these signs in my area, but when I visit family in PA and WV, egads, they make quite an appearance. One of my fave bumper stickers was "Evil Exists" (next to the American flag and "Support the Troops" ribbon, of course!).

Spunge is an obsolete but still correct spelling for any one of numerous species of Spongi (sponges).
I suspect this is a reference to the King James translation of the crucifixion, where they offer Jesus sour wine via a "spunge" on a pole. The archaic spelling is still used in many printings.
