Bush is speaking at my local community college now about SS "reform!"
He's about 15 miles away from me at a roundtable discussion about Social Security "reform", at the community college where I got my paralegal certificate and where I've taken many other credit and non-credit classes over the years. It's strange to think he's that close!!!!

And don't you just love it, instead of it being a town hall discussion like he and his oh-so-in-touch party claim, it's a small roundtable discussion that is "invitation only." Surprise, surprise! It would have been interesting to see what would have happened had it actually been a town hall meeting, because most people around here, including conservatives, are extremely wary of Bush's "plan" and that of his party in general. And this is a pretty conservative county. I think the GOP stopped the town hall meeting format largely because they were absolutely shocked at the poor reception they were getting. And anyway, they just can't have any discussions with the "little people" about a critical subject that will have tremendous impact on them, far more so than on Bush and his "have and have-more" (as he so eloquently put it himself) cronies. That would be asking far too much of them, I suppose.

1. I wonder also
If they think this is one issue they might be able to get college kids on? I mean I'm sure they do, but I wonder if they've made that a bigger part of their strategy lately

3. I'm sure they do think that,
but that'll also likely backfire on them because they're not making nearly as much headway with the kids as they'd like. They had more support from younger people at first, but then the kids started recognizing just how much his so-called "plan" would really cost and what it would do to the country. In other words, they recognize that his "solution" is far worse than the "problem" (which isn't nearly as severe as the pubs want people to think it is, something people are catching onto quickly).

7. Soon they'll be paying people to show up
just like they pay their propagandists.

4. Is there a local protest or rally going on?
There should be one every place the shrubbery goes.

6. bush said yesterday that he needs to convice people their is a problem
-at the newspaper conference. i listened to most of it. Maureen dowd was in the audiance. His responses were a rehash of his pony road show. He was talking "dumb down' talk-like intelligent people would not be able to follow a conversation.

11. Yes, Kirtland is about
20 miles east of Cleveland, in Lake County, my county. As far as I know, though, there weren't any protests or demonstrations planned; at least not that I've heard about. We didn't even know about this visit until last weekend, so that might not have been enough time to get something together.

5. It's a damn shame that * is so self centered
that he goes along with the recommendation of the "invitation only" discussions. "It's good for my job ratings" is a thing of the past and he's too stupid to realize that. The purpose of a good discussion is to have pros AND cons, a debate that produces sensible and feasable results, not partisan ones.

12. But that's the whole point, Bush does NOT WANT
any kind of debate or true discussion. He wants to just be surrounded by "yes" people all of the time and doesn't want to hear anything that disagrees with him in the slightest. He's very thin-skinned, just like his whole damn useless family. It's too bad my grandfather is no longer alive, he'd really have given Bush an earful and then some.

10. "Invitation only..." ????
I don't get it-- if anyone in the White House actually thinks this thing could fly, why not talk to the people NOT in the choir?

Sounds like they're trying to get a core group of influence peddlars on board and hoping for the best.

13. that's exactly what they want
to do, make no mistake about it. And the majority of people have caught on to that, even Bush supporters, including my paternal aunt's rabidly RW husband.

I still can't believe I'm only about ten miles or so from Bush right now!

14. Send of a short letter to the editor of your local paper
Mention Bush's visit, and note with regret that it was "invitation only," and that you would really have liked a chance to tell the president something he apparently hasn't already heard about social security and its "crisis" (pick one of any of a dozen talking points that show Chimpy's out of touch on this issue).

Close by wondering just what the president is trying to accomplish by speaking only to those who agree with him, and how as the president of ALL the people, wouldn't he be better served by opening up his little "town hall" meetings to everyone.

15. Good idea! The problem
is that the local paper in this county is so unbelievably RW, and so biased, that I doubt it would be printed. I'll give it a shot, though.

16. They might not print it, but someone will read it
And if you couch the issue in terms of "bipartisanship" and trying to reach a consensus of all the citizenry, it's just possible that someone will say, "You know, this letter from this whacko hippie liberal makes a valid point," and they might just run it.

Youneverknow.

18. Suggestion: write a first hand account to Charlie Rangel
Edited on Fri Apr-15-05 05:09 PM by paineinthearse
He recently charged Bush with fraud for conducting these partisan meetings on the taxpayers' dime.
