brothers Harriman & Company. That marriage seems to have been a major factor in bringing the Farishes and the Bushes together, although they were already acquainted through the oil industry.

Farish's grandmother, the wife of William Stamps Farish, Sr., was Libbie Botts Rice. That's Botts as in the lawfirm of Baker and Botts, of which her grandfather was a co-founder, and Rice as in Rice University, which in the century since its founding has persistently been tied in with Houston oil interests. (In recent years, Rice was closely entangled with Enron.)

Libbie's sister, Ella Botts Rice, was briefly married to Howard Hughes in the 1920's, just after he had inherited the rights to a drill bit which his father had invented and which was essential to the oil industry. While Hughes was a minor, his assets were controlled by the Rice Board of Directors.
And, for what it's worth, the elder Farish's great-grandmother was the sister of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.
Altogether, a very strange and powerful family.

The John F. Kennedy assassination represents a theme in our political history. The causes, even the inevitability, of the assassination were born out of the power struggles among the ruling elite which are consistent throughout the American story. These struggles revolve around questions of what is the proper role of government vis a vis the business community’s pursuit of its own self-interest. Is the government’s role minimal or laissez-faire? Should government only provide a stable environment of "law and order", through increased police powers, conducive to the maximization of profits and the minimization of workers wages and benefits? Or does the government have a higher purpose? Is it responsible for the common good? Is it the one entity capable of implementing justice, equality, and a partial redistribution of wealth through the regulation and taxation of corporations in order to provide a cushion against the more egregious effects of the free market? Should it ensure the worker’s share in the profits they helped to create?

At various times factions of what has become known as "corporate America" have argued over which role of government is ultimately more advantageous to their own ends. Generally speaking, banking and Wall Street favor less government. Retail, light manufacturing and small to medium size corporations are more tolerant of an activist government which might put more money in the hands of their consumers, and protect small businesses against the unfair competitive practices of larger corporations.

The stock market crash of 1929 and the ensuing Great Depression dramatically thrust the question of government’s role to the forefront of American political and corporate life. The election of Franklin Delano Roosevelt represented a revolutionary realignment of political power: the ascendancy of the Democratic party facilitated by new voting coalitions of rural south and industrialized north which dislodged the Republican Party’s nearly seventy-year dominance, signaling the abandonment of laissez-faire economics in favor of state regulation. The losers in this political process coalesced into right-wing Republicanism, and the next sixty years of American history is, in part, the story of their attempt to regain power, reinstitute Lassiez-faire policies, and dismantle the New Deal.1 I would like to suggest that the forces behind the assassination of President Kennedy were born in the furies which the Great Depression unleashed between these competing sectors of American political and economic life.

I believe that in 1934 there was a foreshadowing of the JFK assassination. A conspiracy was uncovered in which right-wing elements of big business, namely the DuPont family and the Morgan banking interests, planned to finance and arm a veteran’s army to march on the White House and hold President Roosevelt captive.2 The conspiracy was reported by two- time Congressional Medal of Honor winner Marine Corps Major General Smedley Darlington Butler. Although the House Committee to Investigate Un-American Activities found his allegations credible, it failed to call major conspirators to testify, and the Committee deleted crucial testimony from its final report to the public. The press relegated the story to the back pages, and discredited those, including Major Butler, who tried to alert the public to the threat against republican government. No prosecutions were forthcoming from the Justice Department, in part because the main witness who would have substantiated Butler’s claims died suddenly from pneumonia at the age of 37. In short, there was a cover-up, maybe worse.

A Corrupted Election

Despite what you may have heard, the exit polls were right

Recall the Election Day exit polls that suggested John Kerry had won a convincing victory? The media readily dismissed those polls and little has been heard about them since.

Many Americans, however, were suspicious. Although President Bush prevailed by 3 million votes in the official, tallied vote count, exit polls had projected a margin of victory of 5 million votes for Kerry. This unexplained 8 million vote discrepancy between the election night exit polls and the official count should raise a Chinese May Day of red flags.

The U.S. voting system is more vulnerable to manipulation than most Americans realize. Technologies such as electronic voting machines provide no confirmation that votes are counted as cast, and highly partisan election officials have the power to suppress votes and otherwise distort the count.

Exit polls are highly accurate. They remove most of the sources of potential polling error by identifying actual voters and asking them immediately afterward who they had voted for.

The reliability of exit polls is so generally accepted that the Bush administration helped pay for them during recent elections in Georgia, Belarus and Ukraine. Testifying before the House Committee on International Relations Dec. 7, John Tefft, deputy assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, explained that the Bush administration funded exit polls because they were one of the "ways that would help to expose large-scale fraud." Tefft pointed to the discrepancy between exit polls and the official vote count to argue that the Nov. 22 Ukraine election was stolen.

Davis of Illinois, Harold E Ford Jr. of Tennessee, Sanford D. Bishop Jr. of Georgia and Republicans Rep. Roscoe G. Bartlett of Maryland, Christopher B. The Rev. Moon, who was decked out in a campy floor-length cape, was presented with an ornate gold crown and a lifetime achievement award. How do banks with their great air of respectability fit into the drug-trade with all of its attendant filth? It is a very long and complicated story, which could be the subject of a book on its own. One way in which banks participate is by financing front-companies importing the chemicals needed to process raw-opium into heroin. The Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (HSBC) with a branch-office in London is right in the middle of such trade through a company called TEJAPAIBUL, which banks with Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. What does this company do? It imports into Hong Kong most of the chemicals needed in the heroin-refining-process.

The actual financing for this trading is hived off to the Bangkok Metropolitan Bank. Thus, the secondary-activities connected with processing opium, while not in the same category as the opium-trade, nevertheless generates substantial income for banks. But the real income of the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank (HSBC) and indeed all banks in the region is financing the actual opium-trade.

