Pigman was going off on "Sandy Burglar" this morning...
Just for a moment, when I was scanning the AM dial. I don't have the patience to listen to him for more than a minute or two, but the right-wingers seem to have their panties in a wad over this.

http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/04/01/berger.plea.ap/index.html?section=cnn_latest

I understand that the guy finally admitted to taking & mutilating documents that he shouldn't have, but I don't understand WHY?

But was there any possible sinister motivation for what he did?

Is this just right-wingers trying to indirectly throw more mud on Clinton's legacy? I don't understand why this is such a big issue, or why the guy did it in the fist place. What was the guy cutting up? What did it pertain to? None of the stories on this give any details.

I apologize now if this post seems freepish. It just bugs me...

1. Stupid yes, but how many people were killed?
Bush still way ahead on that score.

3. Berger was not just stupid
He cheated, and he did steal, like it or not. Sorry, but the reality is that Democrats in the public eye have to be pristine, perfect in our dealings in every respect. The Republican controlled law enforcement agencies at the federal level have no obligation to be fair in deciding who gets by with criminal conduct -- and we have to expect them to be unfair. That is just the reality.

4. So true. Repugs can get away with anything but a dead girl or live boy...
And no matter what, I'm sure that Berger's crimes don't hold a candle to the outrages committed by the Bush administration on a daily basis. But I'm still curious what it was about.

With the Bushies, they do so many bad things, so constantly, that it's impossible to keep up with all of it.

2. Per his plea agreement, he will pay a $10,000 fine and
will have his security clearances suspended for three years. World O' Crap has a good piece comparing what he did to what others have done. http://blogs.salon.com/0002874/2005/04/05.html

5. I would like to know why he did that myself. What notes did he not want
anyone to see. But it must not have been that bad being that he has to only pay a fine. The right wingters are, after all, in charge right? Now if he had destroyed the originals AND copies, then he'd be in big trouble.

6. Rush will be raving away to himself long after the world
has taken a wild and unexpected swing back onto the road to health and decency. What Rush says couldn't matter less: it's going to be twisted and bent. It's his job.

7. So? That's just one
on their side of the ledger.

We've got lots more ammo on our side. War, Tom DeLay, deficits, economy, jobless rate, health care, Schiavo, etc. We can beat them at this game.

8. What Pigboy doesn't note, of course
Is that Berger has 'fessed up to his dastardly crime, and will accept the punishment like a man.

Others caught by law enforcement start whining about how their medical records are private and none of anyone's business, and besides he wasn't really trying to avoid reporting thresholds with all those $9,900 transactions. That's just how much he needed, over and over again.

Drug-addled coward.

9. The Sandy Berger thing reminds me of Whitewater
No one could ever explain what that was all about either, that's why I believe it was all just smoke and mirrors. The fact that Berger's actions are considered a mere misdemeanor says a lot to me. Whatever he did, I think it was an accident. If the archives work the way it's been described on DU -- with every single item "checked out" and checked back in at the end like a library, there is no way he could have been intentionally trying to hide anything and think he could have gotten away with it.

10. I still don't understand the Berger story
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 03:29 PM by theboss
He denied do anything and then copped a plea.

I'm not sure why he would take anything. I'm not sure why he would deny it if he did. And it's still not clear what he actually took.

This is such a classic Clinton era "scandal" (and I do use that term loosely). It's something that seems too petty to be of much concern. But at the same time, you wonder how such smart people could end up in such stupid situations.

11. My theory, for what it's worth, is low-level arrogance.
Edited on Tue Apr-05-05 03:38 PM by SmokingJacket
He couldn't have been trying to hide anything, since these were just copies. I think he was pissed at what he saw as bureaucratic nonsense that wouldn't let him take home *copies* of documents he had a hand in producing in the first place. But he wanted to study them further, perhaps in a comfy chair with a glass of bourbon, so he snuck them out.

Refusal to play by the rules, is my guess. Similar to what got Clinton into hot water vis a vis Monica.
