Shelter from the Storm ('Mission NOT Accomplished' Day)
(rough, please do not forward, final will be ready tomorrow, thanks)

Shelter from the Storm
By William Rivers Pitt
t r u t h o u t | Perspective

Monday 28 March 2005

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hail,
Poisoned in the bushes and blown out on the trail,
Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the corn.
"Come in," she said, "I'll give you shelter from the storm."

- Bob Dylan

I attempted at the outset of the month to encapsulate the entire history of the Bush administration in one sentence. The frightening part isn’t how long the sentence turned out to be, or how damnably infuriating the content of the sentence turned out to be. The frightening part is the simple fact that the sentence is incomplete. The online satire magazine ‘The Onion’ ran an article a few weeks ago titled “Liberals Suffer Outrage Overload.” As with many Onion headlines, there was more truth than fiction in the words.

It’s the hypocrisy, stupid. It goes on and on and on, and it is exhausting in the extreme to consider, much less address and attack. Lately, the hypocrisy needle has been pegged over into the red. Leave it to the Republican majority to take an important issue, an issue filled with questions about medical ethics, the rights of the disabled people, the rights of spouses, the place of federalism in a national debate and the simple value of human life, and transmogrify it into a ghoulish circus sideshow best used to score political points and do a little fundraising on the side.

Yes, I am talking about Mrs. Schiavo, again. We just can’t seem to get away from this story, for in many ways, it encapsulates so much of what has gone so wrong in this country and with this government. Consider:

• The Republicans, party of states rights, have bulldozed Florida law and the basic underpinnings of Federalism to take a hand in this matter. Florida law allows a spouse to stand surrogate when medical decisions of life and death are required, but since sticking to their states-rights guns would not give the conservatives the outcome they desire, they betrayed a central ethic of their political philosophy without batting an eye;

• The Republicans, party of the sanctity of marriage, have taken over the role of husband in the process of knocking over their Federalist principles. Gay people getting married is a horrid affront to the sanctity of marriage, but the United States Congress finds no problem elbowing itself into the kitchen-table decisions made between a husband and a wife;

• The Republicans, party of moral values, are enjoying an incredible fundraising opportunity in flogging the Schiavo story. One cannot swing one’s cat by the tail without striking a plea for financial assistance from the far-right Republican-allied groups that have turned one family’s plight into a river of cash;

• Republicans, party of the ‘Culture of Life,’ have not one word to say about Sun Hudson. Hudson was a five-month-old baby born in Texas with a genetic disorder that required him to be sustained on machines. Thanks to a law signed by then-Governor Bush in 1999, Texas hospitals are allowed to remove patients from machines if they deem there is no hope, and if the patient’s family cannot afford to sustain care. Sun Hudson was removed from his machines two weeks ago, over the thunderous outrage of his mother, and he died. Congressional Republicans were nowhere to be found when the life left his little body;

• Republicans, party of Tom DeLay, have not one word to say about DeLay’s staggering double-standard in this matter. In 1988, DeLay’s father was injured in an accident and left in a condition quite similar to that of Mrs. Schiavo. DeLay sat in private counsel with his family, heard the verdict of the doctors that his father would never recover, considered the stated wishes of his father that he did not want to be left to live sustained by machines should such a thing come to pass, and decided to let the man pass. Had a mob of self-righteous Congressional Democrats tried to batter their way into the decision-making process of the DeLay family in 1988, Tom would have likely attacked them with his bug-extermination equipment, and he would have been fully justified in doing so.

Etc.

Ball all of that up with the fact that these are the same cretins whose respect for life in all forms does not extend to the 200,000 or so human beings, a number that includes 1,528 American soldiers, whose lives have been snuffed out in this illegal Iraq war. Add to the pile the tens of thousands of arms, legs, faces and hopes that have been blasted away in this thing, and you are left contemplating the Humvee-sized hole that sits in the center of any ‘Culture of Life’ argument they would dare put forth.

Every aspect of this Schiavo matter – the hypocrisy and doublespeak, the forgetfulness of casualties that do not help in a political argument, the betrayal of long-standing rhetorical ethics, the rank profiteering, the avoidance of discussion that is in any way meaningful – can be similarly found in the manner in which these people have conducted themselves in this invasion and occupation.

On most days, I would use this laundry list of wretchedness as a rallying cry. Take to the streets, I would say, make your voices heard, scream and shout, get on your feet and do something. This time, however, a different approach seems appropriate. Keeping track of all this stuff, listing the innumerable ways we have been betrayed singularly and en masse, finding ways to put a stop to it, can take a grievous toll.

The time has come, perhaps, to do something else. Put your feet up, take a seat, play some soothing music, smoke ‘em if you got ‘em, and then take a ride to visit a soldier. You’ve earned it, they’ve earned it, and besides, there is a perfect day for it coming up on the calendar.

