All this..... yet no one says "Constitutional Crisis"
This hysteria in Florida has one purpose, and one purpose only.

When Congress reconvenes, Bush will be resubmitting his 10 stinkers of Court nominees and pushing their nuclear option to eliminate the possibility of filibuster.

Now they will have the story of the "activist, killer judges" fresh in their right flank's mind, and a collusive media to shout and endlessly pontificate about it.

This is the battle we must join now.

1. I am sure that is what Rove's main purpose was in getting this whole

situation into the headlines. He knew it was a no-win situation in the courts, but in the court of the media and his fundie base, and even in the minds of some of the moderates(as demonstrated by some of the posts here on DU)it was a no-lose situation.
The judiciary is now the BIG EVIL!! Killing judges will now be as "acceptable" to these nutjobs as killing abortion doctors was.
In both cases, people will be assassinated merely for doing their jobs. The end result will be that they will be intimidated into either not doing their jobs at all, or not doing them to the best of their ability.

So much for our Constitution.....

3. You guys give herr rover too much credit...
Edited on Sun Mar-27-05 03:41 PM by slor
though I am glad there are some that do not risk "misunderestimating" him, I really believe they thought this whole mess, would turn the other way. Many of the judges were rethugs, and the one judge that said it was ok for Congress to intervene, was actually a Clinton appointee ( I think it was on "Face the Nation", that I heard that). They fucked up in their overreach, to appeal to their rabid base, and it backfired. rove did NOT forsee this at all!

Edit: Personally, while I am happy they goofed, even I am quite surprised at the reaction of my fellow Americans too. I really did not expect the people to wake up, after everything else these bozos have done, over this.

2. True. We must oppose all 20 nominees.
They are racist, anti-woman, anti-worker, anti-environment and pro-corporate, for the most part.

That said, I take heart from the fact that even right-wing radical Republican judges can be unpredictable to those who appointed them. No doubt Bush thought a conservative judge would rule to put Shiavo's feeding tube back in, but not a single judge would do it. One conservative judge held fast to his position, although he got kicked out of his church for doing so.

6. I wish you guys would understand that the ONLY reason Rove
looks so good is because "our" side is so fucking LAME!

I won't bother anyone with the endless litany of Dem sellouts and failures that have littered our landscape since Ronnie Raygun got into office. It would be easier to list those things that went the proper way, if there were any.

We need Democrats who will stand up for the people (yes, even poor people) against the monied interests and the neocon lunacy. Name one with an office in D.C. that fits that description?

Rove, like Atwater before him, is operating in a vaccuum and we contribute to it by letting him intimidate us into fearing him.

The man is a rolypoly white boy who looks at politics the way a kid living in his mommy's basement looks at Star Trek. Like Senator Joe McCarthy, he only succeeds because no one dares challenge him face to face and head on.

Our only hope is Howard Dean.

7. Yes, that is the purpose of this
whole thing. They don't care at all about her it's about the judges. Call your Senators especially if they are on the fence about this issue. It is of utmost importance. Let them know that they must vote against the nuclear option, that you know what they are up to and don't want this. For over 200 yrs our courts have worked in bipartisan fashion and it needs to stay that way. Judges should be voted in with greater support than a simple majority of 50+ Cheney. This is about more than pro choice it's about civil rights, the environment, pirvacy rights, it's about our constitution.

10. I'm ignorant here. I know about the crisis concerning the
judges, but what exactly is the "nuclear option"? Does the legislature propose to introduce major changes to legislative procedure (I think?)

12. this is the 'rules change'
that will make a judicial appointee confirmable with 51% of the Senate(or 50% plus the president of the Senate i.e. the VP). Hence, no filibuster, which would require a much larger percentage to even bring the nomination to a vote.

As disastrous as that would be for us in regard to the make-up of the Court, it COULD be worse for the majority, which relies on frequent motions to "accept as read" massive bills, rather than reading them aloud on the Senate floor. And things that are routinely done "without objection" would be "objected to" at every turn.

A real friggen mess, no matter how you look at it.

9. Introducing the Constitution Restoration Act
Introducing the Constitution Restoration Act
Say Hello to Taliban America and GoodbyeTo Godless Judges, Courts and Law
By W. David Kubiak
March 24, 2005
Tired of waiting for the Second Coming to enforce Christ's rule on Earth? Fortunately, so is your Congress and they know how to "bring it on."

Just when you thought the corporatist/Christian Coalition had milked the 9/11 "surprise" for all it was worth in powers, profits and votes, we regret to report that you may have to think again. Just in case you've briefly fallen behind on your rightwing mailing lists, you might have missed the March 3rd filing of Senate bill S. 520 and House version is H.R. 1070, AKA the "Constitution Restoration Act" (CRA).

In the worshipful words of the Conservative Caucus, this historic legislation will "RESTORE OUR CONSTITUTION!", mainly by barring ANY federal court or judge from ever again reviewing "any matter to the extent that relief is sought against an entity of Federal, State, or local government, or against an officer or agent of Federal, State, or local government (whether or not acting in official or personal capacity), concerning that entity's, officer's, or agent's acknowledgment of God as the sovereign source of law, liberty, or government."
