New GOVERNMENT website suggests parents of gays seek therapy
YOUR tax dollars are helping to pay for a website that calls being gay a "lifestyle" and to consider visiting with a thrapist who "shares your values" in case your kid announces he has adopted this "lifestyle".

====

WASHINGTON - An array of advocacy groups are calling on the federal government to take down one of its new Web sites, saying it presents biased and inaccurate advice to parents on how to talk to their children about sex.

The site — 4parents.gov — stresses the promotion of abstinence. Emphasizing abstinence is fine, said the groups, but the government also should stress the need for contraception if sexual relations do occur....

The Human Rights Campaign said it was particularly concerned about sections of the Web site that focus on sexual orientation. The group works for equal rights for gays, lesbians and bisexuals. The site says: "If you believe your adolescent may be gay, or is experiencing difficulties with gender identity or sexual orientation issues, consider seeing a family therapist who shares your values to clarify and work through these issues."

Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, said in a separate letter to Leavitt, that describing sexual orientation as an "alternative lifestyle" is outdated and inaccurate language that can alienate youth at a time when they are particularly vulnerable. "By terming sexual orientation a 'lifestyle,' HHS is discussing it as a matter of choice, which is contrary to the vast majority of scientific evidence. Sexual orientation is not a lifestyle," Solmonese said.

We all have to MAIL THE ACLU and get a suit filed immediately: aclu.org.

We're already funding the staged Republican rallies to promote the looting of Social Security. On top of funding the destruction of what was left of Iraq. Now we're supposed to fund the active ruination of our own lives? Our kids? Our neighbors?

Someone tell me there is a plan to deal with these criminals. :nuke:

2. I'm a SHINING example of what that approach does to people
Anyone who has read some of my posts regarding "values" and homosexuality and what therapists in my area are like, knows what I mean too. That bullshit oughta be considered a form of assault.

9. I just read the whole site & they've scrubbed it.
There is no mention of homosexuality anywhere that I can find.

But, the damn thing still promotes abstinence over birth control and no one but the BushCO morans believes that works.

10. This is it folks. This is what the religious right get for working their
butts off for Bush. They get a website that insults gay people and their families. No marriage amendment.. So far all the petty, cheap stop-gap measures have worked. The TS ass kiss is part of the same crap. As long as they can

1) keep from following up on and solving the issues of gay marriage and abortion so that they can keep those all important wedges for the nest few elections..

2) and as long as they can keep the religious right from figuring out they are chumps by blowing wet kisses (like this website) at them..

They have their coalition.

11. whoooaaaa....that is seriously fucked up
I wonder if those "rehab Gay" fundie camps are receiving federal funds and this is all a grand scheme.

This is getting really weird. Our tax dollars should NOT be spent on spreading bigotry and hate, thus violence toward Gays.

WTF?

12. I...I have NO WORDS. Except maybe
my humble opinion that the sad, closeted Republicans who come up with these sick ideas to cover up their gay "lifestyles" en mass should take a deep breath, suck it up, and accept themselves. These are the kind of things people feel shitty about on their death-beds...and then go to hell for. Shitheads.

17. will come?!?
Darling, they are already at our doorsteps! The war on gays is JUST getting fired up! We need some strong, gay leaders to emerge, but they are so busy fighting with each other, that the rest of us are left out in the cold to fend for ourselves. The one thing that has made me the happiest is the number of straight allies I have found at DU. I know that there are non-gays who will fight along side us and that makes it a little more bearable!

18. It's kinda good advise
"If you believe your adolescent may be gay, or is experiencing difficulties with gender identity or sexual orientation issues, consider seeing a family therapist"

That part doesn't sound like a bad idea. Might prevent a few less Allen Keyes.

19. These "ask the expert" questions are moronic
I don't want my children to be sexually active until they're married, but is this realistic?

What is a sexually transmitted disease (STD)?

What if a person just has sex with one person? Is there still a risk of being infected with a sexually transmitted disease (STD)?

These are for people who have been living in caves since 1965.

AUGH!!!!!

The information on this site is making me ANGRY!!!!!

If you find out your son or daughter has already had sex, it's important for you to take them to a health care professional to be screened for pregnancy and/or sexually transmitted diseases. Be sure to tell your teen that having multiple partners in their lifetime can be one of the biggest threats to their physical and emotional health. Tell them it's not too late to stop having sex, that it's never too late to make healthy choices. They are worth it!

Delaying sex is a healthy choice for all teens. Even if teens never marry, the values created through abstinence such as respect, responsibility and self-control will benefit their future relationships.

Like, seriously, WTF?

Did anyone else see that study that said that 99% of teens who hadn't taken an abstinence pledge had premarital sex, compared with 88% of teens who had taken a pledge?

Like, honestly, premarital sex is the rule, not the exception.
