1. That's consistent with rawstory.com suggesting the end has come

2. As a Catholic, I certainly do NOT want to wish death on the man,
but, the silver lining here is that, maybe, the very private Terri Schiavo and her husband might FINALLY get some relief from the relentless pursuit of coverage if the Pontiff dies.

5. But NBC expert says it seems he is dying from massive organ
failure. The supposition being that organ failure following toxic shock has entered into a "cascade" that predictably will end in death

9. It seems a matter of hours not days.
I'm not a catholic but I am aware of JPII's decline. A lesson to us all on the ultimate fate of the living.

8. Exactly how my father died, it took only hours.

This is the way it goes, for most; at least, for most who are lucky enough to die in old age, when the final illness hits, the organs go.

6. I have a friend at AP who says he died a short time ago

Seeking independant confirmation. Someone obviously jumped the gun.

Edited to delete my own "gun jumping".

11. For those who've not seen the death of a Pope before ...
... 24x7 media coverage is normal, even when there were only 3 networks. They'll cover it endlessly until the new Pope speaks from the balcony... and then we'll have many talking heads engaging in prognostication (tea leaves) about how the new Pope will effect Church policies.

12. It truly is sad
The pope and the Catholic Church was wrong on a lot of things, particularly birth control, and his tacit approval of church misconduct. But John Paul II has always been consistent in his beliefs on the sanctity of life. I have to respect him for that. I hear a lot of people saying that he was a conservative. I don't necessarily think that is true. I think that any Pope by our standards is going to be seen as a conservative. In terms of the church, I don't think he was.

His life truly is fascinating, and I hope that the next pope will continue to preach social justice.

13.  You can pretty much bet on the pope passing...
by the end of today. Judging by the news, it appears that he doesn't have much time left. May he soon be at peace.
