A man named Karol.
However you may feel about the Catholic Church and the Vatican, I am sure that you all agree that no person deserves what he has gone through in the past years. I noticed that all of the channels are showing footage of him in the later years, which is sad, because he was once a young, vibrant, and dare I say, very handsome man.

1. no person deserves ......................its called life
it is what you do with what you are given. and i think he did very well with what he was given. now it is time for him to be at peace.

deserve? who says life is fair. anymore fair than a baby born with a horrible disease only to die. life

2. thank you for the beautiful photos
but, I disagree with your conclusions. each stage of life has its own dignity; he has been an example in facing this last one in peace.

23. I cried too
I watched BBC World's coverage of the Pope until they had technical difficulties with the sound.

Then I flipped over to MSNBC and Keith Olberman's coverage with Carl Bernstein. Bernstein's description of the Pope's influence in world affairs, especially regarding the dismantling of the former Soviet Union, his use of the term "lumpen capitalism" (yes!), and his work on behalf of third world countries.. well , that did it. I couldn't help but cry a bit for someone who spoke out for the under classes and the downtrodden.

I just wish the college of cardinals would elect a pope who would bring the USA down to size. It needs it.

Sue

38. Remember when we were all so young
I was coming of age shortly after he was named Pope (8 in 1978).
I don't think he's dead, yet, btw. Somehow it seems like I'd know, but I don't know why.
In any case, my hair smells like incense and candles - my house looks like a church... oh, and I don't think my rosary's been rubbed so hard since November. :)

8. No man should have to endure what he has...
Least of all, this:

:) It's proabably not appropriate, but it made me smile on a day when many tears are being shed. This man was not a friend of those who control our government. Please remember this; no matter what your opinion of him.

12. I liked all the pictures . Especially the one with him shaving :)
He looked very content and jolly in that picture , sitting down in the woods , in nature , shaving lol :)

The picture of him with Clinton is a nice one as well . But the picture of him with Bush - he is showing a feeling that we all feel .

I'm a Christian, but not a Catholic, and I disagreed with some Papal policy, but I acknowledge an extraordinary person and a remarkable life of service, devotion and duty, lived on a global level, touching millions.

It was taken in the late 1980's, he's climbing a mountain with a staff. Neat picture.

18. Absolutely wonderful! I love the picture of the Pope and Mother Teresa
together. The mutual respect each of them have for the other comes through so clearly. To the very end, the Pope represented all that is good in human life. May he rest in peace.

19. "sad"???
"....all of the channels are showing footage of him in the later years, which is sad, because he was once a young, vibrant, and dare I say, very handsome man."

What is so wrong with being an elder?

It it is "sad" when you are not "young" and "handsome"?

I see nothing sad or unattractive about being of senior years.

21. Thank you for those amazing photos...
...and I'm blown over by the first image.

Is it irreverent to say that he was really handsome? Wow!

I remember him mostly, as the way he looked in the photo with Mother Teresa.

It was very interesting to see a young, attractive photo of him. He's such a larger-than-life figure--you forget that he was once a child, or a young man.

So thanks...

28. I think this is the mountain one......

John Paul climbs to a 1,950-meter-high mountain hut on July 10, 1987. The Pontiff is on a week-long, full-scale vacation in the Dolomite Alps about 150 kilometers north of Venice..

30. Till the day I die, I'll never forget
the day he landed at the airport in Poland, his first trip home after being named Pope. It was incredible drama and many were wondering if he would himself, lead the final down fall of the communist government there. The entire world was watching.

He walked down the stairs of the plane knelt down on to the tarmac and kissed the ground. Walked over to the podium mike and stated,

'Any nation that tries to remove the word of God from its affairs is doomed to fail'(as near as I can remember his words). The crowds went wild.

Three days later (they waited for the Pope to leave out of respect for the Popes wishes) Lech Wallesa lead the nation wide strike that brought the Polish government down. They need to replay that on CNN.

37. What a moving tribute to a holy man
Thank you.

May he be received with joy into the kingdom of the Lord.

He is a man with the courage to deny a superpower when he felt that it was pursuing policies destructive to God's will; not once, but twice.

Go with God, Holy Father.
