Credit card companies, credit ratings and India
I get this call last night and I can tell immediately it's from an auto dialer because when I answer there is a delay in the response with a lot of background noise.
When the caller realizes I've struck the bait he starts by asking for "Mr. John XXX" in a moderately thick Indian accent.
I respond by asking who is calling and he tells me it's "Sanjay Gupta" or whatever, calling from Providian Master Card company. He proceeds with the spiel about how I can consolidate my bills and use their credit care with 0% interest for the next 6 months etc, etc, etc.
"Where are you physically?" I ask. "I'm in Bombay, India" (I think) he says.
Me- "How much education do you have"?
Him- "I can't answer that due to security reasons"
Me- "So you are in India, calling me in America about a credit card? America where the economy is terrible, where I have just lost my condo to foreclosure (actually that was about 6 months ago) and my credit rating is in the toilet and you want me as a credit card company?"
Him- "Uhhhhhhhhhhhh"
I laid the phone down as I could hear him still talking. It felt weird knowing that he and I were both part of the so-called 'global economy'. I don't think I like the global economy.........

1. Global Economy = Field day for Robber Barons
Individuals & small businesses negotiating with mega-corporation don't stand a chance.

I hate to sound gloomy, but until people wake up from the christian gun-fetishist, anti-gay marriage stupor, the middle class in the country will continue to dwindle.

PS...I am sorry to hear about your foreclosure. I wish you well!

2. Taming Telemarketers
1. Get an answering machine. Autodialers usually hang up if they get an answering machine.

2. Pick up the phone and don't say anything. If there is a real person at the other end, they will say hello or something when they hear you pick up. Robotic dialers will hang up.

3. Caller ID is your friend.

4. #1 and #2 make the robot dialers hang up, but they'll call you back the next day and the next and.... If you record the "bo-di-weep" tone that you get when you call an invalid phone number, and put it on your andwering machine message, at least some of the robot dialers will take you off their list.

5. Try to get the FTC to actually enforce the "Do Not Call" List!