Sutton's approach to conspiracy genera was spliced with the anti-communist venom of Robert Welch and his theory of the "Hegelian Dialectic," the time-tested strategy of left-right tensions. Sutton's racial views were certainly curious for one who wore his patriotism on his sleeve. He was an advocate of separation between the races in South Africa.         Guy Bannister, a Birch Society pamphleteer, was Lee Harvey Oswald's handler at 544 Camp Street in New Orleans. Bannister employed an investigator, Jack S. Martin, a fascist co-conspirator with his boss and Charles Willoughby-Weidenbach (formerly General MacArthur's intelligence chief in Korea), a core strategist in the Kennedy assassination, according to Mae Brussell, Dick Russell and others. Bannister was a drunkard, a former FBI agent and Naval Intelligence officer. He published a racist newsletter. He choreographed the activities of a group of anti-Castro Cubans in New Orleans. He died nine months after the murder of John Kennedy.

     Jim Garrison investigated Oswald's connection to Bannister and CIA pilot David Ferrie. The devout, alcoholic anti-communist had Oswald passing out Fair Play for Cuba flyers on street corners.

     What would Bannister and his fellow Birchers say if they could speak openly, sans the Jeffersonian platitudes and geopolitical shaggy-dog  tales? In a privately-published paper on Charles Willoughby-Weidenbach, "Looking for 'Hate' in all the 'Right' Places," political researcher William Morris McLoughlin can't resist speaking for the Birchers: "We have been sitting on our hands and 'gnawing the rug' since 1945, when, as far as we are concerned, World War III actually began, with the murder of our hero, John Birch in Manchuria, China" The war was waged "entirely by members of various national and international right-wing, militantly extremist groups still united under the auspices and control of the World Anti-Communist League. Its U.S. affiliates include the U.S. Council for World Freedom and the American Security Council, part of the Liberty Lobby, as well as other organizations," including the Birch Society.

     The JBS waged its grass-roots, populist approach to psychological warfare with much scape-goating. In The Radical Right (Random House, 1967), Epstein and Arnold offer that at the 1965 convention of the Christian Crusade, another fascist front, General Walker, "in speaking of the man who killed Lee Harvey Oswald, President Kennedy's assassin, urged his listeners not to forget that Ruby's name was Rubenstein, and they can't change that fact no matter how often they refer to him as Ruby."

The conspiracy art of Mark Lombardi: Crime-fighting tool—or 'just here to help'?

Much is being made lately of the FBI's phone call to the Whitney Museum in the immediate aftermath of the 9-11 attacks requesting access to Mark Lombardi's drawing BCCI, ICIC & FAB (1996-2000). This piece, the last work the artist made before he was found dead in his studio in March 2000, an apparent suicide at age 49, represents the tangled web of power and influence that comprised the largest banking scandal in history—in which an impenetrable network of holding companies, affiliates, subsidiaries, and banks-within-banks laundered billions of dollars while supporting terrorism, arms and drug trafficking, and prostitution. The names of Saddam Hussein and George H.W. Bush, among many other high- and low-profile world figures, are connected by a network of delicate, yet potently insinuating, pencil lines. The FBI agent who called was informed that the work was on view in the museum's galleries, where he was welcome to see it during it during regular museum hours. A visit to the current Mark Lombardi exhibition at the Drawing Center (35 Wooster Street, through December 18) by an affiliate of the Homeland Security Agency has also raised eyebrows in the art world.

The typical response to these incidents has been one of startled indignation: We don't want Big Brother snooping around our museums, galleries, and studios. Yet wafting about these protestations is a hint of relief and even pride. Attention from the feds accomplishes, for some, what so many of us have had trouble doing. It proves that art really matters . . . even to national security! Surrounded by constant reminders of our vulnerability, some may feel, albeit unconsciously, the need for art to do its part and so imagine that Lombardi has arrived just in time to secure the place of the fine arts in the emerging national paradigm of surveillance, paranoia, and control. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the claims being made for Lombardi's relevance to the war on terror are rather overblown. No one knows if the FBI ever made it to the Whitney, and the Homeland Security guy was not on active duty. In fact, Lombardi's drawings don't reveal that much. According to his own iconographic code, a line with an arrow, for example, simply signifies "influence." So, a series of arrows leading across the BCCI, ICIC & FAB drawing from Bush to Saddam does not necessarily mean that the two were in cahoots, as conspiracy theorists might wish to deduce.

What Lombardi's works tell us is not the specifics of the connections between people, but simply that such connections exist. His drawings play across the surface of scandal and intrigue. This is not the sort of thing America's spies really need. Indeed, as far as tools for unraveling the networks of evil are concerned, they may already have the biggest and best at hand. Under the guidance of John Poindexter, of Iran-Contra fame, the Defense Department developed the Total Information Awareness (TIA) program last year, a vast computerized database that, according to the official TIA website, utilizes "topsight"—a term coined by tech guru David Gelertner—to enable users "to see the whole thing." (TIA's funding was stopped by Congress in September.) What is the "whole thing?" It's the same territory explored by Lombardi: the network of individuals, organizations, deals, transfers, and transactions that constitute the de facto architecture of global power. Unlike Lombardi's beautiful but superficial diagrams, TIA goes wide and deep, providing big-picture scenarios while simultaneously zeroing in on individual players and their possible motives in the emerging global-terror drama.

Curiously, in the last year of his life, Lombardi created a series of works that suggest he was leaning toward a more Platonic conception of the networks his research had uncovered. In these pieces, the pattern of lines resolves clearly into perfect or near perfect spheres. By indicating the existence of a unifying gestalt, Lombardi edges toward the conception of networks articulated by the philosopher and theologist Teilhard de Chardin. Credited by some with conceiving the Internet avant la lettre, Teilhard postulated a kind of global consciousness that he called the Noosphere. Recently, followers of his theories have launched the Global Consciousness Project, a worldwide effort that draws on the Internet's extraordinary capability for synthesizing vast amounts of information drawn from remote locations. Computers worldwide feed into a central database information concerning human behaviors on a massive scale (e.g., strikes, armed conflicts) and attempt to measure a cause-and-effect relation—energetically speaking—among them. Their efforts are intended precisely to discern the kind of background pattern revealed in so many of Lombardi's final works.

As opening day ticked closer for Moon's Tiempos del Mundo, leading South American newspapers were busy recounting unsavory chapters of Moon's history, including his links with South Korea's feared intelligence service and with violent anti-communist organizations that some commentaries said bordered on neo-fascist.

