DU has a Religion and Theology Forum
Edited on Fri Apr-01-05 11:51 PM by Disturbed
It would be real nice if people posted the Pope and religous stuff there.

1. OK. It would also be nice
if you removed the "Hitler exiting the Church" graphic from your posts. It is offensive and misleading(there were a lot of Catholics who were passionately anti-Nazi, including the future Pope John XXIII, who personally helped many Jews escape the Holocaust.)

On a day when the Pope is at death's door(and I'm not even Catholic myself)using that image is really insensitive.

8. The rise of Hitler was largely the work of German capitalists
half of who were Lutheran, rather than the Catholic Church.

Some of the young Germans in the White Rose resistance were Catholics, I believe.

Fight the real enemy-capitalism and greed.

16. What about Mussolini's backers were they "Lutheran" also?
What young Germans Catholics have to do with a collaborationist Nazi
church hierarchy is beyond me and lots of them supported Hitler for the
exact reason of opposing godless communism.

Which was the enemy of capitalism and greed at that time.

41. Yes, some of Mussolini's backers were Catholic
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 01:54 AM by Ken Burch
...And many others were also, at heart, some type of pagan.

I don't claim that there was no Catholic involvement with fascism, but both Hitler and Mussolini ended up suppressing the Church in their empires, and the future John Paul II nearly ended up in Auschwitz.

It's not so simple as "Catholic=Fascist, non-Catholic=AntiFascist."

There were plenty of Americans in the Thirties, for example, who were rabidly pro-fascist and rabidly anti-Catholic.

And your "godless Communists" ended up selling out to Hitler by signing the Molotov-Von Ribbentrop pact of 1939, and helped the fascist cause as well by sabotaging the anti-fascist fight in Spain.

So don't be so smug.

47. Agreed and they are not my "godless Communists" ...
sorry. I was not referring to Stalin but to Germans communists
opposing Hitler's rise.

There is a powerful Catholic fascist movement now
called Opus Dei or so I have read.

Scalia is supposedly a member and they have been gain
power in recent years.

Oh well someone once killed a puppy so why should I care.

48. And I'm not pro-Opus Dei.
Glad you're not a Stalinist.

Although, on anti-fascism in the Thirties, there were also the Social Democrats in Germany and other places that the Communists in Germany and other places refused to join in an anti-fascist alliance until 1935(I.E., until it was too late), and the anarchists and Trotskyist forces in Spain whom the International Brigades spent as much time fighting against as they did the Fascists.

17. There is a mythology that Hitler was an atheist, or agnostic.
Seems fair to me... in view of the fact that there is a body of evidence, including writings and direct quotes, that such was NOT the case... that the graphic appears.

Misleading? Everyone knows... at least everyone on DU... that not all Germans were Nazis and many Catholics and non-Catholic Christians ( and, oh yeah, atheists and agnostics) opposed Hitler in Germany.

I suspect the poster's intent is to debunk the "Hitler was an atheist" myth. I suppose he/she can speak for him/herself. Anyway, if that is indeed the intent, I like it.

36. Well, since it's a political forum...
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 01:32 AM by QC
simple common sense would suggest that topics here have at least some marginal connection to something at least faintly related to politics, which leaves out the "Is atheism superior or vice versa" circlejerks and the like.

And yes, I do alert the mods when I see divisive, duplicative crap posted here in an attempt to pit Democrats against each other.

By the way, do you have anything intelligent to contribute to this forum, or are you just here to stir the shit as hard as you can and then complain about the stink?

7. Where does it say...
...that GD isn't the place to post religious threads?

There is a GD Politics forum, yet I see political threads here in this GD.

There is a LGBT rights forum, yet I see lots of gay related threads in this GD.

There is a 9/11 forum, yet I see the occasional 9/11 threads in this GD.

And my list could go on.

If you don't like all the religious and Pore threads, then why don't you hide the threads? Isn't that the simple solution?

I believe that organized religon was created to control people, have power and accumulate wealth. Hitler used religion for his own purpose as does the Silverspoon Sociopath and his vile Junta.

The Forum for religious stuff was created for a specific purpose. Why not use it for that purpose?

12. The Pope is a head of state, the Vatican.
I don't think discussing his imminent death is any different that talking about Prince Ranier of Monaco, who is also deathly ill, but no one seems to have any interest in him.

I thought the religion and theology forums were to discuss just that and probably the Bible, not history in the making.

13. Q: What's the difference between religion and politics?
One has a church, the other a capital building (or state building, et al). One has a set of beliefs people agree with and agree to adhere to, well ok both do. One has groups of people within it's body that try to get others to see they way, oh wait they both do again.

Hmmm. They both have leaders. They both have documents they try to live by (bible, koran, constitution, etc), they both want peace but often it ends in war somehow (which says more about humans than either religion or political/philosophical belief). They both think their way is the right or best way to get the best results.

So what results do they want? One wants the followers to live a pleasing life to the creator and in doing so all benefit, the other wants us to lead a life which pleases the goals they set as time goes on - both can change over time how they think they should lead their lives for the goal.

Yeah, there are differences - but having been around DU and other political based discussion boards for some time I see more similarities in how people discuss, believe, act, and so on then I have seen differences. From preaching a message through fliers, marches, emails, and so on to convert/change people/things to focusing on one source of problems sometimes (bush/satan).

The church is made up of the same thing the non-church is - us, the human race. Religion is not the problem, politics isn't, the sad psychological state and lack of education on values of love and kindness and openess to others is (to me) the biggest problem.

It's appropriate that discussions of the pope be in GD, even if the discussions are about the current one dying. Given his statements about end of life decisions, it will be interesting to see how this man, with access to the best medical care on earth, will handle his own end of life decisions.
