Pope opposed Iraq war and death penalty unlike flotsam Repukes Bush -Delay
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 08:03 PM by Proud2BAmurkin
I think the other issues the Pope was wrong on probably came from being misguided but well meaning, not evil and mean spirited (unlike the Repukes). At least he was consistent on pro life, poverty and war.

1. To what degree?
Did he threaten to excommunicate pro-war politicians? Did he urge US Catholics to vote for only anti-war candidates? They do that daily on the abortion issue.

And the church's stance on the Death Penalty has not changed under his papacy, and the DP is NOT forbidden by Catholic policy.

3. He spoke out against Tim McVeigh execution and if I remember right
there was some directive handed down around the election that said people could vote for pro choice candidates if they thought the issue was balanced with other pro life positions like anti DP and anti war.

5. I spoke out agains the McVeigh execution and the war, too
Speaking out is easy. The pope has enormous power and influence. He did not use it to stop the war.

8. The Pope never threatened to excommunicate pro-choice candidates.
In case you haven't noticed, the Church leadership in the US goes out on its own when it wants to.

10. Correct
the Pope did not. It was the US bishops. Do you think they do so against the wishes of the Pope? Do you think the Pope COULD have threatened to excommunicate American politicians who supported the war?

2. The Pope called the invasion an unjust war...
officially.

4. I disagree with the birth control and early abortion
but the Pope was, as you say, consistent. Spoke out against our illegal war and for fighting poverty in the world.

I bet you he hated GW Bush.

7. you cannot disentangle poverty...
from the second-class status of women and their ability to control their fertility...neither of which the Pope did anything to help with

9. I didn't agree with much but he did speak out loud and clear
despite some of his more conservative ideals I think this Pope has been a very positve force for peace
