Blue Collar TV, is it only ok for stupid rednecks...
To call themselves "stupid rednecks"?

I've never had the "pleasure" of watching it before, and I'm not that uptight, but it is one of the un-funniest shows I have ever seen.

Yes, I "get" the jokes, but that doesn't make them funny.

So is it like black Americans being OK with being called the N-word by other black people?

Because it seems like the type of person they are talking to would get pissed if I ever told a joke about them in the same way they joke about themselves.

(Personally, I'll take Arrested Development over just about ANY show.)

2. So do you laugh at Margaret Cho when she makes fun
of Koreans or Andy Rodgriquez when he makes fun of Hispanics? Why are you just upset about a few rednecks having fun laughing at themselves?

3. I guess you have a point
I'm just saying that rednecks tend to have a hard time laughing at themselves when it comes from the other side.

But they seem to love getting called stupid by the guys on BCTV.

And that is what most of the jokes are.
It's all about how stupid, mean, uncaring, and racist they are.

I wouldn't expect a lot of laughs if I said that kind of thing on FreeRepublic.

4. My stepdad was a redneck
He'd say he was and didn't mind the label one bit, but that's just how he was. Not a conserv at all (weird because my mom's one). He was as open-minded as anyone I ever knew, but he considered himself a redneck and laughed at all the jokes since so many of them were about like him.

He used to say 'let's blow 'em all up' just to rile me. LOL He was one of the most surprising men I had ever known.

I know exactly what he'd say about bush. He's say he's a good ole' boy to have a beer with, but he can't run the country for shit.

I miss him :(

I think Blue Collar TV is unfunny dreck. It could just be that I was predisposed to hate it, being an Angel fan (BCTV or some other Foxworthy vehicle was slated for Angel's timeslot when it was cancelled by evil WB). It just wasn't funny to me, at all.

But, FWIW, I saw the various Blue Collar comics' standup when Comedy Central had a marathon recently and thought all of them were riotously funny motherfuckers. "Tater Salad" and Larry the Cable Guy in particular made me laugh harder than any standup comics I've seen in quite a while.

I'm a queer, black female in godless NEW YORK CITY!</salsa ad> and just thought it was really, really funny. Hell, I watched George Lopez' Showtime special a couple of times and even though I'm not a Latina and some of the references admittedly went over my head, I still thought he was funny as hell. I just have a soft spot for people who mercilessly mock their own culture. Probably because I do it all the time. :P

I guess I'm just failing to see your point.

(Agree with you on AD, though. It's way too intelligent for network TV, I'm afraid.)

8. I don't know, but it's the definition of "lowest common denominator".

It's aimed at people who like Adam Sandler. I'm like you- I "get" the jokes, but they're just lame. It's like humor for 6 year olds.

10. I think I'm doing a poor job of explaining my point
Edited on Tue Apr-12-05 01:57 AM by Lefty_the_Right
Yes, some of the jokes are very funny, most of it is really stupid, but you have to laugh at the character to get the real joke, from a progressive point of view.

Like Beavis and Butthead.
You knew the writers were smarter than the characters in the first place to even write the joke in the first place.

But if lefties said what they say about the "red states" non-city livin' folk, all around ignorant POS, as the jokes seemed to be aimed at, I don't think that it would get the raves from the same people who watch it now.

It would be like Chris Rock doing the "who's more racist" bit over and over and over.

I love Chris and it's funny, but it would never be a network show.

9. Johnny Carson said that humor is relative
There will always be someone who doesn't find some brand of humor funny. I thought dumb and dumber was a moran of a movie, but most people I know love it.

11. Yes, because it's done with a wink and an approving nod.
When you tell it straight-up it's insulting.
