Tom DeLay is Going Down
From http://moveleft.com

"Do I think Tom DeLay will be the Majority Leader by the end of this term? No," Rep. Chris Shays (Republican-Connecticut) said Saturday.

All hail whatever new creep the Republicans choose as House Majority Leader.

Rep. Chris Shays has probably felt some animosity towards DeLay at least since Congresss interfered in the Terri Schiavo case. Shays said afterwards in March, "This Republican Party of Lincoln has become a party of theocracy."

Rep. Chris Shays is the co-sponsor of a House bill to fight the corruption of politicians through big campaign contritbutions, Shays-Meehan. It was known in the Senate as McCain Feingold, and became law under the official title, "Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002."

Tom DeLay's corruption is discussed here.

1. Hey Chris, want to really make a statement?
Resign from the Republican Party and join the Democrats. Bring a couple dozen of your moderate/progressive thinking friends on that side of the aisle with you. We can fix things in a hurry, then.

8. What really shows me he is
is how people are going away from him. Not even Bill Frist is talking to him anymore since the Schavio ordeal. And then Cheney told him he was wrong for threatning judges and all that ().

21. When a Republican is too lousy for even Cheney and Frist,
that's lousy.

5. Perhaps Chris wants to save his party
It's entirely possible he's a decent guy and would like to salvage his party from those who've hijacked it over the past 20 years or so. Really - I know it's hard to believe, but I don't want to think all republicans are demons. That kind of black and white thinking is dangerous.

9. Could be
I could see that. I hope he is and some of the others. All that has to happen is the neocons have to leave and never have a chance again.

12. Not defending republicans by any means -
But it's illogical to think all of them are horrible people. On the flipside, not all Democrats are honest and fair.

14. Chris Shays seems like a decent guy, but
no one forced him to him to run with the party which has given as horrors from Nixon to the present.

16. Here's the problem, IMHO.
Edited on Sun Apr-10-05 02:13 PM by Old and In the Way
Chris is a reasonable Republican, probably fair, even. But he is an outliar, marginalized to ineffectiveness within his Party. There aren't nearly enough Cris Shay's in his Party to make a difference. But what he does do is take a blue vote and make it red. I live in Maine and I have two female Republican Senators who do the same. I have a Democratic Congressman that's socially more conservative then they are. In a different time and space, I might respect their work in Congress....today, I view them as ineffectual on stopping the Republican jaugernaut as long as they enable their Party to maintain the majority in Congress. Their positions on issues really don't mean much in that context.

I'm afraid if politicians don't start thinking in terms of what is necessary to check the totalitarian tendencies of the current Republican Party, we may find ourselves locked out of correcting the problem for decades....and maybe then it will be too late to fix what they seem hellbent on destroying.

Generally speaking, I think Shays is a piece of garbage.

But, for the good of this country, I'm now willing to welcome him, and any other nutjob to my party. Our boat is sinking, and we need to solicit help from anybody who happens to have a bucket.

Clarification edit: The "boat" I'm referring to is this country, not the Democratic Party.

2. Time for a sing-a-long, my fellow DUers
Sing along with me, to the tune of "I'm Going Down" by Rose Royce:

"He's going down; Delay's going down

His whole world's upside down

Morales and values don't come easy

Repugs, please believe me

Since he's been on the Hill; everything has gone wrong"

18. Yeah, I know there's that element. But W can't keep --
-- dodging all these bullets forever. Sooner or later the press will begin to smell blood on a lame-ducker and once that happens, I think the coverage is going to start changing. I feel a little of that tug right now.

All year long in 2004, Frank Rich in the NYTimes has just blistered Dubya. Really refreshing writing.
