Question for Catholics here, re: Papal Audience.
I've always wondered why women wear black when having an audience with the Pope. I saw that picture on another thread of Princess Diana with Pope John Paul. But I've also seen pictures of Jacqueline Kennedy with a former Pontiff, and she was wearing black also.

Guess it doesn't matter if one is Catholic or Protestant. Anyone know?

1. I'd think navy blue or dark grey would also be acceptable
dull colors signifying respect.

I can't see anybody but maybe the First Daughters wearing red sundresses or jeans to one, can you?

3. But Warpy, I've never seen any woman meeting with the pope wearing
anything but black. Not navy etc. And with their head covered, although I guess I can understand that. I don't know if catholic women are expected to cover their heads in church these days. In the Episcopal church it doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

6. Head coverings haven't been required in church since Vatican II...
....during John XXIII's papacy.

2. Dark or subdued colors are prescribed by etiquette for the Papal Audience.
Doesn't matter who you are.

4. That's what happens when you have people running things
with delusions they are living in another century. One of the things we forget is how unusual it was for John Paul to travel outside the Vatican. I don't know about John XXIII and I remember that Paul VI came to NYC, but before them the popes styled themselves as prisoners of the Vatican. They were still ticked off that a united Italy had taken over the Papal states.

5. Don't know.
This is the closest I got. I am one of the dots in the foreground of the first pix (light pants).

This one is a favorite from Rome, just outside the Vatican. Nothing to do with the Pope or your post, but I like it.

7. Nice pictures. I got stopped entering the Vatican because my
arms were bare. It was about 100 degrees in Rome and I had to put on my sweater. Yuck.
