Are Republicans in denial about Peak Oil?
I imagine most people are in denial about Peak Oil and what it means*, but I would think Republicans might be most in denial. Any thoughts?

*see this article for a good rundown:

10. 99%
That's how many Americans are avoiding "Peak Oil". In the coming months that will drastically change. Hard times are coming. Bob

3. Rank & file Republicans? Probably yes. Leadership? No, they just spin
to keep people quiet while they get their ducks in line to cash in on the crash and turbulent change to other sources of energy. You can bet they will come clean about the situation as soon as they have all the ownership of the alternative energy sources tied up for themselves.

There is a reason patents for cool alternatives have been consistently bought up then safely tucked away from actual development for decades. The ultra rich have no intention of letting any upstart enterprising capitalists actually cash in when the oil is gone. They will do it themselves when the shock hits.

4. Yes, it is hard to accept that this is what awaits us.
I am glad I don't have children. Can't imagine bringing a child into the world knowing this....

12. I agree
Things are just getting heated I think. We'll have a lot of struggels the next bit. I'm glad too I don't have kids and live at home. I don't have to worry about things like that. On the way home from eating out I saw one gas station and the highest gas price was $2.30! The lowest I've seen in the area was around $1.98 or so. I was watching Moore's "Roger & Me" from 1989 and I'm afraid of that happening all over cities in this country.

7. True, enough that Repubs are generally in denial.
But I was wondering if they were in more denial about Peak Oil because of the implications for the US invading Iraq. And of course Peak Oil is a significant reason why the administration would want to 9/11 occur.

8. I think they are.
I post on a conservative forum. By and large, most of them think the earths resources are limitless and anyone who contradicts them is an anti-capitalistic moron.

Don't push the issue them. No-one needs to preach that the sun is going to rise in the mornings, and the ramifications of Peak Oil will effect the conservative just as hard as the rest of us.

9. I think they accept the USGS prediction of peak oil in 2035
which I think it is safe to say is far too optimistic. I'm reading the new book by Kenneth Deffeyes, where he describes the logic behind his prediction that this year is the peak. He begins his book with a marvelous quote to the effect that the only people who believe in unlimited exponential growth are madmen and economists.

11. No
Republicans may be a lot of things, but their behaviour suggests that they take Peak Oil seriously. Thus, the need to take over Iraq, and maybe Iran, and subvert environmental regulations to drill in Alaska and off the California Coast. Divert all the world's petroleum resources our way. These steps are certainly counterproductive in the long run, but they don't care. In the short term, these steps will serve to prolong American dominance. That's all they care about.

So Peak Oil is a problem that they understand, but their response is not to try to actually solve it in any productive way for the benefit of the world, but rather just for ourselves.
