A Lovely Day for a Stroll: Bill Clinton in His Element

Clearly unwilling to spend a beautiful day in Rome cooped up in his hotel, he went for a midday stroll, stopping in at a few of the luxury shops on the narrow, cobblestone streets off the square, known for its fountain and familiar to film buffs as the backdrop for a scene in "Roman Holiday."

While Romans were unlikely to catch a glimpse of President Bush - he moved only in motorcades and appeared only at a few official events - Mr. Clinton was clearly reveling in the fact that shoppers, tourists having lunch at outdoor cafes and Italian business people walking to meetings all stopped to greet him.

"Isn't this a great city?" he said. Along the streets, people starting yelling "Bill, Bill, Bill," and a few shouted "U.S.A.!" One shopkeeper raced out with a photograph of Mr. Clinton on a past visit.

5 years later, what a sad difference Current Occupant is.

1. The security issue notwithstanding, I bet the welcome --
-- Dubya would have received on a similar stroll would have been QUITE a bit different.

3. Great post.
Clinton knew--and still knows--what it means to be President. Bush thinks it's all about raw power and message control. Clinton knew there was no real power without the people. Viva Clinton!

5. Man
who DOESN'T miss that ?

Having a leader that is respected by the people of the world, man the 90s were GREAT. It just makes me really sad that this is how far we've fallen.

6. I read that

and the photos are indeed impressive. While Bush is hiding from the crowds, because he is so scared due to his own policies, Clinton just cannot help himself. I think he is the consummate master politician and has used this event to do what he does best--and that is to connect to real people, which he obviously enjoys.

Here is an example

Bush, look at the little boy trying to edge in to the photo op, just like he tried to edge Clinton out of being first to go through a door at the Clinton library opening. This is our presidunce. Ain't he grand? He is a total embarrassment, never grew up and is NOT running anything in his own administration. He is merely a puppet and he knows it and he resents it but is determined to act as if he is really the big honcho-- and I think he knows when he has been upstaged--must piss him off to face his own impotence in these matters.

In this photo, Clinton looks as if he is the president and not the little prick Bush. Clinton looks good here--gracious, dignified and intelligent and actually personally engaged in the matter at hand.

I have to say that I was disturbed at the confluence of Clinton with the Bush family, but I now see, that perhaps the master politician knew very well what he was doing, expecially now that he apparently is in better health.

All of the photos and all of the reports and quotes lead to Clinton upstaging Bush . LOL

11. My God, the body language in that photo is priceless
like bush is desperately saying, "me too, me too." What a dork he is. Look at the presidential bearing of President Clinton. Very good pic...thank for posting it!

7. I miss the big dog too.
http://www.nytimes.com/2005/04/08/international/worldspecial2/08clinton.html?

Jobs, peace, budget surplus, respect, smart, stopped bin Laden and was
human too.

And now we have a guy who mangles the language, ruined the economy,
stole 2 elections, went AWOL, coke head, bully, paid no attention to 9-11 warnings,
said he was going to have war in Iraq as President in 1998, let dick Cheney
divide up Iraqi oil in spring '01, and is hated.

Eat shit and die Ken Starr and all you scum who hounded this good man.

13. Did you see everyone at the funeral flocking to shake his hand and speak
to him but only a very few shook G.W.'s hand.
