Has anyone calculated how many millions of gallons of petroleum

will be saved if we brought back all the aircraft carriers, troops, tanks etc.home from Iraq and the entire Middle East? Carrying this one step further, how many more can be saved if we get rid of all the bases and the troops stationed throughout the world?

1. I'm guessing..

...2%-3% of domestic consumption, given how big the military is in relation to the nation as a whole, and that we all live -- civilian or military -- in a petroleum-consumption-driven society.

Any disproportionate consumption by the military in, say, tanks getting 1 mile per gallon would be offset by disproportionate 'conservation' from heating-cooling-living in barracks instead of individual houses, etc.

Not that America's defense posture is all that defensible, but I doubt excess consumption of petroleum is its biggest flaw.

Of course, YMMV.

2. I thought tank consumption was measured in gallon per mile instead of mile

per gallon.Also the sheer numbers of planes flying from offshore carrier platforms on support missions should guzzle enormous volumes of gas.
