I wonder if the pope has already passed away
The catholic church is certainly gaining much attentio with this papal passing. Eh. maybe that is too much conspiracy theory. :)

7. He could have passed, but not officially confirmed yet
There are rituals required to make it official, so he could be physically dead but not officially dead.

9. protocol
Among the aides received today were Cardinal Camillo Ruini, who as the pontiff’s vicar for Rome would publicly announce the death of a pope; Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, the dean of the College of Cardinals who would inform cardinals, ambassadors and heads of states upon the death of a pope; and Archbishop Paolo Sardi, the Vatican vice chamberlain, who runs the Holy See between the death of a pope and the election of a new one.

4. It is very possible
that he is already gone. The Vatican is not known for being forthright with information. On the other hand, must the world know the instant the man passes? I'm more of a news junkie than most, but these deathwatches are getting to me.

5. Ruini, the vicar of Rome makes the announcement, but he's on TV...
celebrating mass.

Maybe they've changed the protocol.

6. listen to what Ruini said...
Very curious double meaning... he described the Pope at this moment as being united with Christ's suffering.

This could simply be an analogy of John Paul's suffering with Christ... or perhaps... just perhaps... "united with Christ" could be a subtle hint that he indeed has passed away.

8. Maybe they're waiting until after the mass to announce it?
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 12:38 PM by spunky
Or maybe the CNN press room is buzzing about his death because they just can't wait for it to happen. Afterall, they are in death mode right now. I bet they've had stories done for weeks to start airing the nanosecond they announce his death.

11. They've had prepared stories for years.
They prepare obituary stories literally years in advance--the most famous example being for the Queen Mum, where the BBC had special blacks suits and prepared retrospectives stored for nearly three decades.

12. Ruini (Vicar of Rome) announces the death of the pope * he's...
presiding over the mass right now.

Actually, I'm predicting sunset, Rome time...

Which is soon.