Indeed, in the early 1980s, amid widespread human rights abuses, Moon had used friendships with the military dictators in Argentina and Uruguay to invest in those two countries. Moon was such a pal of the Argentine generals that he garnered an honorary award for siding with Argentina's junta in the Falklands War.

More recently, Moon has been buying large tracts of agricultural lands in Paraguay. La Nacion reported that Moon had discussed these business ventures with Paraguay's ex-dictator Alfredo Stroessner.

When Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass., uncovered more evidence of contra drug trafficking in 1986, The Washington Times denounced him. The newspaper first published articles suggesting that Kerry was on a wasteful political witch hunt. "Kerry's anti-contra efforts extensive, expensive, in vain," announced one Times article.

But when Kerry exposed more and more contra wrongdoing, The Washington Times changed tactics. In 1987, it began intimidating Kerry's staff with front-page accusations that they were obstructing justice. "Kerry staffers damaged FBI probe," declared one Times article. It opened with the assertion that "congressional investigators for Sen. John Kerry severely damaged a federal drug investigation last summer by interfering with a witness while pursuing allegations of drug smuggling by the Nicaraguan resistance , federal law enforcement officials said."

The Life and Moonie Times of George HW Bush

To follow up on yesterday's post, let's consider one of the enduring riddles of the Bush White House call boy scandal (that is, the other Bush White House, and the other call boy): why, of all the media empires to break the story and run with it, often page one and above the fold, was it that of the Unification Church?

The expressed purpose of The Washington Times since Reverend Sun Myung Moon launched it in 1982 has been to provide a conservative Republican voice in the US capital. Paul Weyrich has called it an "antidote" to The Washington Post, its "liberal competitor." (Yeah, me neither.) The unexpressed purpose has been to win for Moon influence over US politicians. Sometimes, the two are in conflict. In fact, to succeed, on occassion they must be.

Perpetual deference makes for a fine doormat, but I've yet to wipe my feet on one of influence. And certainly Moon hasn't shovelled more than a billion dollars down the Times' boiler to have Republican feet, even Bush feet, wiped upon his satin robes.

So I'm wondering (and it's thanks to this discussion generated by yesterday's post): did the Times initially play this story as big as it did in order to win influence over the Bush White House? In other words, Look - we got the goods - what you gonna do about it? The Times said it had the names of Spence's clients, and that they included politicians, as well as military, media and business figures. Blackmail, it's called in impolite circles. This could explain why the scandal was made to go away virtually overnight, the names undisclosed. Because, they did something about it.

"In the early stages of the Reagan Revolution that embraced the Washington Times and Moon's anti-Communist movement, it was embarrassing to be caught at a Moon event," wrote The Gadflyer last year. "Until George H.W. Bush appeared with Moon in 1996, thanking him for a newspaper that 'brings sanity to Washington.'" That was while on an extended trip to South America in Moon's company. A Reuters' story of Nov 25 of that year describes the former president as "full of praise" for Moon at a banquet in Buenos Aires, toasting him as "the man with the vision." (And Moon helped Bush out with his own vision thing, paying him $100,000 for the pleasure of his company.) Bush and Moon then travelled together to Uruguay, "to help him inaugurate a seminary in the capital, Montevideo, to train 4,200 young Japanese women to spread the word of his Church of Unification across Latin America."

And I can't help but wonder about Moon's "enthronement" ceremony last year in the Capitol's Dirksen Building, in which he crowned himself humanity’s "savior, Messiah, Returning Lord and True Parent." The coronation was attended by Representatives Danny Davis (D-Ill.), Curt Weldon (R-Pa.), Roscoe Bartlett (R-Md.) and others. Davis, in white gloves, placed a jeweled crown on the head of the Reverend's wife. Asked later if he thought it unusual, Davis replied "I see people crowned. I go to parades quite a bit … the queen of the homecoming parade, queen of the festival."

Behind the Times: Who Pulls The Strings at Washington's No. 2 Daily?

The Washington Times, the right-wing daily that bills itself as an alternative to the Washington Post, is owned and influenced by Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church. But most journalists seem unable or unwilling to consider the political implications of this fact -- despite the role of Washington Times executives in the Koreagate scandal of the 1970s and the Iran-contra scandal today.

Since its inception in 1982, the Washington Times has gained a circulation of about 100,000 and the endorsement of President Ronald Reagan, who reads it every day. Founding editor and publisher James Whelan resigned in July 1984, charging that top Unification Church (UC) officials had taken over the paper in violation of UC guarantees of independence. In 1987, Times editorial page editor William Cheshire and several staff members also resigned over UC interference.

The Washington Times public relations line -- printed as fact in a Time magazine profile (6/15/87) -- maintains that the newspaper is "owned by a group of Korean investors affiliated with the Unification Church." These "investors" -- the Korean-based Tong-II Industries -- do not seem to view the Times as a profit-making venture. Current Times editor-in-chief Arnaud de Borchgrave told the Washington Post (5/6/87) that a Tong-II executive described one of the company's factories as "the logistical tail of the Washington Times." "They are very conscious of the fact that a certain portion of their profit comes to us to meet the subsidy," de Borchgrave said.

Three NWC executives are not only top Unification Church officials, but have also had high-ranking posts in the Korean CIA (KCIA). Sang Kook Han, a "personal assistant" to the KCIA director in the early 1960s, later served as South Korea's ambassador to Norway and Panama. In 1984, Han was installed at the Washington Times, precipitating the resignation of editor James Whelan. Currently senior vice president of New World Communications, Han is described by Whelan as the "de facto publisher" and "inspector general" of the Times.

Heavenly Deception



There was a thoughtful and rather uncomfortable piece by Bill Moyers that appeared a couple of weeks ago, one I'm sure he never expected to write, entitled "There is No Tomorrow":

One of the biggest changes in politics in my lifetime is that the delusional is no longer marginal. It has come in from the fringe, to sit in the seat of power in the Oval Office and in Congress. For the first time in our history, ideology and theology hold a monopoly of power in Washington.

