They have fought together many times. General Rochambeau was the architect of the victory at Yorktown. The French committed thousands of troops, their navy, and money to U.S. independence. Cornwallis in fact offered to surrender his sword to Rochambeau after his defeat, but the General instead told him to surrender it to George Washington. Let's not forget the devotion of the Marquis de LaFayette to the cause, including the risk of his life and much of his personal fortune. In World War II, the French Army protected the rear of the British Army as they retreated headlong to Dunkirk. Units from this saved British Army found themselves later in North Africa to open a second front against the Germans and draw away German strength against the Russians. The French also shot down over 1000 German planes during the Battle for France, planes that would not be available to the Germans in the later Battle of Britain. The Free French Air Force pilot Pierre Closterman, fighting out of Britain, was one of the greatest air aces of the war, with approximately 50 kills/probables to his credit. The French volunteer squadrons of the Normandie Niemen within the Russian Army were one of the most highly decorated air units of WWII. The Free French Army helped lift the bloody siege of the American Army at Anzio, Italy when their units pierced the Gustav line, forcing the Germans to retreat. And the French Foreign Legion helped the British Army avoid total rout when they made a brave stand at Bir Hakeim against Rommel. In the Korean War, the French Battalion fought alongside the U.S. Army and won 3 U.S. Presidential Unit Citations for bravery. In Lebannon during Reagan's administration, while over 250 U.S. Marines were dying in a bunker, 56 French marines died alongside them, something never brought to our attention in the U.S. media. In Gulf War I the French also sent considerable numbers of men and materiel and also in Afghanistan. Recently, the French Army rescued U.S. citizens in the Ivory Coast. And the French have devoted considerable intelligence efforts to help the U.S. hunt down Al Qaeda. Yet, Republicans have this French bashing thing. Tonight, I heard O'Reilly actually BLAME the French for dead U.S. soldiers in Iraq because of their lack of cooperation. I guess he would prefer it if they were French dead soldiers instead.
