There is a con man's technique that politicians sometimes use to manipulate the public and never has it worked better than with Terri Schiavo.
The scheme involves making a very big deal about the plight of a single person to get us to ignore the plight of hundreds, thousands or even millions of others.
Two-bit hustlers use distraction and diversion techniques to lift your wallet or empty your bank account. Political flimflammers use the tragedy of a single family to distract you from the horror they are inflicting upon your friends and neighbors.
I have frigging had it with Terri Schiavo. My sister, my mom, and I had to make that decision about my Dad - without Santorum and without Specter and without Scalia or Rhenquist.
I have even had it more. In foreign countries, foreign researchers have shown that therapies derived from
stem cell research can aid in the management of Type II Diabetes. I have Type II Diabetes. But American researchers can't do that research here.
And Congressman Dave Weldon (who claims to be a physician - AFLAC AFLAC) and Senator Tom Coburn (who also claims to be a physician - AFLAC AFLAC) are trying to make it a
FELONY for me to seek that treatment overseas.