I've reported on these people, following some of them from Texas to the West Bank. They are sincere, serious and polite as they tell you they feel called to help bring the rapture on as fulfillment of biblical prophecy.... The last time I Googled it, the rapture index stood at 144 -- just one point below the critical threshold when the whole thing will blow, the son of God will return, the righteous will enter Heaven and sinners will be condemned to eternal hellfire.

I think Moyers misses something important here, but I can't fault him. When the lights are going out, it's hardest to see the darkest things. And especially hard for someone like Moyers, who's accustomed to reading events by the light of liberal Reason. But while Bush's evangelical base is undoubtedly, for the most part, sincere in its convictions, I believe the Bush White House is no more Christian than it is genuinely conservative. Which is to say, not at all. And the same, I suspect, goes for many of the religious leaders who stump for an agenda which seems cribbed from a comic book version of the Book of Revelations.

In other words, the top-down expressions of apocalyptic, fundamentalist faith represent a screen theology, to deceive the sincerely devout - for instance, that Bush is a "godly man" who holds power by the "will of God" in these "Last Days" - and to mask the true hearts and intentions of the gangster elite. At best, they are hypocrites. And if they are worse than that, then they are much worse.

Many of America's conservative Christians may be surprised to learn their Christian Right isn't so Christian anymore. Over the past 15 years, it's been largely bought, borrowed, compromised and blackmailed by Reverend Sun Myung Moon. And what Moon represents is yet another hub in the fascist/intelligence/criminal nexus of money laundering, drug trafficking and arms dealing we frequently see behind the thinning veil of America.

In my last post I speculated that Moon may have dangled unsavoury details of the White House call boy scandal over the head of George HW Bush in order to gain influence. It's certainly true that, just a few years before, Moon was either an embarrassment or a pariah to Republicans and evangelicals alike. (That was when they were merely alike, and not, effectively, one and the same.) In 1978, Jerry Falwell told Esquire that "Reverend Sun Myung Moon is like the plague: he exploits boys and girls, and he should be exported ." Then, in 1994, one of Moon's many front organizations gifted Falwell's Liberty Baptist University $3.5 million, and otherwise forgave tens of millions of dollars in debt. Falwell's college was saved, by Moon, and surprise: Falwell changed his tune.

How does he do it? Where has Moon drawn his billions, to make the empires of Falwell and Pat Robertson look like Virginia Beach sand castles? Investigative reporter Robert Parry asks the same question in last September's "Mysterious Republican Money":

Limited investigations of Moon’s organization have revealed large sums of money flowing into the United States mostly from untraceable accounts in Japan, where Moon had close ties to yakuza gangster Ryoichi Sasakawa. Former Moon associates also have revealed major money flows from shadowy sources in South America, where Moon built relationships with right-wing elements associated with the cocaine trade, including the so-called Cocaine Coup government of Bolivia in the early 1980s.

Allegations of Moon's relationship to the South American drug trade don't stop with the fall of Klaus Barbie's neo-fascist narco-state. Since 1999, Moon has acquired 600,000 hectares of arid land in Paraguay's northern state of Chaco, bordering Brazil, directly above the world's largest aquifer. Senator Domingo Laino claims that Moon intends to control his nation's narcotics trafficking, as well as the "largest fresh drinking water source in the world."

Paraguay's drugs tsar from 1976-89, Dr Montiel, has said:

The fact that they came and bought in Chaco and on both sides of the Brazilian border is very telling. It is an enormously strategic point in both the narcotics and arms trades and indeed the available intelligence clearly shows that the Moon sect is involved in both these enterprises.

If that's not bad enough, Iran-Contra vet Elliot Abrams - Bush's new "Deputy National Security Adviser for global democracy strategy" - is also deep in Moon's pocket. Abrams spoke at three Moon rallies in 1998, including one in Sao Paolo, Brazil, attacking anti-cult "deprogrammers" and those who hire them to rescue their family members from the Unification Church. According to Abrams - about whom we're expected to believe this matters - it's simply an issue of "religious freedom."

While Moon is a large, and largely hidden, part of the story of the corruption of religion for criminal and covert ends, the story neither begins nor ends with him. There are many examples on the spooky side of life, that demonstrate that evangelical Christianity has been penetrated and exploited by intelligence assets, and that what may sound like a profession of faith may be nothing more a cover story, and a joke at the expense of the faithfully deceived.

Michael Meiring, the Davao City bomber sheltered by US authorities from Philippine justice, confided to acquaintances in Mindanao that he was CIA, but winked that it stood for "Christ in action."

Wally Hilliard, the money man behind the two Florida flight schools which trained the 9/11 pilots, is an avowed evangelical who's former insurance firm in Wisconsin boasted the motto "Hate Sin, Fight Communism, and Back the Pack!" Forty-three pounds of heroin was found on Wally's Lear Jet, just three weeks after Mohammed Atta enrolled; the largest seizure ever in Central Florida. His plane had made dozens of round trips to Venezuela with passengers who always paid cash, and that the plane had been supplied to Hilliard by the same drug smugglers who had outfitted CIA drug smuggler Barry Seal's. Hilliard and his pilot were not charged. The heroin seizure plays like one of those instances in which the DEA gets its wires crossed with the black ops boys. (Daniel Hopsicker tells more, in his Welcome to Terrorland.)

Interestingly, Hilliard is yet another "devout" figure who has bailed out Jerry Falwell, having loaned, and forgiven, the Reverend one million dollars. Shortly after, another curious thing happened: Britannia Aviation was awarded a five-year contract to manage a large maintenance facility at the Lynchburg airport. It was chosen over a seasoned local company worth millions, when it had a book value of only $750, virtually no qualifications, employees or history. Britannia didn't even have the necessary FAA license to fulfill the contract. What it had, however, was Wally Hilliard's hanger at the Venice, Florida flight school, and according to a Drug Enforcement Agency source, a "greenlight" to operate by the DEA. Hopsicker's research suggests Brittania may have been used as part of the protected black ops drug trade, which was much in evidence in Venice.

Indeed, it seems as though there are many interested parties who have bailed out the Reverend Falwell. Hopsicker writes:

"Jerry Falwell got bailed out in the early '90's by a Lynchburg businessman whose son is married to Billy Graham's daughter," a Lynchburg observer told us. "Since then he runs a missionary service called World Help, which flies all over the world."

