Poll question: The Things which Unite Us
I am writing on an article by Dennis Prager (right wing radio host, I think, and columnist) for the Blog, in which he says "It is difficult to overstate the depth of the differences between the Judeo-Christian view of the world and that of its opponents, most particularly the Left."

My response to this is that may be true for Dennis Prager, and many Republican Leaders and Conservative Commentators. But for the majority of Americans, even those who vote for President Bush, the things which unite us as Americans are greater than the things which divide us.

I was curious to see how my fellow DUers think about it. Do you agree with this statement? "The things which united us as America, in general, are greater than those which divide us."

Bryant

1. I tend to agree, but
I'm not really sure *what* those things are (that unite us). I know I do manage to get along on a social level with a lot of Republicans, while at the same time managing to be extremely annoyed by some of my sanctimonious liberal peers. I think the statement is mainly true for the 80% of the population who don't think much about politics and ideology. Those of us who can't help thinking about those things find it hard to imagine how people can ally themselves with the Right, because we see that as fundamentally immoral. But most people don't see it that way.

3. You're probably right about that 80% of Americans,

but I for one find very little to unite me (an atheist) with members of the Republican party which is becoming more and more the conservative Christian party.

Hell, its now legal in Mississippi for them to put up the 10 Commandments and In God We Trust etc. on State buildings. I'm getting so sick and tired of the Right trying to shove their religion down my throat I find myself losing what little respect I had left for Christians, and for me, the divide widens.

2. Prager's an ass. The "Judeo-Christian view" of the world is...
the same as a "Western" view of the world. It is not a political term.

4. Now, the things that divide us are greater than those that unite us...
unfortunately. The "dividers" are winning.

6. You mean Dennis Prager?
I'm not surprised, I think in his quiet way he's worse than Ann Coulter.