Two years ago, on the 2nd of May 2003, George W. Bush donned a flight outfit and landed dramatically on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. He stood before the assembled personnel, quoted Scripture, and declared the war in Iraq to be all but over beneath a banner that proclaimed MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

The anniversary of that day is right around the corner, and a group called ‘Mission NOT Accomplished’ is organizing an appropriate way to mark the occasion. Their mission statement reads in part:

On May 2, 2005, We the People have a plan to remember that day, and to keep remembering it until we bring home our troops and begin to repair our damaged relationship with the rest of the world. So great is the magnitude of such an undertaking that many Americans have given in to despair, and many say that it is not possible to rouse the American public to needed action to take back our country. This day will mark a sabbatical from jobs, shopping, television programming , answering e-mail and surfing the Internet. No Walmart shopping, no eating at McDonalds, in fact, no shopping at all, except for absolute necessities.

While we are relaxing and remembering the significance of this day, we are not participating in supporting the corporate structure which feeds the regime currently occupying the White House. We will use this day to visit Veterans' Hospitals, take flowers, gifts, carrot cake, poetry to the people who have given their health and future wellbeing, in many cases, to what they believed was a good cause but turned out to be a lie. Even those who do not see it that way deserve our compassion, our love, and our practical assistance.

It’s a good a day as any to take some shelter from the storm. Make use of it.

saying!

Watching people react to the idea when it was proposed at DU was a cheering experience. As the thread unfolds, you can feel the positivity of the response, both in encouragement and in more direct participation like beautiful graphics. Unlike some of what has been happening around here recently, this brought out the best in people and banished bitter negativity. The thread is here:

As for outrage at the neocons, check out what Rep. John Conyers says in the March 25 installment of his blog, which is currently at the top of the page here:

Bush's Popularity Falling Like a Rock

I have now updated this entry based on your comments, and plan to turn into editorial and submit

Will check for further comments and suggestions later today

Polls now show that President Bush has hit his lowest popularity of his presidency -- a 43% approval rate. Some assert that this is merely a short term effect of the GOP's highly unpopular intervention in the Schiavo matter. I believe that while that is a contributing cause, the overall decline is the result of long term, and likely irreversible trends.

The significance of improper intervention in the Schiavo case goes beyond the narrow facts of the case and concerns about federalism and separation of powers (as important as they are). With Schiavo, the entire nation was exposed to the win at all costs mentality of the Repubican Party, and the fact that their deeds do not match their rhetoric:

-- You can't talk about being pro-life, when you're decimating Medicaid, when you are preventing life-saving stem cell research, when you allow guns to flow freely to terrorists, when you practically ignore the tragic school shooting in Minnesota, when your abortion laws actually threaten women's health and lives, and when more than 1,500 American soldiers and more than 100,000 innocent civilians have died in Iraq as a result of a misguided war.

-- You can't say you're pro-democracy when you ignore not only repressive regimes abroad, but tolerate and encourage torture, and disparage voting rights in our own nation.

-- You can't talk about saving Social Security, when your privatization plan would bankrupt the program.

-- You can't say you're pro-family, when your bankruptcy bill would put credit card companies ahead of families, and your labor policy harms working families by denying overtime and any increase in the minimum wage.

(snip - much more at the link, and he's asking for still more input)

edited to add what Conyers says in a postscript added today:

JC Responds -- OK, as of 9:30 AM Eastern Time on Sunday, I have reviewed the 25 comments, and updated and reedited my blog based on the input of you my readers. Thank you so much for your comments. They are truly gratifying.

In terms of changing the entry, I have of course fixed the grammar (#6). I have added that more than 100,000 innocent civilians have died in Iraq (#1). I have added the point regarding the manufactured news, and improperly inserting relilgion into politics. I have beefed up the EPA point (#24). And I have added Dr. Levinson's very eloquent language (#12). I have added the Minnesota gun hypocrisy (#23).

In terms of other comments, I would note as follows. Yes it is ok to forward this blog to to others, and I would encourage you to do so (#1). Hiring a PR firm is a good idea (#2), I will attempt to raise with Dr. Dean at DNC. I agree we need more Member blogs, and I will raise with my colleagues (but we're on recess now) (#3). We do need more moments of confrontation over principle (#5). I will continue to share ideas about responding to the Ohio election debacle with Rep. Tubbs Jones and Sherrod Brown, I am good friends with both of them (#10). We do need to get these outrages into the mainstream media -- I work on this every day (#18). I have looked at Raw Story's "Paper Chase" proposal and agree it is a good idea and plan to do it myself and encourage my readers to do #25). I apoloigize if I have missed any comments or failed to comment on any of them -- They were also very helpful.

I now propose taking the updated version, aided and abetted by your comments, and submitting as an editorial. I will check this entry later today to see if you have any further comments or suggestions.

17. Thanks for info re Conyers blog
Hi.

I adore John Conyers. When I am feeling hopeless about the Congress, I try to remember that he, and Maxine Waters, and many others in the Black Caucus stood up, alone, for us in the 2000 "election" debacle, and continue to do so.

Mr. Conyers reeks of intelligence and integrity. I'm going to go over and take a look at his blog.