Many of the flight trainers who had trained the Arab terrorist pilots had also flown missions out of the Venice and Sarasota Florida Airports for such Christian missionary services as televangelist Pat Robertson's Operation Blessing.

It was "Islamic fundamentalist" Osama bin laden who cloaked his covert activities under the cover of religious charities. Were we now discovering that our own government intelligence agencies used the same ruse?

Christian-linked or not, why did a transparent dummy front company like Paul Marten's Britannia Aviation have a 'green light' from the DEA? A green light for what?

Gerard Colby's and Charlotte Dennett's massive work, Thy Will Be Done: Nelson Rockefeller and Evangelism in the Age of Oil, painfully details how the missionaries of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL), also known as Wycliffe Bible Translators, served as proxy soldiers in the CIA's Amazonian genocide.

From a review by Carmelo Ruiz:

The authors found SIL a veritable empire whose missionary activities spanned every country in the Amazon basin, with a network of bases that look more like picket-fenced American suburbia than the frontier outposts for the global economy that they actually are. SIL even has its own air force and communications system, the Jungle Aviation and Radio Service (JAARS), which permits it to act virtually independently from the governments of the countries where it operates. After years of research, Colby and Dennett found a number of irrefutable links between SIL and US counterinsurgency operations. Among these, SIL agressively denied that the native peoples of Brazil and Guatemala were being slaughtered by the military regimes of their countries; it allowed its base in the Ecuadoran Amazon to be used by Green Berets who were combing the Western Amazon for signs of armed insurgency; and it assisted the Peruvian air force, which had napalmed the Mayoruna and Campa Indians.

In the course of their investigation, the authors learned that SIL had a big debt to institutions and individuals associated with the Rockefeller family.... Colby and Dennett found the Rockefeller connection particularly intriguing, and went on to investigate the Rockefeller family's financial interests in the commercial and industrial development of the Brazilian Amazon. In 1941, Nelson Rockefeller was named by president Roosevelt to the post of coordinator of the Office of Interamerican Affairs (CIAA), which ran intelligence and propaganda operations against the Nazis in Latin America. In one of its many flagrant violations of the separation between church and state, SIL assisted the CIAA in its Intensive Language Program for American and Latin American military officers and gathered intelligence on native peoples. As coordinator of the CIAA, Nelson acquired invaluable information about Latin America's untapped natural resources, especially mineral reserves, information that ended up in his files and which he used after the war, when he formed the International Basic Economy Corporation (IBEC). This company became a key component in the post-World War Two opening of the Amazon rainforest to commercial exploitation, a process that eventually led to military dictatorships, genocide of native peoples, loss of biological diversity and unprecedented misery for the majority of Brazilians.

The Rockefeller-led effort to conquer the Amazon and exploit its natural riches had been made possible in no small measure by SIL's missionary activities. Colby and Dennett found a historic parallel in John D. Rockefeller, Sr.'s support for Christian missionaries in the American west, who were compiling extremely useful information on Native American communities, which were potential sources of opposition to the entrance of Standard Oil into their lands.' As a bonus, the evangelization process weakened the American Indians' social structure and so undermined their resolve to fight for their rights. The authors quote Baptist reverend Frederick Gates, who for many years was John D. Sr.'s right-hand man, as saying that "We are only in the very dawn of commerce, and we owe that dawn to the channels opened up by Christian missionaries.... The effect of the missionary enterprise of the English speaking peoples will be to bring them the peaceful conquest of the world."

And speaking of mind control, survivor Kathleen Sullivan told the late Jim Keith in his book Mass Control: Engineering Human Consciousness, that she heard of plans to use Christian evangelists to push belief in the "tribulation" and the "Last Days" as one means of achieving social mastery.

That would sound like a flight of fantasy, if only this were a different world.

Full Moon

Since Jeff Gannon reminded us of Craig Spence, who got us thinking about George HW Bush and Reverend Moon, and then Moon's place of privilege in the parapolitical world, I was interested to see this today on Democratic Underground, which seems to close the circle.

Bobby Eberle is President and CEO of GOPUSA, "a privately-held corporation dedicated to promoting the conservative political philosophy through the distribution of conservative news, information, and commentary via the Internet and special events." Both "gopusa.com" and Gannon's "talonnews.com" are registered in Eberle's name, and TalonNews stories consisted of brief introductory paragraphs, with a link "to read more" which redirected visitors to gopusa.com.

There's an interesting thing about Eberle's online bio, apart from the fact it's no longer online. (Here's its Google cache.) Eberle's opinion pieces, so it says, "have been featured in the Washington Times, Human Events, Insight Magazine, and numerous newspapers across the country." How significant is it that all three listed are Moonie publications? Hard to tell, perhaps, without a list of the "numerous newspapers." But it makes me wonder about the provenance of "GOPUSA," and just who was running a male prostitute in the White House.

And another thing I learned from that DU post: Moon is waging a campaign to persuade American churches to trade the symbolism of a cross for a crown. (A cross is just so, you know, yesterday's Messiah.) Something he probably doesn't include in the ecumenical pitch: the crown represents his own.

As bizarre as it sounds, it's finding success. Here's some indication, from April 2003, and the Unification Church publication True Parent. (And who do you think that might be?)

A truly profound moment in history has occurred. 123 clergy took down their crosses over the Easter weekend. This was supported by another 135 clergy who attended services participating and in accord with this dispensation. All told, 258 clergy directly affirmed the taking down of the cross proclaiming an end the era of bloodshed and sacrifice and the beginning of a new era of faith and resurrection.

The desire of God for the second Israel is now being realized. Christian pastors are uniting with the Lord of the Second Advent and taking down the cross. They are embracing the blessing and coming forward to build the Kingdom of God on Earth. These pastors are standing on the foundation of direct experience with Father during the 50 state tour and the profound leadership he has given to the ACLC through the Blessing of Marriage movement and the courageous public proclamation of the revelations of Jesus and saints from the spirit world which confirm that True Parents are the ones anointed by Jesus to fulfill the second coming.

