RW Fundie Skywriters Over Florida?......Praise Jesus! Jesus Loves You!
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 01:18 PM by KoKo01
I just returned from two weeks in Florida--Boca Raton/Delray Beach area.

On three separate days we were treated to two planes skywriting:

Jesus Loves You :-) Praise Jesus!

AND while sitting on the beach in Delray:

Jesus + God = :-)

The "smiley's" were part of the message, btw.

We were on a vacation to visit relatives, and to get away from politics, but this constant effort by the skywriters really freaked me out. They wrote this Jesus stuff in the sky twice a day on two our of the four days we were in the Boca area. It was pretty scary considering the Boca Area is heavily Jewish and I would think this would offend lots of people as it did me, and I'm Christian. But, there was not a word about it in the local newspaper. I was told by a friend their that it's common to see these skywriters posting their religious beliefs in the sky there.

I wondered if any other DU'ers are being "treated" to these messages in the sky over where you live? I did see a lone bi-plane working away with some Jesus messages about a year ago here in NC down at Wrightsville Beach, but thought it was just one of the locals doing the "work of the Lord," and shrugged it off. (Also, at that time I figured we'd have a Democrat in the WH, so I wasn't too concerned) Now, I'm thinking this is a new assault on US citizens funded by the RW Religious Fundamentalists which is ongoing all over the US. :scared:

Why aren't citizens complaining about this blatent religious use of our skies. When the RW Fundies start trying to convert the Jews, Muslims, Athiests and others of different beliefs who live in America, shouldn't we all be concerned?

Just a "heads up" for all of you beach dwellers for the coming Summer.
The Religous Skywriters may be coming to cover the skies in your area, too!

ON EDIT to clarify:

Boca and Delray are very wealthy areas. McMansions popping up all over the place plus "tear downs" everywhere with more McMansions which look like Venetian Palaces.

This is NOT an area one would expect to see "Jesus Loves You...Praise Jesus" written in the sky twice a day. And the planes were so high up that the writing filled the sky for MILES! Not your local little puffs from a stunt flyer advertising to eat at "Joe's Fish Bar."

Who would have the money to pay for these jets to do this. The skywriter I saw in NC was using a bi-plane and flying low. A cheap job.

The planes that were writing in Florida were so high up you could barely make them out but they looked like jets and were bright silver not the murkey grey of the old bi-planes. Somebody with big bucks is funding this. And, I think it might be part of a new effort on the part of the right wing. That's why I posted, it was really disturbing considering that Boca/Delray is NOT a Bible belt.

57. It's the latest innovation: JESUS CHEMTRAILS.
Nobody will attach any Sinister Motives to this, now will they? When the Face of Jesus (or that of his Mom) appears in the sky, drawn in barium and aluminum, the Great Chemtrail Conspiracy will be laid to rest once and for all--for about Three Days, until it rises from the dead.

Funny how the Bible Belt is continually slammed by hurricanes, tornadoes, heat waves etc. while we sinners up here in secular Oregon enjoy mild, delightful weather all year. Maybe Jesus is a liberal after all!

6. Get ready for more of the same crap
These people are never so happy as when they are forcing their beliefs on others or putting them out for all to see. Well, actually, I think they are most happiest when they are playing "victim." Can you imagine the outrage had the skywriter wrote "Gay is Good!" or "Have you humped a homo today?" or even "Jews are the Chosen people" everyone else will have to wait in line!" or "Jews + Heaven = No waiting!"... Heads would have exploded!

I have never seen so many "victims" of Christian "bashing" as I have here! Good Grief! There are some people who are quite rude with their opinions on religion and religious leaders. Then, there is the 'other' side who canonizes every religious leader and any disagreement is "Christian bashing!" As if they are the only ones who are religious! :eyes: Some even opine that its all the "new blood" who have chased off the "old guard." Whatever! All I ask is you keep your religion out of my government, and I will keep my politics out of your Church/house of worship!

and do enjoy living here. I love how it's a real relaxed feel and everything. But it does get really nuts. In the movie "Sweet Home Alabama" Resse Witherspoon made a good point. She said coming down to the south when you're from the north is like you're going into another country and you need a passport.

27. I am Southern and live in NC...but I've lived in the Northeast, too.
Southeast Florida doesn't make it as Southern. The whole state is very different being filled with retirees from other parts of the US and immigrants from everywhere. There may be some "old Florida" left along the Georgia/Alabama state lines, but where I was certainly wasn't "Southern" in the traditional sense.

15. Because no one is going to tell them they cannot practice their religion
interesting that it took place over a place that was predominantly Jewish. I would suppose that they are seeking to convert Jews. And if no one complains,(how could they?) the message that is repeated over and over, day after day, more than once a day, will become background music. If it does not convert anyone, it becomes so commonplace as to accept bizarre and circus type preaching for a god, who I am certain really needs people to sell him as he is incapable of doing so himself, it seems.

16. It's better than what I saw last year while trout fishing in PA with
my 5 year old son.

My father-in-law (a RW nutter) owns a Cessna and has taken the boy flying on numerous occasions - so he's really into planes.

So a plane comes down the river trailing a banner. It perks his interest so I give him the binoculars and ask him what he sees. It take him a minute to find it and says it looks like a baby that's been really hurt.

I take the binoculars from him and find to my joy and utter amazement that it's a giant banner showing an aborted fetus. Apparently this is why you're not allowed to have surface to air missiles.

I understand making a stand on issues - but taking a step like this is unspeakeable. How do you explain something like that to a 5 year old?

These people are killing this country.

 Using our skies for religious messages? How about "Allah is Great..Praise Allah." "Jehovah Rules...Jesus is Out." "There is no God..but Satan."

I could think of a bunch of other messages that skywriters paid by groups could post for all of us to see. I would find them all equally offensive...but you didn't really explain what you questioned...so I'm making assumptions that you have no problem with it based on your on religious beliefs. I may have misjudged your post.

Is there still a no-fly zone over DisneyWorld, or has that been lifted?

There was a ruckus over some 'christian' group wanting to protest Disney's Gay Days events a couple of years ago by dragging banners behind planes.

If memory serves, the no-fly rule held and there was talk of creating a permanent no-fly zone over Disney property.

52. LOL
Thanks for the laugh, I needed that! :) As far as I know, the no-fly zone is still in effect over Disney. Here's a brief blurb about it from '03:

Disney Maintains No Fly Zone

A federal court ruled that Disney can continue its security precaution of a FAA no fly zone. The Family Policy Nework was going to fly banners over Disney World reading: "Jesus Christ for Homosexuals.com" during the 13th annual Gay Days celebration at the park. Disney World in Orlando will have 100,000 gays attending the four day event.

The FAA policies were maintained so planes must fly at least 3.3 miles away from the park.

The message we saw would have been visible from Disney, but at least the Jesus crowd can't strafe the It's a Small World ride.

59. Why is this so disturbing?
Someone is simply exercising their First Amendment right to free speech. The message doesn't attack other religions, it simply promotes one religion in a very generic way.

60. It's the context. We've reached the point where religion...
... is being fetishized. It's everywhere, all the time. And there's no tuning it out when, for example, it's smeared across the sky.

Too much of anything -- it just triggers a gag reflex after a while. :(
