I predict Bush will NOT invade Iran
I think the Iraq quagmire has made Bush realize the USA cannot win wars in the Middle East without a huge impact on the federal budget. I believe U.S. troops will be withdrawn in significant numbers from Iraq within 2 years, but ONLY because Washington policymakers know we cannot FINANCIALLY afford to keep our troops there (except about 20,000 on the 14 military bases).

Iraq has already cost more in current dollars than either the Civil War or World War I. It is about to pass the Korean War. We are on pace to pass Vietnam in two or three years.

Twenty years of the Vietnam war cost U.S. taxpayers $584 billion in today's dollars. Two years of Iraq has already cost $300 billion. See link….

In today's dollars, World War II cost $2.9 trillion. Economist Warwick McKibbin, a board member of the Australian central bank, said a conflict lasting to 2010 could cost more than $3.5 trillion.

I think Greenspan, Wall Street and the powers-that-be are telling Bush to STOP! America is broke!

28. From my notes from a recent speech by Seymour Hersh
In regards to Iran, Hersh stated that his contacts and research points to four different groups of U.S. Special Forces being in place in Iran. A member of the audience questioned Hersh’s credibility and accused him of harboring an anti-Bush bias. Hersh replied to the written question that the articles he writes are based upon information from his contacts, many of which are very high up in the intelligence community, the Pentagon, and the government and his information usually shows up a few weeks later in the mainstream media as accepted fact. He hasn’t been wrong yet. Hersh only reveals the names of his sources when allowed to do so. Most of his contacts, however, work in intelligence and revealing their names would compromise their safety and their jobs. Hersh did say that some high-ranking Pentagon officials are very critical and upset with the Bush administration but are unable to make public comments to that effect. As far as Hersh’s comments that fighting with Iran is imminent, he was told that if he wrote the piece correctly, there wouldn’t be a fight (meaning, if he uncovered enough information and enough people read it and criticized the Bush administration, an invasion or an attack on Iran would not happen.) Hersh also tossed aside talk of a draft stating the Pentagon doesn’t want to see an influx of people who do not want to fight and, also, getting a draft through Congress would be very difficult right now.

2. Who told you that? Luke Skywalker?
Okay, I'm sure you get that alot...anyway...

I have my doubts too, I just can't see him trying Iran when Iraq has been this difficult. As well, he must have learned mistakes by now.

7. Wall Street and Greenspan will restrain Bush
Money talks. It's ALL THAT MATTERS to people who control our government. The Iraq war is having a serious impact on the federal budget and the economy. It's surprising nobody seems to talk about the financial cost of this war. But financially, we are going to surrender in Iraq within 2 years, imho. And most of America will call it a "success" even though Iraq slips further into chaos.

26. Remember who Bush is
They're high on power and they control everything so if Bush wants to invade Iran he will sooner or later. The question is if he will in June or a little later or sooner. I do think he will eventually. These people have been waiting for YEARS to invade the middle east for their oil. They better do it now and have to before 2006 because of all the elections. Of course that could have nothing to do with it but at least enough time so they can get all the oil by 2008 before the next president comes in.

5. You're giving Smirk way too much credit
He thinks God is going to provide the means (bodies and $$) to conquer the world. He published a list of 25 countries he's going to overthrow, for god's sake. The man does not have a clue how a budget works, or how a war works, for that matter. He thinks drssing up in a jump suit makes him a soldier, and reading off a teleprompter makes him a leader.

Bush has Karl Rove on his side and the republicans know that if they don't go along with this war and the issues that Bush majorly wants they know that Rove will come after them and their political career could be ruined.

19. About the Ritter Story
Edited on Thu Apr-14-05 10:48 PM by ninty
It was taken out of context.

Read about what Ritter said about Iran here:

http://rawstory.com/news/2005/index.php?p=170

"Raw Story’s Larisa Alexandrovna: Scott, first let me thank you for taking the time to speak with me. I want to get right to the meat of things by asking you about a comment you reportedly made in February of this year in your joint appearance with journalist Dahr Jamail in Washington state, where you were quoted as saying that George W. Bush had signed off on plans to bomb Iran in June 2005.

Former UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter: No. Someone else wrote that I had said that.

Raw Story: So it is not correct?

Ritter: It is not wildly incorrect, but it is taken totally out of context. The emphasis is placed on the wrong things. What I said was that the President, in October of 2004, had been briefed by the Pentagon. In preparation to have in place by June 2005 a viable military option. This was in response to instructions by the President that the US must be prepared to implement the next phase of its Iran policy or strategy; the first phase of course being the pursuit of the so called diplomatic option-in other words allowing the European Union to carry out its outreach program."

22. Agree
Iran has not been bombed for 12 years like Iraq in 2003, so an Iranian war would be extremely costly in lives to Americans. Iran would be a huge challenge. The Pentagon knows this. I think the Bush administration is saber rattling, but Iran knows Bush is an empty suit and the Iraq war has financially screwed America more than Americans realize. Our empire is waning.

He wont send in the troops, but he will drop a ton of bombs, wiping Iran out in a few days, the people who put Bush in power, didnt do it, just to get Saddam, and if he does send in troops and America goes broke they willblame Bill and Hillary and the media will be Bush's little puppets and start screaming for Clinton's head.

But I wouldn't be surprised if Bush doesn't drop missiles on Iran. The country is NOT a threat to the USA and Bush knows it. I remember seeing the ambassadors of France, Germany and Britain on CNN. All of them said there is NO NUCLEAR threat from Iran. They are correct!

37. invasion
I think the time has passed when Bush needs to prepare the populace for the necessity of a new war. There will be no public demonstration of the supposed threats that our next victim presents. There will be no need to beg Congress for money, or to prove to the people that we can afford such a venture. For those who think we're in Berlin '34, I think they need to advance it a notch or two - - - say, Berlin '38 or '39.

38. I don't expect an invasion
I don't expect any type of military action within the next few months. Instead you will begin to hear more propaganda about Iran. You will hear Bush saying that we are pursuing all diplomatic options, and bush will emphatically deny any plans to attack.

What I think is brewing on the back burner is a plan to bomb if/when Iran doesn't cower in fear the US's (bush's) great power. So far I haven't seen Iran doing alot of cowering.

My understanding is that we are currently in the process of sending more troops to the Iran/Afghanistan border. I've heard this from soldiers stationed in Germany and Afghanistan. The official story is that they are to be burning poppies. I have a sinking feeling it has more to do with preparing for the escalating tensions with Iran.

I think bush is a power junkie. He has little to no regard for the damage he's doing in this country or others. I don't think it's because he's planning for the end times, but rather he simply wants his way, no matter what the cost. He is the perfect tool for the PNAC and they know it. I can't see them letting him leave office without using him to the fullest.