Interesting, maybe. Disturbing, probably. But so what?

Do you recall the initial ban on the display of crosses for the Bush/Cheney 2005 inauguration parade? Under pressure from Christian activists - apparently of the non-Moonified variety - the Secret Service rescinded the ban. Rev. Patrick Mahoney, the director of the Christian Defense Coalition, called the decision welcome, but added "the original ban was troubling because 'Christianity's most sacred symbol has been singled out as the only religious item prohibited' in the initial regulations."

Perhaps we ought to rethink the rationale for the ban. Could it have been a sop to Moon, one of the Bush family's dearest paymasters, and the figure overshadowing America's "Christian" Right?

Also, if we have the stomach for it, perhaps we should revisit the redecoration of the Lincoln bedroom. Remember? Here's Sidney Blumenthal, writing last Oct 14:

Even now, the White House is being redecorated for President Bush's second term -- or at least one room, the Lincoln Bedroom. The famous long bed will remain; so will the original Emancipation Proclamation in its glass case. But dominating the room, above the bed, will be a large carved crown from which will flow, ceiling to floor, royal purple satin drapes. The crown has been sent to be gilded with gold in anticipation of Bush's triumphant return from his campaign.

Well, perhaps not. Perhaps the crown actually belongs to another.

It would probably blow his mind to hear Alan Watts talk about "It" and "Who You Really Are." LOL!



The Nature Of Consciousness

I find it a little difficult to say what the subject matter of this seminar is going to be, because it's too fundamental to give it a title. I'm going to talk about what there is. Now, the first thing, though, that we have to do is to get our perspectives with some background about the basic ideas that, as Westerners living today in the United States, influence our everyday common sense, our fundamental notions about what life is about. And there are historical origins for this, which influence us more strongly than most people realize. Ideas of the world which are built into the very nature of the language we use, and of our ideas of logic, and of what makes sense altogether.

And these basic ideas I call myth, not using the word 'myth' to mean simply something untrue, but to use the word 'myth' in a more powerful sense. A myth is an image in terms of which we try to make sense of the world. Now, for example, a myth in a way is a metaphore. If you want to explain electricity to someone who doesn't know anything about electricity, you say, well, you talk about an electric current. Now, the word 'current' is borrowed from rivers. It's borrowed from hydrolics, and so you explain electricity in terms of water. Now, electricity is not water, it behaves actually in a different way, but there are some ways in which the behavior of water is like the behavior of electricty, and so you explain it in terms of water. Or if you're an astronomer, and you want to explain to people what you mean by an expanding universe and curved space, you say, 'well, it's as if you have a black balloon, and there are white dots on the black balloon, and those dots represent galaxies, and as you blow the balloon up, uniformly all of them grow farther and farther apart. But you're using an analogy--the universe is not actually a black balloon with white dots on it.

So in the same way, we use these sort of images to try and make sense of the world, and we at present are living under the influence of two very powerful images, which are, in the present state of scientific knowledge, inadequate, and one of the major problems today are to find an adequate, satisfying image of the world. Well that's what I'm going to talk about. And I'm going to go further than that, not only what image of the world to have, but how we can get our sensations and our feelings in accordance with the most sensible image of the world that we can manage to conceive.

All right, now--the two images which we have been working under for 2000 years and maybe more are what I would call two models of the universe, and the first is called the ceramic model, and the second the fully automatic model. The ceramic model of the universe is based on the book of Genesis, from which Judaism, Islam, and Christianity derive their basic picture of the world. And the image of the world in the book of Genesis is that the world is an artifact. It is made, as a potter takes clay and forms pots out of it, or as a carpenter takes wood and makes tables and chairs out of it. Don't forget Jesus is the son of a carpenter. And also the son of God. So the image of God and of the world is based on the idea of God as a technician, potter, carpenter, architect, who has in mind a plan, and who fashions the universe in accordance with that plan.

So basic to this image of the world is the notion, you see, that the world consists of stuff, basically. Primoridial matter, substance, stuff. As parts are made of clay. Now clay by itself has no intelligence. Clay does not of itself become a pot, although a good potter may think otherwise. Because if you were a really good potter, you don't impose your will on the clay, you ask any given lump of clay what it wants to become, and you help it to do that. And then you become a genious. But the ordinary idea I'm talking about is that simply clay is unintelligent; it's just stuff, and the potter imposes his will on it, and makes it become whatever he wants.

Sinclair Broadcasting and the New Project Mockingbird

October 17, 2004

Sinclair Broadcast Group, which plans to air a CIA-agit-prop-style documentary called “Stolen Honor: Wounds that never heal” which is highly critical of John Kerry’s anti-war activities, should be regarded as part of a shadow government operation running a psychological covert action against the American people.

Sinclair plans to air the program October 22 at 8pm, a week and a half before the November 2 election. Sixty-two Sinclair affiliates including a dozen in the battleground states of Ohio, Florida, Iowa and Wisconsin, plan to air the 42-minute long negative campaign ad for George W. Bush in the form of a documentary.

The airing of the documentary to nearly a quarter of all TV markets in the U.S. represents tens of millions of dollars in in-kind campaign donations to the Bush coffers. It is one of the most blatant and illegal uses of the people’s airwaves in U.S. history and another signal that the return of Cold War-era-style covert operations are being unleashed on the American people.

The so-called "documentary" resembles standard U.S. government agitation propaganda films of the 1950s and the usual spooky suspects are involved in its making and showing. Carlton Sherwood, a former Washington Times reporter produced the video. The Washington Times founder is the bizarre cult leader Rev. Sun Myung Moon, who runs a secretive far-flung financial empire with close ties to the Bush family and the South Korean CIA.

In 1992, a PBS Frontline investigation reported that a key money source for Moon's religious cult was the self-proclaimed "World's Richest Fascist," Ryoichi Sasakawa, the man who brought Mussolini's fascism to Japan priot to World War II.

Moon's influence in the United States increased dramatically when then-Vice President George Herbert Walker Bush, former CIA director, invited Moon to be his guest at the Reagan inauguration. Among other things, Moon has said that he arranged for Jesus to enter heaven by marrying him to a dead South Korean woman. More importantly, Moon's eccentric claims overshadow his connections to the Bush family.

