GOOD FRIDAY ANTIWAR DEMONSTRATION AT DULUTH’S AIR NATIONAL GUARD

On Friday, March 25, 2005 at 12 noon, Michele Naar-Obed and Michail Walli of the Loaves and Fishes Catholic Worker, Duluth poured blood and painted on the 148th Fighter Wing of the Air National Guard sign at the entrance to the base while members and friends of the community held a vigil along the road.

Using this holy day of Good Friday, the two poured Michele’s blood in a symbolic gesture with hopes that “our shedding of blood might prevent our military people and Iraqi civilian’s blood from being shed anymore.” The word “no” was painted over the slogan on the 148th’ sign claiming “global power for America.”

Michele recently returned from her third trip to Iraq with the Christian Peacemaker Teams and heard first hand accounts of the US military’s massacre in Fallujah between April and November of 2004. Pictures of Fallujan victims including those of children, were taped to the 148th’ sign. Additionally, they were attached to crosses that the two held during the remainder of the vigil. A statement was issued to members of the Guard asking them to “terminate their contract to kill on command and seed conscientious objector status.”
Michele Naar-Obed and Michael Walli were issued citations for damaging property and were released. They were given an initial court appearance of April 28, 2005.
