To all my Catholic friends at DU...
I extend my condolences to you. Even though I am not a Catholic and found many of the Pope's statements to be contradictory to my own beliefs, I recognize the important place he held in your faith. I am sorry about the pain you feel.

5. I'm not sure what to think about this
Edited on Sat Apr-02-05 03:33 PM by Midnight Rambler
I haven't been Catholic for years. As an institution, I'm not a big fan of the Catholic Church. As for John Paul himself, there are things I really admire about him, and things I dislike. It is sad that he died, and my condolences to all Catholic DUers. But I myself remain conflicted.

8. Thank you Maddy.
I didn't think it would have such an effect on me. I am in tears.

May he rest in peace.

Let the good that he did for the poor, for children, and for the sick shine through those matters on which we did not agree.

I pray that the Church will find a good leader to succeed him, and that the Church will one day come to a different position on those matters with which we don't agree.

21. RIP Pope
Haven't been to mass since the day I was confirmed, but my wife is a catholic in good standing (even though the church refused to marry us because we had lived together for 7 years..).

Still don't agree with or support the Catholic church, but JJPII led a very interesting life, and I actually agreed with some of the things he said over the years.

Glad he's at peace.

Since this is my first post, I guess I should say, "Hi" to all you folks, too. :)

Tim

27. I agree.
I am Jewish, and I although he stood for some things I disagree with, I appreciate his apology for the hatred of the past millenia. I also commend his role in the fall of communism and his resistance to the Nazis in WWII. Although he was not my spiritual leader, I send my condolences to those of you who looked up to him. Godspeed, Mr. Woyotla.

28. If I may speak on behalf of us non practicing Catholics...
Many of us have had mixed thoughts and emotions over the past few weeks. I do hope people will respect the struggle some of us are going though right now.

I too offer my condolences, thoughts, and meditations on what I know is a difficult time for the people of my faith, even those of us who have turned their back on the Church and it's teachings, but still harbor warm feelings toward the good things it has done, despite our disagreements with some of the Church's decisions.

Farewell Papa John, I know you'll find peace...

Even a heathen can tell that John Paul II meant a great deal to you and to the world. My heart goes out to you in your time of loss, but I must rejoice for the Pope himself because he is free now.

I'm an athiest, but I understand how important Johannes Paulus II is to the world, not just Catholicism.

My condolences to everyone moved by the passing of this man.
