Oil ministry an untouched building in ravaged Baghdad

Since US forces rolled into central Baghdad a week ago, one of the sole public buildings untouched by looters has been Iraq's massive oil ministry, which is under round-the-clock surveillance by troops.

The imposing building in the Al-Mustarisiya quarter is guarded by around 50 US tanks which block every entrance, while sharpshooters are positioned on the roof and in the windows.

2. What a surprise.
I suppose they still believe the "oil thing" will save this fiasco somehow, someway, someday.

Off topic, but that soldier to the far left looks like a mannequin displaying the latest in U.S. soldier attire. It's kind of weird.

3. Why is the English first on an Iraqi sign?. . .
And why is there English at all on an Iraqi sign? Given the far closer relations France and Russia had with Hussein in the last decade, why isn't the sign in French or Russian?

6. a short Answer
many Iraqi's speak English because Iraq is a former British Colony
I wonder if they will permit Iraq to Join the Commonwealth now?

8. I think I found another reason. . .
I checked and found that -- as I thought I remembered -- Arabic is read from right to left, which explains why the sign would be constructed the way it is: both languages are read correctly as the first words on the sign.

I knew Iraq's history but I suspect even more than that, English is the language of commerce -- it and Spanish, so it makes sense that despite everything between Iraq and the English-speaking world, they'd keep the English language signs even with Russia and France as their primary customers.

7. Hey, what do you think you're doing?
Move along, nothing to see here. Everything's fine, we're being greeted as liberators, and freedom is on the march. What are you, French?
