I dunno whether calling it "overplaying one's hand" is the right metaphor. The only real cards their side has held for the past year, roughly, is that a slight majority of the electorate is the right combination of uninformed, cowardly, unimaginative, and mentally paralyzed to resist any significant change. In short, Terrorism and Values excuses.

It can't last, this rule with so few real cards being held. That's what has Republicans so anxious- the particulars don't matter, political uselessness/bankrupcy of their 'issues' has been coming into view for two or three years now and creeps closer and closer.
