ABUSING POWER
But some members of his own party charge that the Republican governor already has abused his authority with his headlong charge into the case, carving a serious rift in the party he now heads. Legislators said Bush forced them to take sides on a delicate family issue that many of them would have preferred to leave to the courts.
''He was, and he is, abusing his power,'' said state Sen. Dennis Jones, a Republican from Seminole. ``It's a judicial issue, not a legislative issue, and certainly not an executive branch issue.''
And Bush's constant urging that legislators act on a new measure has frayed nerves in the state Capitol, particularly among the nine Republican senators who this week found themselves on mock ''Wanted'' posters for voting against Schiavo legislation.
One of the nine, Sen. Nancy Argenziano of Dunnellon, accused Bush of fomenting dissent.
'When you go outside and you tell people, `It's the fault of the Republicans who voted against it,' are you not inciting
?'' she said.
