3. I know your post will tick off some people, but ...
to be honest, I've been thinking that all day because the cable news channels have been covering every second of it as if something is going to change. I understand that they want to show how many people came to pay their respects, but is 24/7 coverage necessary?

6. I hate "body in the box" reportage
Even though I am not Catholic I think he was a great guy, but I don't watch any of the coverage. I am busy on the message boards anyway.

The best way to memorialize this man is to contribute to feed those who are hungry, and to stand up for those who are oppressed. Walking next to a dead body is not the way to show you care for his message. Do his message, be the change that both he and you want to see in the world

10. Ever been to the Vatican? They had the shoddiest souveniers --
-- I've ever seen. Plastic pontiffs, crosses, all kinds of religious crap and poorly made, at that.

I'll bet they're all sold out by the time the funeral's over on Friday.

11. I hate the Church News Network thing too...

I have two theories.

One is that CNN is in cahoots and complicit with the administration, and they're willfully taking the chance to black out other "unpatriotic" news such as the attacks on Abu Ghraib and Bush's recess appointments; possibly they've been coerced to do this.

The other is that they sort of knotted themself into a position where they *have* to give spectacular unwavering coverage to the Pope's death, since only a few days ago we got a wall-to-wall week of newsblanking deathwatch for a random citizen. If they commit less coverage to the Pope it looks sort of bad.

That, or they're quite enjoying the rest. They're even letting clergy co-anchor.

14. I think both your theories are accurate.
The last one especially. Also there won't be any real news now for a month, isn't it?, until they pick the next pontiff.

8. Can you stand it?!
I came home the other day, and hubby gave me the update.

Fox had him dead, MSNBC 'grave condition' (isn't that dead?). O8)

CNN was still trying to confirm the rumors. It was too much!

Later, I saw Fox was 'awaiting word from the Vatican', lest they step in it again.

13. Breaking news: The world is currently without a Pope
Let us hope the next pope can bring about real change in the Catholic Church regarding women's rights, contraception, marriage for clergy, and acceptance and embrace of gays.
