How did they complete Terri's autopsy so fast?
A forensic pathologist on MSNBC said that it would take several weeks to complete. He said that it would take about two weeks for the brain to harden so that it could be sectioned off for examination. Maybe they aren't doing a complete neurological autopsy, but I thought the whole point of this was to lay to rest any questions about how severe her brain damage was.

1. Maybe they have completed enough
and 'removed' enough things that the body can be returned for burial/cremation/etc.

7. Autopsy's done/Report will take weeks
They said the autopsy would be completed within 24 hours. (Actually they said the body would be released within 24 hours.) The *report* won't be ready for several weeks.

8. Therei s the 'gross' autopsy--what can be seen with the naked eye and
then there is the more detailed microscopic examination of tissues that will take, at a minimum, two weeks.

Not sure.

3. Just got the pieces they needed for analysis
Examination & analysis comes next. That's what takes so much time.

5. Gross post-mortem examination and tissue sample collection
(including the brain) is "fast." The lab procedures for testing and pathological examination is what is time consuming. The latter is what will require weeks. And, I can assure you, they obtained the whole brain.

6. The autopsy is complete -
the body has been examined and pathology samples taken (brain) and it can now be released for a funeral and cremation. The determinations from the pathology samples will take several weeks.

9. A five-hour autopsy is a very long autopsy
I've observed a number of them, and they usually only take an hour or two. This sounds like a particularly thorough and careful post-mortem.

I'd hate to be that forensic pathologist. The whole world will be looking over his shoulder.

11. The large structures can be autopsied within a few hours
organs are removed and weighed and assessed for signs of trauma. Tissue and blood samples are obtained and either preserved or frozen.

Xrays are done within about an hour.

What takes all the time is running the various screens for toxins and examining selected tissues microscopically.

12. No, they said it would take weeks for the RESULTS...
... the actual procedure itself takes only a couple hours.

14. That's for the tissue test results - the cutting is *very* fast.
It's a few hours, absolute MAX.
