To be a republican, first you must be an Asshole.
every damn republican i know, including my own brother, is an asshole.

that is the one unifying trait they all possess. molly ivin's says republicans are 'just plain mean' people. it's so, so true.

they always pick the asshole's side on any issue. they say things only an asshole would say.

help the poor? fuck that, the poor should pull their weight or go to another country. consider diplomacy over military action? fuck that, blow em all to kingdom come. two people in love wanting to get married? fuck that, we decide who can marry or who can't, we're assholes. stay out of your death bed? fuck that, we'll tell you when to die or not, we're assholes.

only assholes would sanction the deaths of over 100,000 innocent Iraqi's without so much as shedding a tear. only assholes would vote for the stupidest man to ever haunt the white house, twice. barbara bush can't trouble her beautiful mind about body bags because she's an asshole.

the president is a big asshole, dick cheney is a bigger asshole, condi, wolfie, rummie are all major assholes, and all of their devotees are assholes.

that guy in the office who loves bush? he's an asshole, and you should tell him so. the republican party is the asshole party.

9. Strongly agree, their core value is selfishness
and they are so pigheaded and dogmatic, they are always right, they are successful because they did everything right. If the poor person or homeless person had been as perfect as they are, they wouldn't be poor or homeless.

They think that if something bad happens to you, it was YOUR fault--no matter how it came about. Also, you should have known the future and not made a choice that had unpleasant consequences. They're very judgmental and critical.

raccoon, this typifies the most digusting element of the attitudes of all of the biggest assholes I know. Four out of five of them voted GUESS HOW in the last election. The fifth is my ex, who used to make comments like this all the time. Me: "Goddamnit, I canNOT believe I was denied a raise, AGAIN." Him: "Well, you must not be working hard enough." My ex votes Democrat because he thinks Republicans are stupid (and, of course, he is the smartest man ever). And he thinks elected Democrats will run a government that will continue to foot the bill for his entire education. And he wants women to maintain their right to choose because even though he looks down on women who have abortions, he wants the right to tell the women he impregnates they're not good enough to have his children so they should just have the "problems" "taken care of." Hypocrisy and evil are not unique to Republicans. But I'm honestly trying to remember the last time I met a voting Republican who wasn't consumed by those things. ::waits two minutes:: Nope, can't do it. Bottom line for me on their assholishness, though--it's one thing to privately endorse misogyny, bigotry and oppression (and obviously that's terrible thing to do however you do it) but it is quite another to vote for members of a party that have made these "values" inherent parts of its platform. Especially if you're one of those jerks who wanders around going, "well, I voted for Bush, but I don't personally hate gays." I always want to scream: "THEN YOU SHOULDN'T HAVE VOTED FOR SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO EXTERMINATE THEM, THEN!!!"

15. I couldn't agree more. They gripe about an extra $2.50 being
taken out of thier check to help fund a program that makes America great like unemployment benefits. I guess they aren't as well off as they think if $2.50 will put them into the poor house. They are such and angry party too. They try to paint us as angry with Dean but say the words Bill Clinton around them and watch the fireworks.

Not every republican is an asshole. That's really being quite rude and ignorant by saying every one of them is. A lot of republicans this last election voted for Kerry. My mother was one of them and now she no longer likes any republican and for the first time in 2006 will vote against our republican Congressman who she used to really like. My dad is a republican and he doesn't know things like I do but I every so often talk politics with him and have gotten him to watch the "Daily show." My grandparents are republicans who this last time voted for Kerry and I know my grandfather doesn't like Bush at all. So please don't be so biased.

The country is being remade in the image of sociopaths. That is what Saddam Hussein and Hilter did. Their lack of feeling (thus self esteem) required that they see manifestations of their greatness all around them - all day long. Thus the quest for power.

Love this post -- you sum it up very nicely. I travel the country on business and meet many, many repugs through that contact. And without exception, they are all assholes. In fact, when someone comes off as a complete asshole I then inquire into their politics and sure enough, turns out they are repugs.

The GIGANTIC ASSHOLE PARTY -- I like that. Very apt description!

It's the natural state of human beings to be selfish and willfully ignorant - in short, assholes. As one writer said, "We're bastards, let's act like bastards." Republicans are just doing what comes naturally.

The point about progressives is that they MAKE AN EFFORT not to be assholes. We all get the urge to take the asshole route in a given situation... right-wingers give in to it, left-wingers fight it.

The knee jerks because someone hit it with a little hammer. It doesn't have the wherewithal to ask who hit it, or why. That's the difference between 'us' and 'them'.

The thing that really pisses me off about the Modern Right-Wing Asshole is the way they've co-opted the language and position of the traditional left... they think they're "protesting" on behalf of the poor, downtrodden white Christian male. But they can't hide the fact that, on a personal level, they're still assholes.

23. Upton Sinclair's The Jungle
I think this book shows exactly what a lot of Republicans are. Jurgis comes to America and scoffs at the poor because he is strong and he figures If you are strong and you work hard, you will get ahead. It's an incredibly naive philosophy. Upton Sinclair flat out calls it "simple" with no thought required. Like the book, it's not until people have experienced for themselves the unfairness of it all that they start comprehend what is happening.

35. The basic premise is lack of empathy and greed.
I believe it requires a complete and total lack of empathy and a lot of selfishness. Those who have a small touch of empathy.. ie when it actually effects someone they know very closely.. they seem to tilt libertarian to me.

Cut through the BS, peel the layers and it always comes down to taxes and how everyone else is a bum who doesn't deserve their money. Even though I've gone round and round with them on how their taxes aren't actually 30% to the federal gov. If you make a low wage you need to work harder.. I had a libertarian buddy once tell taxes needed to be lower on the upper ends in order to help promote 'getting better jobs'.

Of course when he lost his job and his father before him they both couldn't run to the unemployment line fast enough while I watched others like my own father get a second job rather then take the help.

So an overview of what it takes:

1) Lack of empathy
2) Selfishness and greed
3) A firm belief that all programs except the military should be abolished or curtailed unless they need them.
4) They pay too much taxes..
