Disney bowing now to Christians, Dobson involved, Southern Baptists.
Edited on Sat Mar-26-05 07:56 PM by madfloridian
Apparently they are trying to downplay this after the Baptist boycotts of the 90s. It makes it clear the boycotts were not a financial burden. Someone posted here yesterday about a Disney boss and Faith Baptist Church. Wondering what is going on here. Sounds the Christian groups are in charge of Disney World now....but then maybe I have an over-active imagination.

http://www.theledger.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050326/NEWS/503260306/1021

SNIP..."In a marriage of modern mythmakers, the Walt Disney Co. is marketing a film based on C.S. Lewis' "The Chronicles of Narnia." And in doing so, Disney will take a page from Mel Gibson's "The Passion of the Christ."

"The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," based on Lewis' novel for children and Christian allegory, will be released Dec. 9.

The entertainment giant, which bills itself as a "Magic Kingdom," has carefully avoided religion for most of its history. Yet Disney has launched a 10-month campaign aimed at evangelical Christians to build support for "Narnia," a $100 million, live-action and computer-generated animated feature it is co-producing with Walden Media....."

SNIP.."One of the groups that led the boycott, Colorado-based Focus on the Family, has been included in the early stages of the marketing campaign." (James Dobson's group is Focus on the Family)

SNIP..."It won't be over "until the Southern Baptists, American Family Association, Concerned Women for America and others actually decide to call it off," says Bob Knight of Concerned Women for America."

Oops, I forgot my disclaimer. I am a Christian, a recovering Southern Baptist, and I not making fun of them.

1. This strikes me as going out on a limb
I mean there's a difference btween making a movie that's comfortable for Christians to go to, and promoting the controlling agenda of the Religious right. Anyway I liked the Chronicles of Narnia as a Kid.

2. Yes, there should be a difference. But this sounds promotional.
I don't care what kind of movies they produce, and I am not familiar with this one. I just don't like the tone the Baptists use, saying it will be over when we say it is over. Sounds like Disney is caving more than they need to do.

3. WHOA WHOAAAA.......
Hold the phone here. Disney is NOT pandering to those psychos. In fact when Eisner was interviewed on CNN years ago about the Opertaion Rescue brouhaha he flat out called then "nuts". Mr. President of Walt Disney World is ACTIVE in his church of Faith Baptist, but considerign whats IN the resort i doubt it! According to SOME sources 60% of the Entertainment Dept. is GAY and there HAVE been reports of Prince Eric and Aladdin making out backstage. Ditto on Gay Days. HUUUUUGE $$$$$$$$ flowing in. Now rivlaing holiday periods for crowds and $$$$. And then u have Epcot a SCIENCE based park ppl!! The UNIVERSE OF ENERGY explains the Earth was formed from the Big Bang, that dinos ARE our oil, and all hosted by ELLEN!!! THE LAND teaches out role w/ the Earth and teh Enviornment. And World Showcase?? Is there a more BLATANT statement of unilateralism and world peace ANYWHERE?? (granted this WAS made under the Card Walker era in the late 70s). Yes, France and Germany in a RED STATE! This whole thing w/ NARNIA i dont know WHAT to think. I do not agree AT AAAAAAAALLLLLLL. I mean it IS about money but i do NOT want thes sickos in the parks.

8. Everybody's Money Is Still Green
Corporations pander and will blatantly tell group one things are white and group two things are black since they know those two groups hate one another and will consider this pandering in their favor. Divide and conquer, then pick the pockets.

This is more lip service to a crowd that are some of the biggest hypocrites...if their antics this week demonstrates. Sure, Dobson will say "Boycott Disney" cause of gays or martians or whatever, and use it to raise all sorts of money and PR, but then his flock will still want to ride Space Mountain and hang with Mickey. Boycotts rarely work these days since our society is so self absorbed into their own pleasures that they'll leave the dirty work to others...especially when it means cutting out something fun.

FWIW, last November my family was planning to go to Disneyworld, but after the outcome of the election, we unanimously voted to spend "Blue" and changed the location from Florida to California and Disneyland...and had a great time in the process.

6. Is Dobson getting duped here?
If Disney wants to make the movie, fine. You don't want to see it, fine, don't go.

Making a movie Dobson likes makes no difference to most people. It really appears to be Disney getting something for "nothing".

9. Seems natural to go for the fundies, as Narnia *is* based on religious
themes.

They've seen how excited they can get when they think something is "for them", they've seen how successful "The Passion" was....the folks at Disney just want money same as everyone else.

of the "fun Factory" is fairly conservative. I guess George Mitchell is alright. http://corporate.disney.go.com/corporate/complete_history.html

Miramax (owned by Disney) produced Michael Moore's F911 and was supposed to distribute it however Disney refused to release the film in fear of retribution from Jeb. I am sure it's all about the huge tax breaks etc. I guess they have to make nice nice now! and keep the Bush family and it's rightwing group happy! Just another corporate giant pandering to the right so they can make lots of money.

Maybe MadFloridian doesn't know that in Florida we call it the Mouse Factory’ – or sometimes just ‘the Rat’ for many reasons. They don't treat their worker too well. There are constant labor disputes with the 6 unions Disney allows. There is a huge turnover rate, two-thirds of the workers at the park make $6.57 an hour or less. The company’s starting wage hasn’t changed in five years. The working conditions on board their cruise ships are appalling. If cruise workers try to form unions, they are threatened with dismissal. There are all kinds of problems with the merchandise produced by Disney providers oversees. etc. etc. etc. And I can go on and on!

12. Well, they say when you don't understand what others are saying....
then you have a problem. I must have a problem here, because I am not sure what people are saying. I simply feel these responses go over my head.

We have the Baptists say it is over when they say it is over, and Dobson involved...

They can go along with anyone with they want to go along with. It is not my business. They own the company, they can do what they want.

I live in the middle of some of the largest Southern Baptist churches in Florida...the guidance counselor at our school used Dobson's books for "training" the parents in my classroom who needed help with their kids. I live where there were signs pro-war given out by churches. I am tired, they are going overboard, and I can't tell if I am being agreed with or put down.

I don't care who they cater to, pander to, or whatever....I just wish people would post in plain English so I know if they are fer or agin.
