Don't shop at WalMart, Home Depot & Circuit City!
Instead shop at Costco, Walgreen & Barnes & Noble.

http://www.choosetheblue.com/main.php

We need more choices I know - but we need to take a stance where we can to show that supporters of evil should not be supported by their real base - the retail store shopper! I'm going to commit to drive 15 miles to the nearest Costco so I can avoid WalMart and Target (I'm so sorry to see Target almost as bad as WalMart)...

I looked at www.buyblue.org, and they have Lowe's listed as Red. They did say that they were pretty politically inactive last election, but in the past, they were 100% Repuke. If they are actually blue, or even neutral now, I'll happily shop there instead.

Some of the info on Buy Blue and Choose The Blue is conflicting. I'll have to look into it more.

58. Maybe Ace or True Value
Those are buying cooperatives, not chains--the stores themselves are independently owned. That's about as close to a blue home repair store as you're gonna get.

Lowe's is redder than Home Depot.

They also treat their employees worse, at least in this town--as of the last orientation class, 45 of our number quit working at Lowe's to come to work for Home Depot because Lowe's treats their people like shit.

on the computer hardware side, while HP, IBM and so forth
give way more to democrats...

they are also outsourcing high value jobs as fast as they can.

hmmm...

although another aspect to this is Costco gives employee benefits
and good jobs while selling us very cheap stuff and Wal-mart is
busy obtaining social services subsidies in order to keep their
wages below poverty and literally pulled a store out of Canada
just to union bust.

Amazon outsources, Powell's books in Oregon does not.

73. Ah, the old divide and conquer!
I think that is a bullshit ranking, to be blunt about it--they give seven hundred grand to the dems, but give MILLIONS to the GOP, in the form of favorable propaganda stories, puff pieces, and apologetic news "readers" (not reporters, certainly!)--you couldn't find enough cash to pay for that kind of syrupy coverage. THEN, they ice the cake with their broadcasting arm--showing provocative programs, slutty reality shows, edgy cartoons, and minority-centered sitcoms, all to drag the blue voters over to their corner.

On their cable news arm, they decry sleazy TV, and on their entertainment arm, they DEFINE sleazy TV.

Hypocrisy in Action--that's Faux for ya! Keep clicking!

32. It'll be 2 years for me soon also, and I'm saving also
I would always go to those supercenter ones. I always bought WAY more than I needed because everything was right there. See I'm lazy and hate running errands, so now I pretty much only buy food for my family. My kids have enough crap and should be spending more time outside or inside learning something.

Now can somebody give me a reason to stop shopping at Target? It's not as bad as my Walmart habit was, but damn they have nice things for the price.

24. Home Depo = No Cashiers
We all know how big those stores are and what people purchase there, right? Well, the store near where I live has eliminated all but one cashier. The other checkout is scan, bag, and pay yourself. The other 4 spots where the cash registers used to be are completely gone, so this is not a temporary situation. With the upcoming spring gardening and fix up season, the lines will be going to the back of the store.

31. Yup
This is what you need to do. A comprehensive evaluation of a company must be done (usually by those who have experience on the inside) in order to evaluate who that company truly supports.

There are companies that on the outside look one way, but on the inside it's a WHOLE different story...

33. That is an undertaking that is being started now - it's tough to do
It's easy to hate WalMart and their politics though. It's easy to be turned off by Home Depot and their "patriotic" mumbo-jumbo hung from the rafters. I hate shopping at Circuit City anyway - it's just a stupidly designed store. I can only use the shop blue sites as a reference - there is more information on "open secrets' if you need to investigate the type of donations and whatever other information is available. It's better than doing nothing as the Dems have been for how many years?

36. An even better idea
is just to shop from individuals (i.e. ebay) or small local stores. Granted, you may do business with republicans but more than likely they won't be giving anything near what a large corporation could.

I buy almost everything except food from either ebay or small stores. I can't count how many years it's been since I've actually bought something from a place that has more than one store.

Ebay requires shipping sometimes, and I only ship with UPS because I've also worked there and I know it's a solid democratic pro-union company that treats employees very well. In order for me to consider a company truly democratic I need far more convincing than some donation record.

Ebay, or small retailers whenever I can.

