why are you a Democrat?
What in you makes you align yourself the way you do? What do you get out of the deal?

(With a bow to Crewleader re: the first thread I responded to almost four years ago.)

4. Because of FDR.
He was the son of a privileged family who saw what was happening in the Great Depression and did all he could to make a difference for the "common man." He won the only war against a foreign power that's ever threatened our national survival, and he moved three generations of Americans forward on a positive, progressive path while the rest of the world sat weeping in the ruins of WWII. He was a true American hero.

6. Because the alternatives are too depressing
Republicans make me gag.

A viable third party doesn't exist yet.

They have us by the balls in this corrupt 2 party system.

7. I spent 24 years supporting and defending the Constitution
against all enemies foreign and domestic. I sincerely believe the republican party and christian conservatives are domestic enemies of the Constitution. I like to minimize damage. I always vote for every democrat on every ballot in an effort to minimize the damage to the constitution. I consider my oath of enlistment still in effect even though I am retired, so if there are any conservatives out there counting heads, don't forget the retired farts you'll have to deal with if you want to fuck with the document we spent years supporting and defending. We swore to support the constitution, not the bible.

24. You are very welcome my Fellow American.
USN Retired CPO. However, I believe I am the one who should be grateful for having the opportunity to serve, and in one small way allow for you and I to chat freely about this and that tonight. So, thankyou for giving me the opportunity to serve.

26. Americans are an inspiration to
fellow Americans to do the right thing. By supporting and defending, I gave you the opportunity to live freely. If you and our other fellow Americans weren't living freely, I'd have no reason to support and defend. That may more exactly explain why I am a Democrat and keep two weary eyes out for conservatives at all times.

22. I'd be more than happy to
shove my medals up their asses. One dumbass told me shortly after the war in Iraq started two years ago that I was unamerican and unpatriotic and that I should leave the country because I did not support bush. I believe his ears are still ringing.

8. The Democratic Party stands closest to my political
philosophy today, which is why I belong to it. When a party with the right leadership comes along that stands even closer to my political philosophy, then I will be gone.

I regret to say that I have no life long loyalties to any organization or system other than my own heartfelt ideals and those entities that are closest to them will get my loyalty for the duration, no longer.

I know you didn't ask this, but I thought I would clarify my position. I know others think like me too. Sometimes an organization will get careless about it's priorities when they assume the unwavering and unquestioning loyalty of their members.

People before profits was the lesson of my childhood
It's why I'm a Liberal...one of the reasons anyway

I'm not out to get anything from believing as I do....it's more a matter of what I can give and contribute...it's the world I leave behind that matters...as hokey as that sounds, for me, it's true...the world we pass on to future generations deserves our best efforts. Even if I only make a small difference to those around me, if that difference is for the good...then I've accomplished something positive for the future.

The republican party does not share my thinking...

9. When we invest in individual potential, the benefits are shared by all
That is Democratic philosophy.

Republicans believe in the trickle down theory - make the rich richer and maybe some of it will trickle down to the unwashed masses.

10. Two reasons
First, family history.

Second, the Democratic party had a nasty habit of usually being on the right side of the major issues of the 20th century. This is as opposed to the GOP, who somehow, in a 2 party system, managed to never be on the right side of the issues. Kinda makes me wonder.

17. As a progressive
I gave up on the Dems since they focused too much on gay marriage than jobs in the last election. I always had more of a connection with the Greens. However, why am I progressive? It's moral to aid those that can make a good quality life for themselves and our planet. Education over ignorance. Quality of life over life but not healthy. Environment over extinction. Jobs over welfare. Peace over war. And, finally, charity over greed.

29. Primarily because we only have a two party system
I joined the party this year to vote in the primaries. The current version of the Democratic Party in Congress is far more accommodating and centrist than me. but seeing as how we need to work with what we have I became a democrat to shift the party to the left.

If the US ever has run off voting i may need to reconsider in view of the often lame, apologist positions taken by the DLC and DNC, not to mention elected Democrats.

31. Because I am able to think for myself...
...most of the time. :)

My defection from fundamentalist Christianity and George W. Bush himself were instrumental in my becoming a progressive. I'm still registered as a Democrat, hoping the party can rebuild itself.