18. Hello again, puebloknot. John Conyers is a major hero of mine, too.
...and I told him so.

I can tell you that it is thrilling when he responds to something you've written to him. I'm afraid that as his blog becomes more widely known it will be flooded with too many emails for him to respond to personally as he painstakingly does - lovably authentic typos and all -- right now. I also fear he's going to encounter one of the persistent plagues of progressive blogs - malicious posts by freepers and trolls.

But for now, it is pure joy to have this kind of immediacy in the communication. It truly makes it feel more possible to win the battle to heal this country.

The first time I wrote to him, when he was announcing the restarting of his blog, he replied to the half dozen or so comments - including mine - that had been posted up to that time. (The second time, today, he responded directly to a suggestion I made - and I'm still not coming down to earth!) Here is what I wrote that first time and his reply:

Rep. Conyers, I know that your primary duty is to represent your own constituency in Michigan, but I want to tell you how inspiring and heartening it has been to have you and your colleagues stand for ALL of us, all across the country. (I am in Massachusetts.) You stand for hope and the restoration of law and democracy to this country.

Your welcome introduction of this blog is the subject of a new thread in the Democratic Underground political discussion forum here:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x1675727
In case you did not already realize it, the Democratic Underground Home Page and Greatest pages are perhaps the best places in the progressive internet to get the very latest news. The Democratic Underground site is also an excellent place to ask for help in digging for documentation of obscure but important facts.

I hope you're not too discomfitted at being seen as a hero by so many people, sir. I'm afraid you're just going to have to live with that.

"Thank you" doesn't begin to express the gratitude I feel for what you and your courageous colleagues have done and are continuing to do. You're not only a leader in the fight for justice, you are showing HOW to fight for justice and infusing hope that it is still possible to win.

And here is his reply:

I am truly gratified to receive all of your comments and reaction to my new interactive web site. As I am sure you realize, being being on the losing side of so many votes so often in Congress can be discouraging, but I gain much comfort from comments like these. It is the essence of democracy and pluralism to interact directly with you as this new and improved blog will allow me to do. Keep submitting comments and letting me know what you think. I welcome your ideas and thoughts.

20. From what Will Pitt wrote, he's not finished with a final draft about
the May 2 celebration/remembrance/healing day yet. I haven't said anything to Conyers because I would think that Will Pitt, understandinglife and you would be the best ones to communicate exactly what you want to say to him. I don't feel that I can do as good a job as you guys - including Will can. Once an "official" article on the day is written, I'll be happy to participate in forwarding it to as many blogs and other places as I can think of. I'm hoping that a LOT of people do.

Will's article on the date should also be an excellent candidate for dissemination via The Paper Chase Project ( http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x3353926)

And they should be sure to include the beautiful graphics!

9. The very next day, the Old Man lost face
One of my old posts, resurrected on this Easter Sunday -- because its the truth.

The Old Man of the Mountain loses face

May 3, 2003 -- high up on the flank of Cannon Mountain in Franconia Notch, NH -- the Old Man of the Mountain lost his face - literally - the day after G.W. Bush pulled his public relations stunt on the aircraft carrier Abe Lincoln ("Mission Accomplished") off the coast of San Diego, CA.

I was struck by the sequence of events. Bush prances on Abe Lincoln deck, the noble Old Man loses face immediately thereafter on the far side of the continent. What's that all about?

Bush Prances Carrier Deck in Flight Suit - May 2, 2003
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/2993415.stm

Old Man story - May 3, 2003:
http://gonewengland.about.com/cs/nhhistory/l/bloldmanofmtn.htm

For NH -- and for all who had ever seen him -- the collapse of the granite face was a First Class tragedy -- for the Old Man was a symbol of honesty, dignity, and honor -- and he seemed eternal.

I always thought of the Old Man's profile as embodying the same qualities as Old "Honest Abe" Lincoln, whose profile is so familiar to us from the penny. So I was deeply saddened to see him "lose face," and could not help but note that it came right after Bush pulled his PR stunt on the deck of our nation's Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier.

After presenting false reasons for war to America, to our soldiers and to the world, what right did Bush, who has a shameful military service record himself, have to celebrate himself and "Declare Victory"? Hundreds of our soldiers have died and been wounded since that day, not to mention the ongoing misery for their families at home and the families in Iraq.

(end)

The right seems to have taken to calling her "disabled" so they can say this is all about the rights of the disabled and they can trot out disabled people to say "don't kill me!" (Like Joni Erickson on Larry King the other night)

14. The success of MNA depends entirely on each person's .....
....willingness to participate and to spread the word.

It will be successful, and enduring, if folk just do both -- participate and spread the word. Organizational complexity is not required, either for what happens on May 2, 2005, or thereafter.

After May 2, 2005 we will all watch the response of those whom we are telling to stop the illegal war in Iraq and begin, with the help of the UN and all Nations, to repair the colossal damage done to the people of Iraq and their civilization.

As those days pass after May 2, 2005, if the 5-2-5 knot icon appears in an email or via other messaging media, the vast network of those supporting MNA will know what to do, the following day.

Peace.