Several members of the media have looked into the relationship between the two Bush Presidencies and members of the extreme Religious Right Wing. After reading up on that gang, the only thing I know for sure, is that there is not a single honest person in the whole bunch.

First off, lets take a look at evangelist Doug Wead, a divorced Baptist Minister, and former Diamond distributer, who is still a regular speaker at Amway conventions.

Wead was the first President Bush's liaison to the Christian Right and he later served as Special Assistant to the President in the first Bush White House. Time magazine referred to him as "the man who coined the phrase the compassionate conservative."

He was linked to the second President Bush early on as well. US News and World Report described Wead as an "old friend and advisor" to George W Bush. In the book, First Son, Author and Dallas Morning News Reporter, Bill Mintuglio, said that Wead was a man who had spent years "preparing strategy reports" for both President Bush and GW.

The first example of such links is the Unification Church (UC) of Rev. Sun Myung Moon. Today it is too well-established to be considered a cult; the list of their front groups and businesses in NameBase runs to 28 pages with 667 names.<19> The UC no longer recruits on U.S. campuses the way they used to -- they don't need the money that Moonies would earn from selling flowers at airports, and they don't need this sort of publicity. Instead they buy universities: in 1992 the UC plunked down over $50 million for the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut, and one of the UC's new trustees there is Jack E. Thomas, who was assistant chief of staff for U.S. air force intelligence for six years, and then special
assistant to the CIA director for nine years.<20> Rev. Moon is also a force in Washington today. In 1992 he admitted that over its ten-year history, the Washington Times had cost him "close to one billion dollars."<21> The influence and respectability this provides is presumably worth more than that.

Before the Unification Church was incorporated in the U.S. in 1963 by Bo Hi Pak, Moon had the support of the South Korean Central Intelligence Agency (KCIA). The expansion of the cult into the U.S. was conceived as a means of influencing U.S. politics. Four of Moon's early followers were young army officers close to Kim Jong Pil, the founding director of the KCIA and chief strategist for the Park regime. Bo Hi Pak was the KCIA liaison to U.S. intelligence at the time, stationed in the Korean Embassy in Washington. Today he is one of Moon's top aides and president of the Washington Times. In 1962 Kim made a two-week official visit to the U.S., and Lt.Col. His politics are essentially reactionary and anti-Communist, and he has received political and financial support from Yoshio Kodama, Ryoichi Sasakawa, and other powerful Japanese right-wing figures. I am an evangelical Christian trained at the Fuller Theological Seminary who belongs to Christ and to no one else.... of course, those few individuals who I knew to be Unificationists, I have found them to be decent hardworking and talented men and women who agree with my and the AFC traditional values platform and political philosophy..."


So, he found common ground on traditional values and political philosophy and denies being a follower of Rev. Moon; but, does admit in the article that he had received $5,252,473.00 from Unification Church business interests.

The man who mobilized the religious right puts his conservative connections to work for business.

When the casino-rich Coushatta tribe of Louisiana began a lobbying blitz in 2001 to block three other tribes from opening competing casinos, they hired two of Washington's top influence brokers, lobbyist Jack Abramoff and public relations whiz Michael Scanlon. But Abramoff and Scanlon -- who are now at the center of a Washington scandal sparked by the multimillion-dollar fees they charged several tribal clients -- knew that to win any lobbying campaign in the South, they needed help mobilizing social and religious conservatives. So they turned to one of the best-known names on the religious right: Ralph Reed. Since his departure as head of the Christian Coalition in 1997, Reed has emerged as a highly sought-after corporate consultant, putting his organizing skills and political connections to work for business interests -- even those that conflict with his followers' conservative beliefs.

On the casino issue, Scanlon's company, Capitol Campaign Strategies, paid Reed to help assemble anti-gambling coalitions in Louisiana and Texas. Among other things, those coalitions backed a lawsuit filed by Texas' attorney general that early in 2002 succeeded in shutting down two Texas casinos that posed competition to the Coushattas' highly lucrative operation.

Reed says he has not wavered from his anti-gambling convictions and points out that his company was paid by Scanlon's firm, not the tribe. "We have never been retained by a casino to serve their interests," he says. But antigambling activists say that argument doesn't wash. "When you get paid big money, it's got to be gambling money," says Tom Grey, a Methodist minister who runs the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling. "Ralph Reed with all his sophistication should have known where the money came from."

The gambling work is just one instance in which Reed has used his credentials with the religious right to further his clients' business agendas. Since its founding in 1997, his consulting firm, Century Strategies, has racked up millions in fees from companies including Enron, Microsoft, Verizon, and other Fortune 100 companies, according to sources familiar with its client list.

Reed's value to corporate America has been enhanced by his close ties to the Bush administration and especially to Karl Rove, the president's chief political guru. Not long after Century Strategies started, Rove reportedly helped Reed land an Enron contract worth at least $300,000 to help build support for energy deregulation. Century Strategies did voter-mobilization work for the Bush campaign and the Republican National Committee in 2000; it has been retained again this year for similar projects. Reed has also been serving as Southeast regional coordinator for the Bush campaign, with responsibility for delivering Florida and four other Southern states. Bush campaign manager Ken Mehlman has called Reed "the guy who gets it done" in the South, especially in reaching out to evangelicals and other religious groups and advising the national campaign on strategy.

But Moon's relationships with drug-tainted gangsters and corrupt right-wing politicians go back to the early days of his Unification Church in Asia. Moon's Korea-based church made its first important inroads in Japan in the early 1960s after gaining the support of Ryoichi Sasakawa, a leader of the Japanese yakuza crime syndicate who once hailed Italian dictator Benito Mussolini as "the perfect fascist." In Japan and Korea, the shadowy yakuza ran lucrative drug smuggling, gambling and prostitution rings.

The Sasakawa connection brought Moon both converts and clout because Sasakawa was a behind-the-scenes leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party. On the international scene, Sasakawa helped found the Asian People's Anti-Communist League, which united the heroin-stained leadership of Nationalist China with rightists from Korea, Japan and elsewhere in Asia.

