Statement from John Kerry
http://kerry.senate.gov/v3/cfm/record.cfm?id=235240
Washington, D.C. -- Senator John Kerry issued the following statement on the passing of Pope John Paul II.

"The Holy Father led the Catholic Church during some of the most challenging times the world has witnessed, and persevered through enormous suffering with inspirational dignity. Teresa and I were deeply saddened to hear of his passing."

"Drawing upon his enduring moral strength and conviction, Pope John Paul II advanced the cause of solidarity in his native Poland and helped to topple communism around the world. We will never forget the example he set by forgiving the man who tried to take his life, and by praying at the Western Wall to ask Jews for their forgiveness. He traveled to places forgotten by all but God to pray for the sick and the poor, and millions turned out to hear his voice, even when strained. In death, as in life, his incredible spirit provides every Catholic with strength and his memory provides us with wisdom. Teresa and I join people all over the world in mourning this tremendous loss. The Holy Father is in our prayers."

32. Bush is trying to score political points as usual
"Culture of life" and all that nonsense. Disgraceful. The Holy Father believed in the REAL culture of life, which includes life AFTER birth as well.

4. THis is how a true man and leader responds to the passing of the Pope.
Of course, John Kerry is a true man and leader. In fact, if it were not for the mess that is our election system and the ownership of voting machines by large corporations, he would be sitting in the office he earned- the Oval Office.

7. Actually
If it hadn't been for ownership of voting machines by large corporations, Al Gore would be issuing a statement from the Whitehouse.

President Gore should have been in his second term. I even have a feeling the Pope may have lasted a few more years if bush had never stolen the office. Maybe if he didn't have to see all the heartbreak that bush brought us, his health would have been better. Of course the last part is pure speculation on my part.

statements just further prove what class acts they are and further illustrate what a putz Bush is. While Kerry's and Clinton's respective statements highlighted the Pope's convictions and accomplishments, all Bush could do is use the event of a kind and good man dying to his own political ends.

27. So true, how insulting of Bush
to force his political ideologies "protect the weak" "sanctity of life" into a statement about the passing of the pope. How inappropriate.

38. I'd have preferred a beer with the pope
He would have had some interesting stories to tell and they probably wouldn't have all started with the pronoun "I".

39. No, I'd rather give * an enema w/ a beer, not drink one w/ him....

And I think the Pope would have been a fascinating person to "have a Beer with (or share the "wine" aka body of Christ with)....

Pope John Paul II was a Philosopher and an intelligent thinking and feeling person....

The Boy King is none of those things....

16. it is sad. i dont know why, the people that own these religions
dont stand up for themselves. i have been thinking about catholics a lot the last couple days for different reasons. my husbands family, clear to his grandparents on both sides, big catholics, all the stuff, in church all the time. a decade ago, my in laws were told their two younger sons were gay. after that sunk in a couple years, these catholics that loved adn cherished their religion walked away. told husband today, the religion let them go. they had such love for religion, but couldnt do it, knowing they are suppose to support the hate of their son

as far as i see, this is their religion. and it is kerry's relgion

and shame on the church

to the world. and they were still willing to dump him, and not support him, because of agenda

this to me is huge in the sadness of our spirituality

15. Beautiful Statement
It's strange how in the tributes to JPII you can see the values of the people speaking. I love his emphasis on JPII's ability to forgive and his concern for the poor and sick. ("places forgotten by all but God" - lovely phrase)

A President we could have been proud of. (Teresa and John representing the US would have been incredible - Gracious and they can speak Italian)

17. Thank you so much for this post. I had to tune out *B's phony
statement. I loved this Pope. A true humanitarian. A liberal on important social issues, IMHO. And consistent. Pro-life means anti-war, anti-death penalty, anti-poverty, and, for the Pope anti-abortion, which is consistent with his views on the sanctity of human beings.

23. If only we had a TRUE Christian in the White House - John Kerry
A man who lives the ideals that Christ set forth for His disciples - love, charity, compassion, forgiveness, acceptance.

This charlatan we are stuck with is a Pharisee through and through, a self-righteous, blustering hypocrite who uses God as a weapon and who betrays all the principles that he claims to espouse. Remember how much Jesus hated hypocrisy...