Here's how I operate (when I truly have a choice):

There was a guy who used to go to this restaurant/bar I hung out at. He used to go on and on with the RW talking points at the bar - and he was a 42 year old letch who was dating one of the teenagers who worked at his ice-cream shop (she was of age by the time he dated her). He recently opened a nice restaurant nearby - but I will NEVER go into it. I will NEVER buy ice-cream at his shitty little ice cream shop too. That's what I call politics of choice... I apply the same principals to others I meet locally. The RW nut who owns a home building outfit? NEVER will se my business...

Our "great shopping expierences" are at MallWart (which I refuse to go into) or Kmart, which is 45 min. away. Needless to say, the RiteAid gets my business for tp and sundries. Internet shopping is great out here in the boonies.

55. Fry's Electronics for California and Texas DUer's
its an apolitical electronics retailers. Its pretty fun to shop there too since they're always having good specials and sales. Service is on the low end though.

57. Yes Fry's is very cool.
The only time we purposely drive north of the river is to shop at Costo and Fry's. They're both north of the Colorado River in Austin. But South Austin is the really blue part of Austin. We supposedly will be getting a Costco in South within the next two years. I can't wait.

65. Yeah, I've tried to hate Starbucks because they are so damn big
but it's a good company and heh, heh, created here locally. (I say that laughingly because it's not really local anymore)

75. SB should serve fair trade EVERY day. Until then, no way...
I've written them and been told to enjoy SB coffee on the 20th of the month when they serve fairly traded coffee. A chain that big and blue stands at a portal to making the whole nation understand the importance of fairly traded coffee...yet they serve it only one day a month until it runs out.

What a waste.

And they overroast their beans.

61. Walgreen's is good?
i'm so glad, they are right on the corner and have some good deals on stuff

too bad about Target though... But most anything I can get at Target I can usually find at the thrift store

and since K Mart stood behind Martha Stewart, they're still on my list too.

66. But beware CVS--they are encouraging, at least allowing, their
pharmacists to steal and not fill birth control and morning after pill prescriptions.

I boycott anything with Wal- in the name: Wal-Mart, Walgreens, and Waldenbooks

Little local pharmacies are a better choice.

62. Finally something I don't have to change
I've refused to shop at Walmart for years and as off November of last year Home Depot and Circuit City were both off my approved list. Barnes and Noble was added at that time. I've been a fan of Costco for a long time and when I need to go to a big drugstore, I always go to Walgreens, though I try to get most prescriptions filled at a small family owned drugstore here.

They aren't by any means an evil company. They do good things for the communities they're in, they aren't abusive or monopolistic, and they're one of the few companies capable of challenging Wal*Mart for local markets.

70. Death Trap Depot is the worst
Home Depot, never mind being red, is one of the worst corporate criminals in the country. They have a horrendous record of accidents in their stories, causing injuries and deaths to customers and workers. And they've apparently decided to factor the cost of settling lawsuits into their bottom line, rather than spend money on fixing safety hazards.

Bobby Kennedy Jr. and Mike Papantonio did a segment on this on "Ring of Fire" radio a few months back (I can't find the exact reference).

The Atlanta Business Chronicle did a good series of exposes about Home Depot in 2003 -

72. Sear's bought K-Mart
I thought someone said SEAR'S was red. I can't remember for sure.
I buy CITGO cause Du'ers say to, but I am not sure why. It is actually a cent or two cheaper here and there are long lines. I'm not sure if it is saving the penny or so, or buying blue, but I always have to wait for a pump to open up.

Best Buys and Circuit City are the only 2 real electronics retail stores in the area. I used to be a BB person, till, I got screwed on a rebate and found out they charge restocking fees on returned items. What are we to do?

PS.
I use high level cookies except for DU and Ebay. I seem to pick up Ad-Aware critical objects when I follow Du links. Please be conscious when linking. I don't know if it was this thread or another one.

83. Citgo is not that good
the Houston Press did a story about them. They are very labour unfriendly. I back my union brothers. Women need to picket some of the pharm pricks. That would get their attention. I will not shop at CVS if they deny women's right to safe birth control.

85. You can find 90% of the stuff you need at Costco...top quality, too.
But at times I'm forced to go to Home Depot because local lumberyards and Lowe's just don't have the selection of home improvement stuff I need.