In 1966, the Asian league evolved into the World Anti-Communist League with the inclusion of former Nazis from Europe, overt racialists from the United States and "death squad" operatives from Latin America, along with more traditional conservatives. Moon's followers played important roles in both organizations, which also maintained close ties to the CIA.

South American Drugs

Meanwhile, after World War II, South America was becoming a crossroads for Nazi fugitives and drug smugglers. Nazi war criminal Klaus Barbie, the so-called Butcher of Lyons, earned his living in Bolivia by selling his intelligence skills, while other ex-Nazis trafficked in narcotics. Often the lines crossed.

The S&Ls, the Mob and the Bushs

During the 1980's hundred of Savings and Loan Banks failed. Those bank failures cost U.S. taxpayers over $500 billion to cover federally insured losses, and much more to investigate the bank failures (Pizzo, Fricker, and Muolo, 1989; Brewton, 1992; Johnston, 1990). More than 75% of the Savings and Loan insolvencies where directly linked to serious and often criminal misconduct by senior financial insiders (Pizzo, Fricker and Muolo, 1989: 305). In fact, less than 10 percent of bank failures are related to economic conditions, the rest are caused by mismanagement or criminal conduct (Pizzo, Fricker and Muolo, 1989: 305).

A good example of the Savings and Loan failures can be found in the activities of Mario Renda, a Savings and Loan insider who often worked in close collaboration with organized crime (Pizzo, Fricker and Muolo, 1989: 123-126;302). Renda served as a middle man in arranging about $5 billion a year in deposits into 130 Savings and Loans, all of which failed (Kwitny, 1992: 27). Many of these deposits were made contingent on an agreement that the Savings and Loan involved would lend money to borrowers recommended by Renda, many of whom were organized crime figures or people entirely unknown to the banking institution involved (Kwitny, 1992: 27).

Prescott Bush: The Yakuza’s Frontman

Finally, and perhaps most seriously, the Bush family pioneered the practice which has now become commonplace of collaboration between corporate and organized criminals. Prescott Bush, uncle of the current President and brother of the former President, played a key role in helping the Japanese Yakuza extend their financial and real estate holdings to the United States. In 1989, Prescott Bush made arrangements for a front company for Japanese organized crime groups to buy into two U.S. corporations and to make a sizeable real investment in the U.S. (Helm, 1991a: 1; Isikoff, 1992: A1). West Tsusho, a Japanese corporation, was identified by Japanese police officials as a front company for one of that country’s largest organized crime syndicates. Prescott Bush was paid a fee of $500,000 for his help in negotiating West Tsusho’s purchase of controlling interest in Assets Management, a U.S. corporation (Helm, 1991a: 1; Isikoff, 1992: A1). Bush also assisted the Japanese mob in investing in Quantam Access, a U.S. software company, which was ultimately taken over by the Japanese (Helm, 1991b: 10; Isikoff, 1992: A1). Both companies ultimately went into bankruptcy (Isikoff, 1992: A1; Moses, 1992).

George Bush Sr.: Shutting Down the Organize Crime Strike Forces

Despite assessments from senior law enforcement officers and experts on organized crime that efforts to control organized crime would be crippled, in December 1989, the administration of George Bush, Sr. abolished all 14 regional organized crime strike forces (McAlister, 1989: A 21; Struck out, 1990). The organized crime strike had been created as independent entities so they would not be subject to political influences or bureaucratic wrangling within federal law enforcement. In the two decades of their operation the strike forces had secured convictions of major organized crime figures in several U.S. cities (Struck out, 1990). It is at the very least curious to note that the federal strike force in Miami had been responsible for indicting Miguel Recarey, the man for whom Jeb Bush had intervened with regulators. Organized crime strike forces had similarly indicted Mario Renda, the organized crime liaison to the S& L’s, as well as several other key figures in the Savings and Loan Fiasco (Pizzo, Fricker, and Mulolo, 1989: 112, 120-123, 303, 337).

As Sterling and Peggy Seagrave make clear, the ruling family of Japan has always been governed by others more powerful than themselves. The emperor and imperial family are figureheads used to conceal from the public the real power brokers who lurk behind the "black curtain." These are the family owned and managed businesses or Zaibatsu that include such trans-national corporations as Mitsubishi, Mitsui and Sumitomo amongst others.

The authors say this corporate power has grown stronger, not weaker, and that the "postwar financial cliques share power with nobody. Not with the emperor, who is only a magic wand, and not with elected politicians, who are only hand-puppets. Financial cliques are the most powerful forces in modern Japan." Moreover, Japan's post-war business structure is unlike any other modern industrial society for the simple reason that organised crime are openly factored into it.

Hence the zaibatsu include not only "financiers, bankers and heads of corporations, but underworld bosses" - the so-called Yakuza crime clans.

The financial elite maintain their positions of power by paying bribes. In the same way that Japanese society is regidly structured in certain key way, it should come as no surprise that political bribery and large scale corruption are also disciplined art-forms.

Political bribes are paid in "Bullets" with each shot amounting to 100 million Yen, equivalent to US$800,000. This enables the most powerful families to govern from a position of invisibility - a feature that had dominated the thoughts of Japan's ruling elite throughout recent history....

The police discovered that Prescott Bush , the older brother of President Bush , was working as a consultant to West Tsusho , a Tokyo-based investment company police believe is backed by one of Japan's most powerful underworld figures and which they are investigating for possible violation of foreign exchange laws.

The foreign exchange law violations are related to West Tsusho 's investments in two American companies, Quantum Access, a Houston-based software development company, and Asset Management International Finance and Settlement, a company in which Prescott Bush was a senior adviser until resigning the position last year. According to documents filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Bush recommended the two companies to West Tsusho as investments and was paid a $250,000 commission by West Tsusho for his services in connection with the Asset Management acquisition. Bush also guaranteed some of West Tsusho 's investments, according to the SEC documents. . . .

He's been to meet with Kim Jong II. I don't know. Have you read the Washington Times? We carry a number of stories about Reverend Moon's activities. We have not not reported on that. And I think we've covered it in a fair and unbiased way.
