This makes me mad.
I have a friend who is serving in Korea right now and he has Internet access. He is telling me he can not log onto DU and other progressive sites but, is allowed free access to Free Repubic and other right wing nut-ball sites. And this is in the barracks not on an official Govt computer. This is just outrageous. He also is not allowed to stream Air America. So the next time someone claims that 90% of the troops support bush we may know the cause.

1. This is not a private company?
He should file a lawsuit. Some Rethug admin has usurped free speech.

Can he hit porn sites?

That really sucks because
my husband and I will soon be moving to S. Korea and living on post. I hope it isn't that way in housing. 90% do not support Bush, most we know can't stand him.

2. That would explain why we get so few posts from military personnel.
You'd think we'd have a few of them on here, as much as we discuss them.

8. Have him try typing in the I.P. address
in the address bar.
Most filters cant recognize sites this way.
I used to know how to find it, but old age, you know...

9. Just ping the site to get ip Addy
open a dos window type in "ping democraticunderground.com"
the ip appears to be 216.158.28.196
I just noticed the pings time out. This indicates to me that the site doesn't allow pings (defense against attacks no doubt)

10. I come up with,

216.158.28.199

Type that in your address bar and it should lead to DU's homepage.

Edit: Both addresses work.

11. Anonymous Proxies
Edited on Mon Apr-04-05 06:35 PM by mrfrapp
If IP addresses don't work, your friend could try an anonymous proxy. It's been years since I've used one so I don't know which ones are good at the moment. Perhaps someone else can suggest one.

I don't have the resources at the moment, but it wouldn't be a bad idea for an enterprising DUer to set up an anonymous proxy for use by those troops who want to post here.
