Gas went up $.20/gal over the weekend here.
When I got off work Friday night, gas was at $2.35/2.55/2.75 for the 3 grades. Didn't go anywhere Saturday, tonight I went to the market. Driving past several local stations the CHEAPEST prices were $2.55/2.75/2.95 - dayum, I'm sooo screwed! How can working people do their jobs if (no, correct that - when) gas keeps making these leaps? Kinda hard to haul mops, vacuum, buckets, supplies, etc on a friggin' bike (FWIW - I'm a housekeeper).

Just, screwed!

How's everyone else going to adapt to the ballooning prices? I know they're way higher in Europe, but I'm not sure how they handle it. The lack of public transit here really has me worried. How can you work if you can't get there w/the supplies?

I'm seriously looking for ideas here.

3. I've been considering doing just that for awhile now. Trying to hold off..
as much as possible since there's alot of competition from others that are younger & faster (but, not nearly as thorough ... think tortoise & hare, I'm slower but I do a much better job & come in ahead!) - comes a point, though.

Course, they'll be jacking their rates too. Most around here have gotten shiny-new vans & SUV's to haul their stuff, they'll have to go up faster & higher. It was just a shock to see such a jump while I basically slept!

4. about 15 cents here (NE-PA
running between 2.15 - 2.19 as of Saturday -- although we did find one place still selling at 2.08 (that won't last long)

while we are pumping gas into our tanks -- GOPers are sucking OUR money out of our pockets and into big "biddness" bank accounts

no surprise here that we are not hearing anything about "possible" congressional investigations into price gouging or market manipulation

next "spin" will be about supply shortages due to switch over from "winter blends" to "summer blends" of gas and this is a "normal" occurance which is why gas costs so much

6. LOL - I noted that, too. Do they sell backpacks big enough for vacuums?
I know, complain ... complain. I'm too old to give up the car & haul everything in a rucksack, methinks I need a new job (preferably working out of the house & NOT involving swabbing someone else's potty)! How do you 'guys' make rent, bills, etc w/that kind of gas bill?

...Dubya, are they getting rebates or something on gas? They don't seem to notice the rising prices on not just gas, but everything else in America.

10. Slightly smaller scale here in Arkansas:
On Friday, 87 octane was $2.11.9, Saturday saw $2.17.9 at the two stations in my little town. Diesel, meanwhile, is at $2.33.9 and there is growing talk among the boys who drive big commercial trucks about the future of their small businesses.

Now, go figure this: the aluminum boat plant in a neighboring (and larger) town is having trouble keeping up with orders for john boats from a large customer in Texas.

on EBay. :-(

They're going for more than my car cost.

Gas 87-$2.09 in Iowa-up from $2.02 Friday. Also noticed plastic items increasing drastically.

28. Ok, got a plan! One of my clients has a garage full of 'toys' - scooter ..
in the corner. I've broached the subject of doing extra work in a swap for the scooter, already do them 2 days a week. I figure goimg in on 1 of my days off for X number of days a month (hubby has to approve the deal & dicker the cost w/me) will be a partial solution. Even if I can't use it for all my jobs, it can sub for alot of the car stuff. I'm at 2 houses 2-3 times a week, so it would be workable to stock a cubby in their homes, so there would be little to require a car to haul. The others, raise their rates now.

Wasn't kidding w/the rocking chair granny pic, LOL - can't wait to see the road reactions to the 'grey granny biker'!

12. Raise your rates
annually, you should be able to raise your rates about five percent. If you have steady customers who prefer you, they'll understand and pay.

14. Whoa. $.20/gal. over the weekend?
I paid $2.09/gal. at Costco (always the cheapest around here) Friday night. I haven't seen a price since then. I'll check the station down at the corner when I go out in a while to take the kids to school.

This is getting bad.

15. hybrid and RWers reaction
Due to gas prices rising, two weeks ago, I traded my big SUV for Ford Hybrid. I realize not everyone can do that. Now saving amazing amount of $$ on gas. Funny, RWers seem to react as if I'm not patriotic unless I am spending all my money on gas for a hummer???

Would love a snazzy bumper sticker to go with new vehicle,like.."BWA HA HA HA HA!" but afraid my vehicle would be vandalized by pissed off RWers or I would be run off the road.

If you do find a solution, be careful regarding all those folks driving the huge hogs.. They are plenty mad!

19. I looked into buying a hybrid about a year ago....
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 08:52 AM by tx_dem41
Doing the math on the amount of gas I would save compared to the "extra" charge of the Hybrid (which averaged about $3,000 more than the non-hybrid version), I just couldn't justify it. Driving about 15,000 miles a year on average, it would have taken me about 6-7 years to cover the "extra" charge.

In other words, I wouldn't start "saving" money until after 6-7 years.

That's a somewhat short-sighted analysis and missed two important points:

1. You'll start saving *THE PLANET* immediately by reducing the amount of oil that needs to be pumped, refined, and transported and by reducing the amount of CO2 produced. Remember: Every gallon of fuel you burn probably consumed 2 or 3 gallons of crude oil (what with energy losses along the way to your car).

2. Oil prices are onlyheading in one direction, so your savings may go up dramatically in "the out years".

3. Finally, by reducing the demand for oil, you'll be doing your part to help *HOLD DOWN THE PRICE OF FUEL* so the payoff will again be shorter than you think.

If you don't want to spring for a hybrid, buy a 50 MPG turbo diesel.

20. Up 15 Cents in Peoria........

Gas went up 15 cents here in Peoria, it went from $2.05 to $2.20 virtually overnight. The main reason given was the future oil price target by some wall street firm of $100.00 a barrel.

I believe oil went up $2.00 a barrel after their prediction.

29. $2.99.9 for premium on the way home from work today. I think that the ...
station is scared of that extra tenth of a cent. People might notice when it officially hits $3.00. That'll fire up the repubs around here, even!

22. Europe handles it because:
> I know they're way higher in Europe, but I'm not sure how they handle it.

Europe handles it because:

1. Their high price is, in large part, a conscious decision to impose taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel. So a lot of the money spent at the pump gets turned back into social investments.

2. Most places in Europe have highly-developed mass-transit systems that work fairly well (and work "remarkably well" by 'Murcan standards). These transit systems are subsidized by those fuel taxes we just discussed.

3. Most Europeans don't see their cars as extensions of their dicks, so they're not dick-headed enough to go buy a 12 MPG SUV just so they can sit alone in traffic on the Autostradde. Fuel prices don't sting quite as much when you're driving a 50 MPG turb-diesel Jetta or Citroen.

4. Most Europeans don't have a daily commute that is nearly as long as all the Americans who accepted "White Flight to gated suburbs" as the answer to all of our urban problems.

5. Europeans also seem to know how to walk and ride bicycles and even motor scooters, all much more fuel-efficient ways of getting around town than an SUV with one person in it.

Gas went from $1.99 to $2.23. Lots of SUV's with FOR SALE signs on them, but who the hell would buy one now? I joked with my SO that we needed to put our 2001 Metro LsI in the paper for about $10K and see if we get any suckers, I mean buyers.
