Filibuster Activism - Use YOUR Backbone
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 01:47 PM by sandnsea
On Edit: If you have free cell minutes, get the phone number to your local Pub Senator, write up quick talking points, and just ask people to call on the spot. Take the petiton too, because lines might be busy or people will be shy. But alot of people will say, well hell yeah. Thank you poster down there who I forgot their name for that great idea. (One more edit: Thanks Nite Owl)

It's time to get up and get out on the streets. Everything you need is in this link. We have to get outside and talk to people. The petition is an opportunity to be visible in your neighborhood and circumvent the media. Get people to sign the petitions and then fax them to the number in the link. Even better, get people to call or fax your Republican Senator. This ought to be something we can all agree on and present in a way that isn't controversial. Lots of links and info here:
http://www.lightupthedarkness.org/blog/default.asp?view=plink&id=664

"Today, a group of GOP and religious right representatives held a press conference supporting Bill Frist’s nuclear option, including Grover Norquist, Gary Bauer, Kay Daly, representatives from the Catholic Church, a group called American Civil Rights Union, and others. They say the votes are there, despite press reports to the contrary.

But we are fighting back. PFAW has launched a $5 million television campaign, as has Alliance for Justice and Moveon. These groups have formed a coalition and will be outlining more of their campaign tomorrow. We outlined what activists MUST DO yesterday, and encourage you to get out there and inform the public. You can find petitions, talking points, letters to fax and links here.

Senator Kerry released the following:

Last week, thanks to you, Republicans in Congress heard first hand how Americans will not stand by quietly and let their voices be silenced. Tomorrow morning, we will take the next step, when a vitally important johnkerry.com ad appears in USA Today. I will send a copy to every one of my Republican colleagues in the Senate. When I do, I want to tell them that the number of people standing behind the ad's powerful message now stands at over 200,000. Help us get there.

See the ad - and count yourself among those personally supporting its message.

http://www.johnkerry.com/usatoday

Tens of thousands of you have already called your Republican Senators opposing GOP leaders' efforts to invoke the so-called "nuclear option" on the confirmation of federal judges. We are acting in response to a disturbing pattern in which a handful of Republican leaders seek the ability to do whatever they want, whenever they want, without regard to principle.

We have to act because America can't afford to go where they're trying to take us.

http://www.johnkerry.com/usatoday

The Republican drive to silence your voice in Washington is in high gear. House Leader Tom DeLay has led a no-holds-barred drive to silence all opposing voices in the Congress. He also engineered a highly partisan effort to force the redrawing of congressional districts in Texas - funded by heavy-handed tactics that led to the indictment of three close DeLay associates. And last week, DeLay issued an ominous threat that federal judges (appointed by both Democrats and Republicans) who dared to defy his wishes in the Terry Schiavo case will have to "answer for their behavior."

Making President Bush's judicial nominations immune to a Senate filibuster is the next step in the GOP's out-of-control grab for power. If Senator Frist, the Senate Majority Leader, can convince enough Republican Senators to go along, the nomination and confirmation of judges will become a tightly-controlled, one-party affair.

We're calling on Republican Senators to persuade their party's leaders not to pursue this reckless course.

If you haven't done so already, please contact your Republican Senator's office. Politely let him or her know that, as a constituent, you are deeply opposed to Senator Frist's "nuclear option" plan. Then take another step. Add your name to the list of those personally supporting our call for an end to the wide-ranging Republican assault on constitutional principles.

Thanks for helping with this vital and time-sensitive effort.

Sincerely,

John Kerry

P.S. When I send our USA Today ad to my Republican colleagues tomorrow morning, I want to tell them that its message has been personally backed by over 200,000 people. You can help us reach that goal. Please sign now - and, after you do, please forward this e-mail to your friends, neighbors, and family."

1. Just the events from last week with poor Terry Schiavo
alone are enough to warrant fighting the end of the judicial filibuster. I agree, we have to do everything we can to fight this.

3. I have too
and working it into conversations. When moveon had their call in day we stood outside the PO with our cell phones and got people to call on the spot. Lots more said that they would call and would tell others. NO ONE, not a single person had even heard of this. What I fould helpful in talking to republicans was to say that this would now set a policy and it it would be turned on them some day, the courts need bipartisan support.

Call your Senator even if they are a dem and urge them to pressure their republican colleagues.

#3 in red, if you click on that it's a good poster, flyer to hand out and you can put in your Senator's #'s

We have been leaving them around places. Waiting rooms at the dentist or doctor's office, rest rooms. Someone just might pick it up and read it and be shocked that this is happening.

6. Call Republican Senators... even if they are not yours!
It does not matter if they represent you, call them anyway.

11. In your opinion, which are the best ones to call?
I've been wondering about this. Some just aren't going to be moved, period. A few are on the fence, as I understand it. So which ones would it be most productive to call?

10. Question: Do any Democrats need to be contacted?
I know Republicans do, but I was wondering if there are any Democrats wavering on this.
