Poll question: If you were in a vegetative state for over 5 years, what would you want?
I imagine that most people would choose #2, but I am curious if there are many people out there would prefer to be kept alive.

1. Probably nothing

"I" wouldn't be there. I would not be aware of it, nor would it have any meaning or significance to me.

3. Then don't ever prepare a will or designate a beneficiary for any
sort of insurance.

You won't be there so it won't matter.

7. Absurd reaction

The poll asks what you would want if you were IN a vegetative state.

What you are addressing is what you would want for the disposition of your assets and the care of your survivors in the case of your demise or disability.

Totally different issues. To proactively take responsibility for future potentialities is a responsible thing to do; to worry about what you will feel or want when you can no longer feel or want is useless.

8. Your body is an asset.
And its disposition is as important as any other.

11. Fine - then your body is a liability.
But to reference your own post, if is is useless to worry about what what occurs when you can no longer feel or want, why take responsibility for future potentialitiesor the disposition of your assets or the care of your survivors in the case of your demise or disability?

15. Yes, but you won't be here to care what they feel or want.
Will you?

2. Personally, option #2...
though not for political reasons or to make any kind of stand. I could see some people going for option #1 and I wouldn't fault them for it. I don't think it reflects on "right to life" political statements as much as most people think. It's a personal preference.

10. It is all about what you want
I personally wouldn't chose #1. But if that is what you choice is, then this is what should happen. I have a living will, but I don't think that this is enough. Tomorrow I will tell my whole family in no uncertain terms what I would want done (although it might put a damper on the Easter festivities), and that I will pissed if they ignore my wishes. I will also have a health proxy power of attorney completed this week, just to be on the safe side. I sure as hell wouldn't want the circus that this has all become for Michael and Terri Schiavo. What a dreadful situation for all concerned.

6. It wouldn't matter
to me since I wouldn't be aware I existed. However, I have a living will and medical directives and power of attorney directives. I don't want my children (one of which is disabled) and surviving spouse to spend the family's money on something as fruitless as keeping my body alive.

12. There is no way possible I could ever be in a persistent vegetative state
for five years.

My advance directives specifically state that no feeding tube will be inserted under any circumstances regardless of the situation.

14. as soon as they see there is 'no hope of recovery,'
as they stated in the schiavo case, cut the freakin' cord, dammit!

i would not want to torture my family and friends, nor give the media and politicians any fuel for their firey agendas.
