Who will mourn the passing of the Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth?
Huh, tell me, WHO? More importantly, outside his congregation, who will even know when he passes? The only holy person our American media seems to believe exists is the Pope. News flash! There are others who are just as beloved, just as righteous, and just as worthy of our mourning their passing.

Here's some information about the Chief Rabbi. May he live long and well.

I feel a little left out of the fun!

We also lack buildings and graven images!

4. How many people does the Chief Rabbi of the Commonwealth represent?
The pope represents a billion people. This isn't just a media fest.

24. I could say something about the reason there are so
few Jews in the world now, thus fewer consituents for the Chief Rabbi, but I will choose to remain silent on that at the moment.

The thing is that the death of anyone who promotes peace and tolerance is a loss in a world that is increasingly intolerant. Should the Chief Rabbi of the British Commonwealth pass (G-d forbid) I am sure it will be little noticed by the US media.

If media notice is contingent upon the size of one's constituency then I assume all on DU will agree that the positive press Bush gets is all good then since 3 million more Americans allegedly voted for him in November than voted for Kerry.

5. The pope has no peer on the international stage
The pope's death will affect the spiritual lives of millions of Catholics worldwide. I do think that the media is going overboard with this death watch and constant programming when there really hasn't been any new news for hours, but I can see the motive behind it. The Chief Rabbi, whom I also wish will live long and well, I'm sure will be mourned by many Jewish people in England when he passes. But it's not a fair comparision, IMHO ... and I say that as a person who considers herself a Jew.

8. My point is that there are many good people around the globe.
The logic of making the number of faithful followers of a holy person the criterion for attention to his/her death is negated by the level of mass hysteria focused on Terry Schiavo's drama. She's been transformed into a Jesus like figure by the American media and our lunatic fringe. Yet I don't think she had a following of millions.

11. OH, okay
With all the news of the pope's imminent passing, I thought you were talking about him. I absolutely agree with you on Ms. Schiavo. That was truly a saddening and disgusting display put on by the media.

12. Well, I'm just talking about the media's choices of whose life & death
they're going to obsess about.

13. He is a world leader
there are a billion Catholics in the world. It is kind of a big deal to us. Much more so than Ms. Schiavo or any other private citizen (whose deaths should remain private).

Having said that, I really don't need to know about his bathroom habits at end of life.

14. The British Commonwealth encompasses a vast amount of territory also.
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 09:00 PM by MyPetRock
Australia and Canada are still part of the Commonwealth as far as I know. There may be other areas too. While I can't project what our media will do when he dies, hopefully many decades from now, I would guess he'll get close to zero attention. When one compares this to the TS 24/7 obsession, it's appalling.

I can do that not being Jewish!

15. I'm Jewish and am saddened by the imminent death (if it already
hasn't happened) of the Pope. I respect him a lot for trying to make peace with the Jews regarding the Holocaust, for example.

17. I'll mourn him, although he's pissed me off in the past.
For instance, by refering to Reform Jews as 'those who are trying to destroy the faith.' Like the Pope, I believe him to be a good man with some bad views. But to address the point of your post, as others have already pointed out Dr Sacks simply represents far, far fewer people than the Pope.

I'm not Jewish, so I haven't joined that group. My husband is Jewish so maybe that gives me some credibility though!

22. He's still very much alive!
But the point is that you "don't know (of) him". Nobody does, yet he has a vast Jewish following. When he and other holy leaders face ill health and/or die, our media marginalizes their lives and deaths. Instead they obsess about not just the Pope's health, but that of movie stars and mass hysteria triggers like TS.

25. I'm sure he's a very good man.
Someone posted here that he has been against the Jewish reform movement, which I don't like. But there's negatives and positives to all holy leaders.
